Nicole Kidman Divorce Settlement: Prenup, Custody, Real Estate

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s divorce settlement was finalized on January 6, 2026 in Davidson County Circuit Court in Nashville, ending a 19-year marriage on terms shaped by a prenuptial agreement the couple signed before their 2006 wedding. Both parties waived spousal and child support, divided their assets by mutual agreement, and agreed to a parenting plan giving Kidman primary residential custody of their two daughters.¹

What the Settlement Says

The financial core of the agreement is short. Neither party pays the other anything. Both permanently waived any claim to alimony.¹ Neither parent pays child support to the other.² Each pays their own legal fees. Court filings noted that both reported monthly incomes “in excess of $100,000.”³

All property, defined to include investments, bank accounts, furniture, appliances, vehicles, and personal items, was divided “to the mutual satisfaction of both parties,” with each spouse keeping whatever was already in their control.⁴ There was no equalization payment and no listed exchange of specific items between them.

How the Prenup Shaped the Outcome

Kidman and Urban signed a detailed prenuptial agreement before their June 2006 wedding, and it governed the division of individual and shared assets.⁵ One widely reported provision, sourced to a summary published by the American Bar Association, entitled Urban to $600,000 for every year of marriage, contingent on his keeping his struggles with drug and alcohol abuse under control.⁶ Neither Kidman nor Urban has ever publicly confirmed or denied those specific terms.³

Whatever the exact wording, the prenup’s framework carried through to the final decree. The couple’s assets were split so each party kept what was already theirs, with no support running in either direction. The combined estate was substantial. Estimates of the couple’s total net worth ranged from roughly $280 million to over $400 million, depending on how business interests and intellectual property were valued.⁴

The mutual support waiver also made sense in light of each spouse’s independent earning power. Kidman was named the highest-paid actress of 2024 by Forbes, with reported earnings of $41 million that year, and her individual net worth has been estimated at $250 million.⁷⁸ Urban’s net worth was estimated at $75 million as of 2025, built on touring, songwriting, and television work.⁹

Custody of Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret

The Permanent Parenting Plan designated Kidman the primary residential parent for the couple’s two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. The children spend 306 days per year with Kidman and 59 days with Urban. Urban’s parenting time runs every other weekend, from Saturday at 10 a.m. to Sunday at 6 p.m.²

Despite the uneven time split, both parents kept joint decision-making authority over major life decisions affecting the children.⁵ The plan included co-parenting language requiring both to maintain a “loving, stable, consistent and nurturing relationship” with the children, refrain from speaking badly of each other, and encourage the children to “continue to love the other parent and be comfortable in both families.”¹⁰ A Tennessee court order also required both parents to complete a mandatory four-hour parenting education seminar, a standard requirement under state law in any divorce involving minor children.¹¹

How the Real Estate Actually Split

One detail from Kidman’s financial disclosures explains why property division never became contested: the couple held no joint real estate ventures. All properties sat inside trusts, limited liability companies, or other entities, and the settlement awarded them “in accordance with the terms of such trusts… free and clear of any and all interest and claims by the other party.”⁷ Division was a matter of confirming existing ownership rather than negotiating who got what.

The portfolio covered by that structure was large. It included a seven-bedroom estate in the gated Northumberland community in Nashville, purchased in 2008 for roughly $3.47 million and reportedly where Kidman continued living with the daughters after the separation; a Beverly Hills home bought in 2008 for $4.7 million; a West Chelsea duplex in New York purchased in 2010 for roughly $10 million and a Tribeca penthouse bought in 2020 for $3.5 million; “Bunya Hill,” a 110-acre Georgian-style estate in Sutton Forest, Australia, purchased in 2008 for an estimated $4 million to $6.5 million; multiple apartments in Sydney’s Latitude complex acquired starting in 2009 for a combined outlay of roughly $27.5 million; and a home in Lisbon, with reports that the couple also spent over $4.7 million on a not-yet-completed property at the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club in Portugal.¹²¹³¹⁴¹⁵¹⁶ Urban reportedly purchased a new Nashville property after the split.

Why the Case Moved So Quickly

Kidman filed on September 30, 2025, in the Circuit Court for Davidson County, Tennessee, citing irreconcilable differences.¹⁷ The decree was entered just over three months later. The speed came from preparation: Urban signed the parenting plan and dissolution documents on August 29, 2025, and Kidman signed on September 6, before the filing was made public.¹⁸ Both parties waived formal discovery, including interrogatories and depositions, and Kidman waived her right to appear in court in person.⁴ There were no contested hearings and no discovery disputes.

Tennessee Law on Property and Prenups

Tennessee is an equitable distribution state. Courts divide marital property in “just proportions” rather than presuming an equal 50/50 split. The governing statute, Tennessee Code § 36-4-121, directs judges to weigh factors including the length of the marriage, each spouse’s earning capacity, contributions to the marriage, and the economic circumstances of each party. The statute also explicitly preserves the validity of prenuptial agreements.¹⁹

None of those judicial factors had to be litigated in this case. Because Kidman and Urban reached a full agreement before filing, the court’s role was to approve the deal rather than impose one.

What Each Side Has Said Since

In a Variety cover story published March 11, 2026, Kidman addressed the divorce publicly for the first time, calling the process “rough.” She declined to go into specifics, saying, “Everything else I don’t discuss out of respect. I’m staying in a place of, ‘We are a family,’ and that’s what we’ll continue to be.”²⁰

Urban had not made public statements about the divorce as of mid-2026. At a March 2026 performance at London’s O2 Arena, he told the audience, “We’re here to friggin’ forget about our lives outside of this arena.”²¹ No appeals, amended filings, or new legal disputes between them have been reported.²⁰
