Nick Reiner Case: Charges, Brentwood Killings, and Trust Fund Fight

The Nick Reiner case is a Los Angeles County first-degree murder prosecution in which Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, is charged with fatally stabbing both parents inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. He pleaded not guilty at his February 23, 2026 arraignment, is held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, and faces a pretrial hearing set for September 15, 2026 that will schedule the preliminary hearing determining whether he stands trial.¹²

The Charges He Faces

On December 16, 2025, two days after the killings, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed two counts of first-degree murder against Nick Reiner. Prosecutors added a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders and an allegation that a knife was personally used in the killings. That special circumstance makes him eligible for either the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.³

District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet decided whether to pursue capital punishment. He has said the “desires of the Reiner family” will factor into that decision, and as of mid-2026 the office has not announced its choice. California has not executed anyone since 2006, though the death penalty remains on the books.⁴⁵

Hochman assigned the case to Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian and Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung of the Major Crimes Division.⁴

What Happened in Brentwood

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were killed in the early morning of December 14, 2025 inside their home on South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. The Los Angeles County medical examiner ruled the cause of death for both as “multiple sharp force injuries.” Hochman later confirmed a knife was used.⁶⁷

The bodies were discovered that Sunday afternoon after a massage therapist with a scheduled appointment could not get through the gate. The couple’s daughter, Romy Reiner, went to the house, entered, and found her father’s body. LAPD officers from the West Los Angeles Division responded around 3:40 p.m., and the Robbery Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section took over once the deaths were confirmed as homicides.⁴⁸

Nick Reiner was not at the home when officers arrived. Investigators identified him as the suspect through their initial scene work, and around 9:15 p.m. that same evening, LAPD’s Gang and Narcotics Division and a U.S. Marshals task force arrested him near the Expo/Vermont Metro Station in South Los Angeles, about 15 miles from the crime scene. There were no signs of forced entry, and reporting indicated Nick had been living on his parents’ property.⁹⁸⁷

Authorities have said almost nothing publicly about motive. PBS NewsHour reported that “leaks in the case have been virtually nonexistent on both sides.”¹⁰

His Mental Health and Addiction History

Nick Reiner’s psychiatric and addiction history is likely to shape the defense and has already surfaced in court through a sealed medical order.¹¹

He has been diagnosed at different times with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.¹²¹³¹⁴

Nick has also been publicly candid for years about addiction. He said he began using drugs at 15 and had gone through more than 18 rehab stays, using “all kinds of drugs” including methamphetamine and heroin, with many relapses and periods of homelessness.¹⁵¹⁶ He co-wrote the 2016 semiautobiographical film Being Charlie, which his father directed and which drew from his own time in treatment. On the Dopey podcast, he later described being “spun out on uppers” and destroying his parents’ guest house.¹⁷

In the months before the killings, he was under the care of a psychiatrist and was being treated at a Los Angeles rehabilitation facility. About a month before the deaths of his parents, he switched medications because of side effects. Sources familiar with his care told The New York Times that the change made him “more erratic and dangerous,” and that doctors were still working to adjust his treatment when the killings occurred.¹²¹⁸

The Defense Situation

Nick Reiner was initially represented by prominent Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Alan Jackson, who publicly maintained his client’s innocence. “What we’ve learned, and you can take this to the bank, is that pursuant to the laws of this state, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder,” Jackson told reporters.¹⁹

On January 7, 2026, Jackson withdrew, citing “circumstances beyond our control, and more importantly, circumstances beyond Nick’s control,” and declining to elaborate on ethical grounds.²⁰ The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office took over, with Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene as lead counsel under the oversight of Public Defender Ricardo Garcia. Greene entered the not guilty plea at the February 2026 arraignment.¹⁹

As of mid-2026, the defense has not disclosed a strategy. Legal analysts have speculated that Reiner’s mental health history could support either an insanity defense or a claim that he is incompetent to stand trial, but neither has been formally raised.²¹

The Trust Fund Fight

In June 2026, Nick Reiner’s defense team asked Los Angeles probate court to release funds from the “Nick Reiner Children’s Trust,” a trust his parents set up in 1993. It holds more than $1.5 million, and he is its sole beneficiary. Under its terms, half was to go to him at 30 and the remainder at 35, with additional discretionary payments for health, education, and living expenses.²²²³

The former trustee, Paul Kanin, refused to release the money, citing “unresolved concerns” about Reiner’s “capacity to make sound decisions.” A new trustee, Jodi Montgomery, was appointed and retained a consultant to review the trust. The defense argues the funds are Reiner’s personal assets rather than part of his parents’ estate, and that the mandatory distribution date has already passed. If the funds are released, Reiner reportedly intends to use them to rehire Alan Jackson.²⁴²²

The petition acknowledged that under California’s “slayer statute,” Reiner would be barred from inheriting from his parents’ estate if convicted, but argued he is entitled to a presumption of innocence for trust disbursements in the meantime. This trust is separate from the larger Reiner Family Trusts, which remain frozen until the criminal case is resolved. A hearing on the petition is set for August 17, 2026.²⁴²²

Where the Case Stands Now

At an April 29, 2026 hearing, prosecutors disclosed that they had yet to turn over nearly two terabytes of discovery to the defense. Autopsy reports for both victims also remained incomplete, held under a court-ordered security hold requested by the LAPD. The court continued the matter to September 15, 2026, when it is expected to set a date for the preliminary hearing that will decide whether Nick Reiner stands trial.²⁵²⁶

He remains at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles, held in its high-observation mental health unit. He is kept alone in a roughly 7-by-10-foot cell, eats three meals a day in confinement, and is checked every 15 minutes. He was placed on suicide watch initially, then removed from that status as of January 8, 2026, and receives weekly evaluations from on-staff psychiatrists.²⁷

His siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, released a joint statement on December 17, 2025, calling the loss of their parents devastating and asking that “speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity.” They did not directly address the charges against their brother.²⁸²⁹
