Pilar Sanders Divorce Settlement: Prenup, Support, and Custody

Pilar Sanders walked away from her divorce from NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders with roughly $1 million, no spousal support, and joint custody of only one of the couple’s three children. A Texas court upheld the prenuptial agreement she had signed two days before the 1999 wedding, and that document controlled the financial outcome of the Pilar Sanders divorce settlement.¹

The Prenup That Capped the Payout

Deion and Pilar signed the prenuptial agreement on April 19, 1999. It gave Pilar a $100,000 signing bonus at the time and promised her $100,000 for each year of marriage in the event of divorce, capped at $1 million.²¹ The couple married later that same year and stayed married until Deion filed for divorce in December 2011, putting Pilar at or near the agreement’s ceiling.

She fought the prenup hard. Her attorneys argued that portions had been forged, that pages and exhibits were missing when she signed, and that she had been pressured and “tricked and defrauded” into the agreement.³¹ On October 24, 2012, Collin County State District Judge Ray Wheless ruled the agreement valid and enforceable, found that Pilar had signed voluntarily, and barred her from raising the claim again. An arbitrator confirmed the signatures in March 2013, closing off the property-division fight along the lines the prenup set.

Support, Fees, and Property

Reporting at the time described the outcome as allowing Deion to end the marriage “without providing Pilar with any of his money, beyond a reported $1 million payment upon finalization of the divorce and ongoing child support.”⁴

Pilar had asked for $14,000 per month in spousal support. The court denied it.⁵ What she did get, on top of the prenup payout:

$10,500 per month in child support for the three children
$3,500 per month toward her housing costs
$275,000 toward her legal fees
A separate $108,000 for attorney fees tied to the children’s legal representation

Those figures came out of a May 2012 order.⁵⁶

The couple’s Prosper, Texas, mansion on Preston Road, valued at roughly $5.7 million, went to Deion.⁷ Pilar was ordered to return six containers of his property by July 1, 2012.⁵

Custody of the Three Children

The financial terms were only half the settlement. The other half was custody of Shilo, Shedeur, and Shelomi.

After an April 2012 domestic altercation at the family home, Judge Wheless granted Deion temporary custody. The judge concluded that injuries Pilar attributed to Deion had in fact resulted from him defending himself against her assault, and the court ordered counseling for the children.⁸

The full custody trial ran in Collin County in March 2013. On March 12, a jury voted 11-1 to give Deion sole conservatorship of the two sons, Shilo and Shedeur, meaning he alone would decide where they lived, where they went to school, and what activities they pursued. The parents received joint conservatorship of daughter Shelomi. Deion’s attorney Rick Robertson said jurors did not believe the abuse allegations Pilar had raised and were “offended by cheap shots and grandstanding.”⁹

Pilar appealed. In April 2016 a Dallas appellate court granted her permission to proceed without prepaying court costs after accepting her affidavit of indigence.¹⁰ The available records do not show a final ruling on the merits of the custody appeal.

The $3 Million Defamation Judgment That Was Reversed

What Pilar owed also became part of the story. Deion sued her for defamation over statements on social media, in online videos, and on a national television news program accusing him of physically abusing her and the children, attempting to murder her, and kidnapping one of the children.¹¹

A trial court granted him summary judgment and $3 million in damages:

$2 million for lost endorsement contracts with Van Heusen and GMC
$500,000 for the cancellation of a reality television program
$200,000 for reduced NFL Network payments
$200,000 for general reputational injury
$74,500 for investigation and defense costs

On November 19, 2021, the Texas Court of Appeals, Fifth District, reversed and threw out the entire $3 million award. The appellate court held that Deion had not proven his specific financial losses were caused by Pilar’s statements rather than by other factors; evidence that contracts had been canceled did not by itself show they were canceled because of her accusations.¹¹

Netted out, the settlement Pilar received was the prenup’s $1 million ceiling, monthly child support and housing money, and legal fee reimbursements. What she gave up, either by court order or by the prenup she could not break, was any claim to spousal support, the Prosper estate, and primary custody of her two sons.
