The Parker’s Kitchen lawsuit ended in a $15 million wrongful death settlement paid to the family of Mallory Beach, the 19-year-old killed in a February 2019 boat crash after Paul Murdaugh bought alcohol at a Parker’s Kitchen store in Ridgeland, South Carolina, using his brother’s ID. The convenience store chain did not admit fault, but South Carolina’s joint and several liability rule left it exposed to the full weight of any verdict against the Murdaugh defendants. The case also produced a separate harassment lawsuit against founder Greg Parker, a related breach-of-contract dispute involving the company’s law firm, and a 2025 state law that rewrote the liability rule at the center of the payout.
Why Parker’s Was Sued
On the evening of February 23, 2019, Paul Murdaugh, then 19, bought alcohol at a Parker’s Kitchen in Ridgeland using his older brother Buster’s driver’s license and his mother’s credit card.1Island Packet. The Beach family filed a wrongful death suit in Hampton County in 2019, naming Parker’s Corporation, Greg Parker, clerk Tajeeha Cohen, Alex Murdaugh, and members of the Murdaugh family as defendants.3ABC News 4. Parker’s defense, led by attorney P.K. Shere, said the sale was legal. The company cited a South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division investigation that found Cohen had committed no crime and had scanned a driver’s license that came back valid.3ABC News 4. Why the Store Faced a $15 Million Verdict Risk
The rule that put Parker’s on the hook was South Carolina’s joint and several liability doctrine. Under that law, any defendant found even partially at fault in a wrongful death case involving alcohol could be held responsible for the entire verdict.5The State. Alex Murdaugh’s assets had been depleted by the financial crimes for which he was later prosecuted, so Parker’s realistically faced the full verdict alone. The $15 Million Settlement
Weeks before trial, on June 16, 2023, the parties reached what Tinsley called a “global resolution.” The total payout was $18.5 million: $18 million from Parker’s insurance carriers and $500,000 from a boat insurance policy Alex Murdaugh held through Progressive.10ABC News 4. Separately, the Beach family and three surviving passengers had settled with the estate of Maggie Murdaugh and with Buster Murdaugh in January 2023 for roughly $517,892 plus a 2021 Mercedes SUV appraised at $85,000, with proceeds from the SUV donated to a charity established in Mallory Beach’s honor.11ABC News 4. The Harassment Lawsuit Against Greg Parker
While the wrongful death case was still active, the Beach family opened a second front. In December 2021, Tinsley filed suit accusing Greg Parker, Parker’s Corporation, and several associates of running a harassment campaign meant to break the family’s resolve.14ABC News 4. The Beach family alleged that Parker’s team hired social media “knife fighters” to create fake posts targeting the family and that confidential mediation materials, including previously unreleased photographs of Mallory Beach’s body, were provided to Ward for a documentary titled “The Murdaugh Murders.” A trailer posted online in November 2021 contained pieces of the confidential mediation video and the photos.17Greenville Online. As of June 2026, the remaining defendants (Greg Parker, Parker’s Corporation, Greco, and D’Cruz) had filed for summary judgment, with the attorneys separately invoking attorney immunity.16WSAV. The BakerHostetler Breach-of-Contract Case
The harassment allegations generated a spinoff lawsuit of their own. In May 2024, Inquiry Agency LLC, a Charleston-based private detective firm, filed a breach-of-contract claim against BakerHostetler and partner Jason D’Cruz in Charleston County (Case No. 2024CP1002640).20Bloomberg Law. When Tinsley subpoenaed the agency’s investigative files, the agency says BakerHostetler instructed it to refuse the subpoena “under any circumstances,” running up legal fees the agency claims the firm then refused to reimburse under a “hold harmless” clause in their contract.22Walterboro Live. The South Carolina Law That Changed the Rules
The Beach case helped drive a broader push to overhaul South Carolina’s tort and liquor liability laws. In May 2025, Governor Henry McMaster signed Act 42 (H.3430), effective January 1, 2026.24South Carolina Legislature. Act No. 42, H.3430
The law replaced the old rule with a proportional fault model. A defendant found less than 50% at fault is now responsible only for its share of damages, not the entire verdict. In cases involving both a licensed alcohol seller and a driver charged with DUI, the licensee can be held jointly liable for up to 50% of actual damages if both are found at fault.24South Carolina Legislature. Act No. 42, H.3430 The act also mandates alcohol server training, requires businesses selling alcohol for on-premises consumption to carry liquor liability insurance, and lets businesses reduce coverage requirements by adopting measures such as stopping alcohol service by midnight or using forensic digital ID scanners. Had the law been in place in 2019, Parker’s would have faced a very different exposure calculation in the Beach litigation.
