What Happened to Nikki McCain
Nikki McCain, a 39-year-old mother of four, was last seen on May 18, 2024, at the Olinda Road home she shared with Tyler in Anderson, just south of Redding. Her phone last connected to the network around 3 a.m. that morning. Her sister Kaye Ford reported her missing four days later, on May 22.3KCRA. On May 25, 2024, Shasta County sheriff’s deputies found Nikki’s Chevrolet Avalanche abandoned off Highway 36 near the Beegum Gorge Bridge, close to the Shasta-Tehama county line. Investigators reported an overwhelming odor of decomposition from the truck’s enclosed bed. Inside they found a blood-stained white sheet, dried blood on the bed itself, and strands of dark hair. DNA testing confirmed the blood was Nikki’s. Additional testing identified Tyler as the primary source of DNA on non-blood items recovered from the vehicle.4CBS News. The Domestic Violence Case Prosecutors Say Was the Motive
The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office has described a history of domestic violence between Nikki and Tyler dating to 2020. Their four children were removed from the couple’s care in 2022, and forensic interviews later disclosed that the children had witnessed their father hurt their mother. In December 2023, Tyler was charged with four felonies: corporal injury to a spouse, assault, false imprisonment, and criminal threats. The charges arose from Nikki’s allegation that he had bound her, placed a towel over her face and poured water on it, strangled her, and held her captive for hours. The Charges Against Tyler McCain

Evidence Presented So Far
An eight-day preliminary hearing took place in September 2025 before visiting Superior Court Judge Thomas L. Bender. Ring camera footage recorded in 2022 at the home of Nikki’s sister Chloe Saelee captured Tyler pounding on the door and yelling, “If you don’t open this door I swear to God I’ll kill you,” along with a threat to “kill everyone in this house.”12KRCR. Investigators also recovered Tyler’s wallet during an April 2025 traffic stop on Highway 299. Inside was Nikki’s California driver’s license, partially burned. Two witnesses complicated the prosecution’s showing. Luis Barajas, who testified he had been in a romantic relationship with Nikki, said he was the last person other than Tyler to see her alive, on the evening of May 17, 2024, and that their communication cut off abruptly in the early hours of May 18. He described an earlier episode, which he placed around August 2023, in which Nikki arrived at his home severely beaten and told him Tyler had put a towel over her face and poured water on it, struck her with an object, strangled her, and held her for hours. A later report indicated Barajas reversed portions of his account, saying he had fabricated aspects of it.14KRCR. Albert Nelson, a former friend of Tyler, had told detectives that Tyler confessed to killing Nikki on May 18, 2024, saying the two had struggled in bed while both were using methamphetamine, that he fell asleep, and that he woke up to find her dead. Nelson also claimed his sister had seen Tyler maneuvering a pickup truck suspiciously near the property that day. On the stand, Nelson recanted all of it. He testified that he had fabricated the stories to win favorable treatment while in jail, that he had been high on methamphetamine when he made the original statements, and he appeared in shackles because of an active felony warrant out of Kern County.16KRCR. Where the Case Stands Now
Tyler McCain is represented by defense attorney Michael Borges. The case has been assigned to Judge Adam Ryan in Shasta County Superior Court. Prosecutors have subpoenaed more than 100 witnesses and expect six to eight weeks of testimony. Trial was first set for November 2025, then postponed to give the defense time to review the volume of evidence, and delayed again over a scheduling conflict for Borges.
