There is no credible proof that the 2020 election was rigged. Every serious test of that claim — more than 60 lawsuits, statewide recounts and audits, federal cybersecurity reviews, peer-reviewed academic research, and the findings of Donald Trump’s own Justice Department — reached the same conclusion: no fraud occurred on a scale that could have changed the outcome. The people and companies that spread the fraud claims have since paid some of the largest defamation settlements in American history, and several of the lawyers who argued the claims in court have been disbarred or convicted of crimes.
What the Courts Found
Trump and his allies filed more than 60 lawsuits in state and federal courts after the November 2020 election. Some were withdrawn. Others were dismissed on procedural grounds, such as lack of standing or waiting too long to file. But many were decided on the merits, with judges — appointed by presidents of both parties — reviewing the actual evidence. They found it did not hold up.1Campaign Legal Center. Results of Lawsuits Regarding 2020 Elections
Judges described the allegations in unusually blunt language. In Costantino v. City of Detroit, the court called the fraud claims “guess-work” that lacked basic details like locations, frequency, or specific individuals. In Bower v. Ducey, the court said the evidence relied on “anonymous witnesses, hearsay, and irrelevant analysis of unrelated elections.” In one Arizona case, the plaintiff was ordered to pay the defendant’s legal fees for filing a “groundless” lawsuit that appeared aimed at undermining public confidence rather than vindicating any real legal claim.1Campaign Legal Center. Results of Lawsuits Regarding 2020 Elections
The highest-profile attempts collapsed at the top of the system. In Texas v. Pennsylvania, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s bid to challenge results in four other states, finding Texas lacked standing. In Gohmert v. Pence, a federal court rejected the theory that the vice president could unilaterally refuse to certify Electoral College results.2American Bar Association. Election Law Litigation
The Dominion Voting Machine Theory
One of the most repeated claims was that Dominion Voting Systems machines flipped votes from Trump to Biden. Courts found no evidence of it. In Law v. Whitmer, the court found no proof of voting device malfunction. A peer-reviewed study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Andrew Eggers, Haritz Garro, and Justin Grimmer compared counties that used Dominion machines with those that used other systems and found no statistical difference in outcomes once basic demographic and state-level factors were accounted for. The researchers attributed the original claims to “P-hacking and careless data analysis.”3Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. No Evidence for Systematic Voter Fraud
Ballot Tampering and “Dead Voters”
Claims of altered ballots, manipulated counts, and dead people voting also failed. In Ward v. Jackson, the Arizona ballot duplication process was shown to be 99.45% accurate, with the small error rate attributable to human mistakes. In King v. Whitmer, the court found no evidence any physical ballots had been altered. Rudy Giuliani’s widely circulated claim that thousands of Philadelphia ballots had been cast in the names of dead voters — including boxer Joe Frazier — was later found by a New York appellate court to be false.1Campaign Legal Center. “Statistical Impossibility”
Some proponents argued the result was “statistically impossible.” Charles Cicchetti, in an affidavit for Paxton, put the probability of Biden’s win at essentially zero. The PNAS researchers called the method “deeply misguided”: the test confirmed only that the 2020 election differed from 2016, which is true of any two elections. Applied to unrelated comparisons such as Super Bowl ratings, the same method would also “prove” fraud. Related claims — that Biden’s win was suspicious because he carried fewer counties than Trump, or that bellwether counties pointed the wrong way — turned out to track well-documented, decades-long shifts in where Democratic votes are concentrated, not any irregularity.3Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. No Evidence for Systematic Voter Fraud
Audits and Recounts Confirmed the Results
Every official recount and audit in the contested battleground states confirmed the original count. Georgia conducted a statewide risk-limiting audit with a full manual tally of the presidential contest. It matched the machine count, with the highest county-level discrepancy at 0.73% and most counties showing no change.5Georgia Secretary of State. 2020 General Election Risk-Limiting Audit Wisconsin recounted Milwaukee and Dane counties at the Trump campaign’s request; the results did not change. Michigan’s secretary of state ran a statewide audit that confirmed the outcome. Pennsylvania legal challenges all failed.6MIT Healthy Elections Project. Recounts and Election Contests
The most scrutinized audit was in Maricopa County, Arizona, where the state senate hired a firm called Cyber Ninjas, led by Doug Logan, a public supporter of “Stop the Steal” claims. Before that review, Maricopa County had already retained two federally certified testing laboratories; both found no anomalies, no malicious software, and no internet connectivity on the tabulation equipment.7Maricopa County. Correcting the Record The Cyber Ninjas report, released in September 2021, actually found 360 more votes for Biden than the official count. Maricopa County officials later identified roughly 80 of Cyber Ninjas’ ancillary claims as misleading or false, and 14 separate fraud lawsuits in the county were dismissed or withdrawn. Cyber Ninjas shut down in January 2022, after a judge imposed a $50,000-per-day fine for refusing to release public records tied to the audit.8NBC News. Cyber Ninjas Shutting Down
What Federal Officials and Trump’s Own People Said
On November 12, 2020, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Election Infrastructure Government Coordinating Council issued a joint statement calling the November 3 election “the most secure in American history.” It stated: “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.”9CISA. Joint Statement on Elections Infrastructure
On December 1, 2020, Trump’s own Attorney General, William Barr, told the Associated Press: “To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election.” Barr said both the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security had investigated and failed to substantiate claims that voting machines had been programmed to skew results.10NPR. Barr Says No Election Fraud Has Been Found by Federal Authorities
The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack concluded that Trump promoted the fraud claims after his own advisers, lawyers, and government officials told him they were baseless. Chairman Bennie Thompson said flatly: “Donald Trump lost an election and knew he lost an election.” Testimony showed Barr had called the claims “bogus,” “silly,” “crazy stuff,” and said Trump had become “detached from reality.” Campaign manager Bill Stepien, White House lawyer Eric Herschmann, and Jared Kushner all advised Trump against pursuing them. Sidney Powell later conceded in defamation litigation that her public statements about voting machines were not statements of fact. Vice Chair Liz Cheney summarized the evidence this way: “The Trump campaign legal team knew there was no legitimate argument fraud, irregularities or anything to overturn the election. Yet President Trump went ahead with his plans for January 6, anyway.”11Colorado Newsline. Trump Spread Claims of Election Fraud Debunked by His Own Legal Team
How Rare Voter Fraud Actually Is
The 2020 claims land on top of a long record showing that voter fraud in the United States is vanishingly rare. The Brennan Center for Justice puts voter impersonation rates between 0.0003% and 0.0025%. A comprehensive study covering 2000 to 2014 identified 31 credible instances of impersonation fraud out of more than one billion ballots cast. A Department of Justice investigation of the 2002 and 2004 federal elections found 0.00000013% of ballots were fraudulent, with no evidence of in-person impersonation or any coordinated effort to influence outcomes.12Brennan Center for Justice. Debunking the Voter Fraud Myth
Courts have reached the same conclusion. The Fifth Circuit identified only two in-person impersonation convictions out of 20 million Texas votes over a decade. The Fourth Circuit noted North Carolina “failed to identify even a single individual who has ever been charged with committing in-person voter fraud.” In Crawford v. Marion County Election Board, the U.S. Supreme Court said the record contained “no evidence of any fraud actually occurring in Indiana at any time in its history.”12Brennan Center for Justice. Debunking the Voter Fraud Myth
Even the Heritage Foundation’s database, assembled by a conservative organization that advocates stricter voting laws, lists roughly 1,100 cases spanning several decades. The Brennan Center has called that figure “grossly exaggerated and devoid of context,” representing a “molecular fraction” of total votes cast nationwide. An Associated Press count of fraud cases in the six battleground states Trump disputed in 2020 found fewer than 475, less than two-tenths of one percent of Biden’s margin of victory in those states.13Brennan Center for Justice. The Price Paid by People Who Spread the Claims
The voting technology companies at the center of the conspiracy theories sued, and the financial fallout has been severe. Dominion Voting Systems brought defamation suits against Fox News, Newsmax, Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Mike Lindell, and others. Fox News settled with Dominion in April 2023 for $787.5 million, one of the largest defamation settlements in American history, as the case headed to trial.15NPR. The lawyers who argued the fraud theories have faced professional and criminal consequences. Giuliani was disbarred in New York on July 2, 2024, after a court found he “repeatedly made false statements” about the 2020 election. John Eastman, author of the theory that Vice President Mike Pence could refuse to certify the Electoral College results, was disbarred in California on April 16, 2026, when the state supreme court denied his final appeal.4PBS NewsHour. In August 2023, a Fulton County, Georgia grand jury indicted Trump and 18 co-defendants on racketeering and other charges tied to efforts to overturn the state’s result. Several co-defendants pleaded guilty:
- Sidney Powell pleaded guilty in October 2023 to six misdemeanor counts of conspiracy to intentionally interfere with election duties. She received six years of probation, a $6,000 fine, an apology letter requirement, and an obligation to testify against co-defendants.22NPR. Sidney Powell Georgia Guilty Plea
- Kenneth Chesebro pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one felony count of conspiracy to commit filing false documents. He received five years of probation, a $5,000 fine, 100 hours of community service, a requirement to testify truthfully, and an apology letter to Georgia’s citizens.23PBS NewsHour. Chesebro Pleads Guilty
- Jenna Ellis pleaded guilty in October 2023 to one felony count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. She received five years of probation, a $5,000 restitution payment, 100 hours of community service, and agreed to testify against co-defendants. At her plea hearing she said: “If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges.”24NPR. Jenna Ellis Georgia Guilty Plea
In a separate Michigan proceeding, Powell and co-counsel were sanctioned and jointly ordered to pay more than $175,000 in attorneys’ fees. Judge Linda Parker described their affidavits as filed in “bad faith,” called the claims “really fantastical,” and recommended that state bars investigate the attorneys for possible suspension or disbarment.25Forbes. The 2025–2026 Federal Investigations
After returning to office, the Trump administration opened renewed federal investigations into the 2020 election. FBI Director Kash Patel said in April 2026 that the Justice Department had “all the information we need” and that “arrests” were “coming soon.” As of mid-2026, no arrests had been made.26Votebeat. FBI Investigation 2020 Election
In January 2026 the Justice Department seized roughly 656 boxes of 2020 election materials from Fulton County, Georgia, the first time the federal government had seized state election records over the objection of local officials. It also subpoenaed records from Arizona’s partisan review and demanded ballots from Wayne County, Michigan, while the FBI interviewed poll workers in Milwaukee over affidavits submitted in 2020.27Just Security. Magistrate Judges Federal Election Records When Fulton County challenged the seizure, U.S. District Judge J.P. Boulee denied the motion to return the records in May 2026, though he described the search warrant affidavit as “far from perfect” and “defective in some respects.”28ABC7. Justice Department Can Keep 2020 Election Ballots Seized From Fulton County
Two facts frame these investigations. The five-year statute of limitations for most potential federal charges tied to the 2020 election expired in 2025. And the investigations continue to rely on allegations that have already been examined and rejected by courts, state audits, and prior federal reviews, with no new supporting evidence publicly disclosed.26Votebeat.
