No official paraquat lawsuit settlement amounts have been disclosed, and no plaintiffs have received checks. A settlement framework signed in April 2025 between Syngenta and lead plaintiffs’ counsel is intended to resolve the federal multidistrict litigation, but its terms remain confidential and the process has stalled. The projections circulating publicly come from plaintiffs’ attorneys and legal analysts, not from the court or the parties, and they describe a tiered structure that could run from roughly $20,000 for weaker claims to more than $1,000,000 for the strongest cases.1Lawsuit Information Center. Projected Settlement Tiers
Because the global deal is confidential, no per-plaintiff figures have been officially released. The most commonly cited projection from legal analysts uses three tiers based on illness severity, evidence, and exposure history:
- Tier I, the strongest cases: $400,000 to $1,000,000 or more
- Tier II, moderate cases: $150,000 to $300,000
- Tier III, weaker or less-documented cases: $20,000 to $150,000
Under that framework, the average payout has been estimated at somewhere between $600,000 and $900,000, though analysts warn a large volume of weaker MDL cases could pull the average down.1Lawsuit Information Center. These are projections, not commitments. The actual numbers depend on the final terms of the deal, how many claimants participate, and whether the settlement survives its current problems.
How Individual Payouts Are Calculated
This is a mass tort, not a class action. Each plaintiff maintains an individual lawsuit and each claim is evaluated on its own facts, so there is no single pot divided equally.3Wallace Miller. Paraquat Exposure
Individual amounts are expected to be determined through a points-based system weighing several factors: the severity and progression of the plaintiff’s Parkinson’s disease, the quality of medical documentation, and the length and intensity of paraquat exposure. Plaintiffs are primarily agricultural workers, farmers, and licensed applicators who mixed, loaded, or sprayed the herbicide over years or decades.
Federal MDL vs. State Court Cases
Where a case was filed matters. Cases filed in state court, particularly in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, are generally expected to command higher payouts than cases in the federal MDL.1Lawsuit Information Center. Paraquat Lawsuit Settlement Amount The federal cases were weakened in April 2024 when Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel excluded plaintiffs’ sole general causation expert and granted summary judgment to defendants in four bellwether cases.4U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. More than 1,100 cases were active in Philadelphia as of August 2025, with additional litigation in Delaware and other state courts.5Miller and Zois. Earlier Settlements as Reference Points
The current global framework is not the first paraquat payout. In 2021, Syngenta and a co-defendant reached a $187.5 million settlement with multiple plaintiffs in Illinois state court. The exact number of plaintiffs and the per-person breakdown were not publicly disclosed, though some reporting has referenced 16 plaintiffs.7ConsumerNotice.org. Since then, Syngenta has resolved every case that reached a trial date before trial actually began.9The New Lede. Those terms were not disclosed.10Motley Rice. Paraquat Lawsuit The pattern of last-minute settlements suggests the company is willing to pay to avoid a jury verdict, which is one reason plaintiffs’ analysts view state-court cases as more valuable.
When Money Might Actually Arrive
Timing is the harder question. On April 14, 2025, Syngenta and lead plaintiffs’ counsel filed a joint notice that they had signed a Letter Agreement intended to resolve the litigation, with terms projected to be completed within 30 days.11The New Lede. Procedural pieces have moved. A lien resolution administrator was appointed in February 2026, and the court approved a Qualified Settlement Fund in March 2026 to handle disbursement.13ConsumerNotice.org. Paraquat Lawsuits The total dollar amount in that fund has not been disclosed, and the QSF’s creation does not mean checks are being issued.
Once the global deal is actually finalized, analysts estimate it will take several months to more than a year before individual claimants see any money, because the points-based evaluation must be done claim by claim.1Lawsuit Information Center. Paraquat Lawsuit Settlement Amount
Why the Deal Isn’t Done Yet
By spring 2026, the settlement had run into a real problem. Plaintiffs were opting out at an unusually high rate. In April 2026, Judge Rosenstengel ordered settlement administrators to give the court’s Special Master detailed data on non-qualifying claimants, opt-outs, and undecided plaintiffs.7ConsumerNotice.org. Paraquat Lawsuits Settlement In June 2026, she ordered three law firms to conduct discovery, including depositions, after finding the proposed settlement had drawn “exceedingly high opt-out rates” and that many of their clients were not participating.14Law.com. Judge Orders Depositions After Paraquat Settlement Draws Exceedingly High Opt-Out Rates
A high opt-out rate typically signals that plaintiffs or their lawyers view the projected amounts as too low relative to the strength of their cases, especially when state-court trials are on the horizon. Pennsylvania state court trials are scheduled at a pace of one per month from August 2026 through July 2027, and the first jury verdict in a paraquat-Parkinson’s case could reshape everyone’s calculations.3Wallace Miller. What Plaintiffs Should Do Now
No checks have gone out, no final numbers have been published, and the projections above are estimates from lawyers and analysts, not the court or the parties. Whether a specific offer is worth accepting, and whether opting out makes sense given the case’s strength and jurisdiction, is a decision to make with an attorney based on the actual offer received and the documentation available, not on ranges circulating online. Syngenta continues to deny that paraquat causes Parkinson’s disease and has not conceded liability as part of any settlement.15The New Lede. Syngenta Moving to Settle Thousands of Lawsuits
