Catuogno, calling from his own home in Palm Harbor, heard Halpin scream. Why Investigators Suspected Daniel Welch
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office focused on Welch, then 38, early on. He and Halpin had dated about two years, and she ended the relationship after he proposed roughly three months before the killing. According to reports, Welch became obsessed after the breakup, showing up at her home and banging on the doors and windows. Halpin had been considering a restraining order.2Lowell Sun. Welch’s alibi fell apart. He told detectives he had been exercising with a neighbor that evening, but the neighbor said Welch cut the session short around 9 p.m., claiming he felt unwell.4Oxygen. The 911 Recording That Broke the Case
The turn came inside the sheriff’s office. An administrative assistant transcribing the 911 call picked out a male voice in the background saying, “Nicole, calm down.” Family members told detectives that Welch was the only person who ever called her Nicole rather than Nikki. Investigators also learned that, while under suspicion, Welch had told his girlfriend details never released to the public: that he was the prime suspect, that nothing had been stolen from the home, and that Halpin had been struck in the head. The Guilty Plea and 25-Year Sentence
Welch never went to trial. Halpin’s parents, Laurie and Nelson Gomm, worried about what testifying would do to their grandsons, who had been in the house that night and would likely be called as witnesses. Where Welch Is Now
At the time of the murder plea, Welch was already serving a 42-month sentence on concurrent convictions for trafficking in Oxycodone and conspiracy to traffic in Oxycodone; Florida’s Second District Court of Appeal affirmed that conviction on November 3, 2006.5FindLaw.
