PlayStation Lawsuit and $7.85M Sony Settlement: Payouts and Deadlines

The PlayStation lawsuit settlement is a proposed $7.85 million deal that would resolve a class action accusing Sony Interactive Entertainment of monopolizing digital PlayStation game sales after it cut off third-party retailers from selling download codes in April 2019. A federal judge granted preliminary approval on April 8, 2026, and a final fairness hearing is set for October 15, 2026.¹ If you bought a qualifying digital game on the PlayStation Store during the class period, you are likely already in the class and do not need to file a claim.

What the Lawsuit Accused Sony Of

Before April 2019, you could buy a digital PlayStation game two ways: from the PlayStation Store, or as a “game-specific voucher” (a download code) sold by retailers like Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Those codes let retailers compete on price. In April 2019, Sony stopped allowing retailers to sell them.

Lead plaintiff Agustin Caccuri sued in the Northern District of California in May 2021, alleging that shutting off the voucher channel left the PlayStation Store as the only place to buy digital PlayStation games, and that Sony then charged inflated prices. Plaintiffs’ attorneys argued digital games on the PlayStation Store cost, on average, 75 percent more than their physical counterparts, with some titles priced as much as 175 percent higher.² The claims were brought under the Sherman Antitrust Act, the Clayton Act, and California’s Unfair Competition Law.³

Sony denies wrongdoing and says no court has ruled it violated any laws.⁴ The settlement resolves the case without any admission of liability, and it does not require Sony to change its practices. Plaintiffs had sought an injunction to force Sony to allow third-party digital code sales again; the settlement does not include that relief.⁵

Who Qualifies

The settlement class covers U.S. residents who bought a digital game through the PlayStation Store between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023, where that game had previously been sold as a game-specific voucher at retail. Two additional filters apply to each eligible title: it must have had at least 200 voucher redemptions before April 2019, and its post-discount price after April 2019 must have increased by at least $0.50 compared to the pre-April 2019 period.⁶

Qualifying titles include No Man’s Sky, Bloodborne Complete Edition Bundle, The Last of Us, and God of War, among others. The full list is posted on the settlement website.⁷ More than 4.4 million people are estimated to be in the class.³

How Much You Can Expect and How You Get Paid

Payment for most class members comes as a credit deposited directly into the PlayStation Network wallet, not as a check. If your PSN account is still active, you do not need to do anything: the credit will appear automatically after final approval. If your PSN account has been deactivated, you can request a cash payment instead by contacting the settlement administrator by August 27, 2026.³

The credits do not expire and can be spent on anything available in the PlayStation Store, including nearly 2,000 games priced under $2 and 118 games listed at $0.19.⁵

Individual payouts will be small. The $7.85 million fund first pays attorneys’ fees (capped at 25 percent), administrative costs, and up to $30,000 in service awards. What remains is divided equally among all eligible class members. The court was given an estimated range of $0.91 to $33.66 per person, and CNET reported that most members will “likely see a couple of dollars” in their accounts.⁴

Deadlines to Watch

July 2, 2026: Deadline to opt out of or object to the settlement.
August 27, 2026: Deadline for holders of deactivated PSN accounts to request a cash payment.
October 1, 2026: Deadline to file a notice of intention to speak at the fairness hearing.
October 15, 2026: Final approval hearing before U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín.

Opting out means giving up your share of the settlement but keeping your right to sue Sony on your own over the same conduct. Objecting means telling the court you think the deal is unfair while remaining in the class.

Where the Case Stands

Getting to this point has taken time. Judge Martínez-Olguín rejected earlier versions of the settlement twice over concerns that the PlayStation Store credits might qualify as “coupons” under the Class Action Fairness Act (which triggers stricter scrutiny) and that class members had not been told enough about what they would actually receive. She also questioned $10,000 service awards proposed for two former plaintiffs, Caccuri and Neumark, who were no longer class members, stating that “someone who is not a member of the class has no business taking a penny from that fund.”⁵

The revised version addressed those concerns by pointing out that the credits do not expire, are broadly usable, and by giving the court a per-person recovery estimate. Preliminary approval followed on April 8, 2026.¹ Payments will not go out unless and until the judge grants final approval at the October 15 hearing.

The Separate UK Lawsuit

A much larger case against Sony has been playing out in the United Kingdom, and it is easy to confuse the two. Consumer campaigner Alex Neill brought a collective proceedings claim before London’s Competition Appeal Tribunal, alleging Sony abused its dominant position by forcing digital game and in-game purchases through the PlayStation Store and charging a 30 percent margin above digital wholesale prices.⁸

The UK claim covers purchases between August 19, 2016 and February 12, 2026, and was structured as an opt-out case covering an estimated 12.2 million UK consumers. It has been valued at roughly £2 billion ($2.7 billion), with Neill’s legal team estimating eligible users could receive around £162 each. The trial ran from March 10 to May 8, 2026, and a tribunal decision is expected anywhere from three to 18 months after closing arguments.⁸ Sony has defended its model, arguing its margins are not excessive and that the 30 percent commission subsidizes console costs, which are often sold at a loss.⁹

The UK case is entirely separate from the U.S. settlement. Being covered by one does not affect the other.
