The 2014 Murder Case in Nigeria
Ukpanah’s name appears in earlier coverage from Nigeria for a very different reason. On March 12, 2014, his father, Engineer Albert Jimmy Ukpanah, was assassinated at his home in Abak, Akwa Ibom State. The elder Ukpanah was a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party and a vocal opponent of then-Governor Godswill Akpabio’s senatorial ambitions. A police investigation report dated March 25, 2014, signed by Sgt. Ibediro Nnamdi, concluded that the killing appeared to be “politically motivated.”9Sahara Reporters. Despite that finding, the Akwa Ibom State government charged Odudu, then 31, with his father’s murder, alleging he had killed the elder Ukpanah to steal two million naira. He spent roughly a year in detention before being granted bail, and his health reportedly declined during that time.10The Nigerian Voice.
