Qaw’mane Wilson Case: Motive, 99-Year Sentence, and Appeals

The Qaw’mane Wilson case is the Chicago murder-for-hire prosecution of an aspiring rapper who called himself “Young QC” and paid a friend to shoot his mother, Uptown hair stylist Yolanda Holmes, as she slept in September 2012. Wilson, the sole beneficiary of Holmes’s estate and two life insurance policies, drained her bank accounts within days and spent the money on cars, designer clothes, and cash-tossing videos he posted online. A Cook County jury convicted him of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and home invasion in March 2019, and he was sentenced to 99 years in prison.¹

The Killing on West Montrose Avenue

In the early hours of September 2, 2012, Yolanda Holmes was asleep in her apartment on the 1000 block of West Montrose Avenue in Uptown. Her boyfriend, Curtis Wyatt, was next to her. Eugene Spencer, a friend of Wilson’s, entered the apartment carrying a 9mm handgun Wilson had given him and opened fire on Holmes in bed.¹

Spencer then turned on Wyatt, shooting him twice and hitting him in the head with the gun eight to ten times. Wyatt fought back, wrestled the weapon away, chased Spencer out of the apartment, and called 911.²

Wilson was on the phone with Spencer during the attack. When Spencer told him the gun had jammed, Wilson instructed him to “make sure the bitch is dead.” Spencer went back in and stabbed Holmes.³ The agreed price for the killing was $4,200. Spencer was paid just $70.⁴

Why He Did It

Wilson later told detectives his motive was “financial gain.” He was the sole beneficiary of his mother’s estate and of two life insurance policies she carried.⁵ Within ten days of the murder, bank records introduced at trial showed he had pulled between $75,000 and $80,000 from a joint account he shared with Holmes,⁶ with earlier reporting placing the total liquidated from her accounts at more than $90,000.⁷

He did not hide the money. Wilson had the Ford Mustang his mother had bought him customized with gull-wing doors, bought a Versace belt, Burberry goods, Air Jordans, and $1,500 puppies, and posted YouTube videos throwing stacks of cash to people he called his “fans.” Luxury cars, jewelry, and his supposed rap-career success filled his Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube feeds.⁷ Relatives at Holmes’s funeral noted that he did not seem devastated. His sudden wealth drew suspicion from people who knew the family.

How Police Built the Case

Detectives spoke with Wilson within days of the killing and again in May 2013, but he was not in custody either time. He blamed Wyatt, suggesting his mother’s boyfriend was responsible.⁴ Investigators, meanwhile, had lobby surveillance footage showing Spencer entering the building at 4:32 a.m. on the night of the killing and a broken headphone cord left at the scene that matched headphones the figure on camera was wearing.

By late 2013, Wilson’s phone was disconnected and his residence looked abandoned. In November, Detective Michelle Wood issued an investigative alert naming him as a potential witness. On December 21, 2013, officers encountered Wilson during a traffic stop involving his associates, brought him to the station, and questioned him. He made incriminating statements, and Detective Wood formally arrested him at 3:58 a.m. on December 22, 2013.⁶ Spencer and Wilson’s then-girlfriend Loriana Johnson, who had driven Spencer to and from the building, were arrested the next day. All three were held without bail.⁸

The Trial and the Evidence Jurors Heard

Wilson and Spencer were tried in Cook County Circuit Court before separate juries. The prosecution rested on a combination of insider testimony, Wilson’s own conduct after the killing, and physical proof tying Spencer to the scene.

Johnson, testifying under a plea deal, described how Wilson asked her to bring a gun to his house, how she drove Spencer to the apartment, and how Wilson later told her the murder was “for the money” and that his mother was an “easy target.”⁶ Wyatt, the surviving victim, identified Spencer as the attacker in a lineup and again in court, and walked jurors through the shooting, the beating, and the fight for the gun.²

Prosecutors backed the testimony with bank records showing Wilson’s rapid withdrawals, cell phone videos of him flashing cash, jewelry, and shoes in the weeks after the killing, lobby surveillance stills of Spencer inside the building, and the 9mm handgun, knife, and DNA evidence recovered from the apartment.⁶

On March 5, 2019, both juries returned guilty verdicts. Wilson and Spencer were each convicted of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and home invasion.¹

The 99-Year Sentence

Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks sentenced Wilson on January 31, 2020. The murder convictions were merged, and Wilson received consecutive terms of 45 years for first-degree murder, 25 years for attempted murder, and 29 years for home invasion, for a total of 99 years.⁹

Wilson told the court before sentencing, “I just want to say, nobody loved my mother more than me. She was all I had. That’s it.” Judge Sacks was not persuaded. “The word is ‘matricide,’ meaning murder of one’s own mother,” he said, calling Wilson “spoiled” and noting that Holmes had given her son a car, a job, jewelry, and designer clothes. “She gave Qaw’mane life, and it was his choice to take it away from her.”¹⁰

The Co-Defendants

Spencer, the gunman, received a 100-year sentence. Johnson pleaded guilty to an amended count of armed robbery in exchange for her truthful testimony against Wilson and was sentenced to 14 years, of which she served roughly seven before being paroled.⁴

Appeals and Where Wilson Is Now

Wilson appealed, challenging the admission of his December 2013 police statements, his lawyer’s handling of the traffic stop that led to his questioning, the admission of the cash-flashing cell phone videos, and the prosecution’s closing arguments. On September 25, 2023, the Illinois Appellate Court rejected every argument and affirmed his convictions and sentence.⁶

Spencer’s appeal went further. On June 5, 2025, the Illinois Supreme Court affirmed his convictions and 100-year sentence, holding that because he has parole eligibility under Illinois law his sentence is not a de facto life sentence. The court left open the possibility that Spencer could raise a proportionate-penalties challenge in a future postconviction proceeding.¹¹

Wilson is incarcerated at Hill Correctional Center in Galesburg, Illinois. His projected parole date is November 20, 2058, and his projected discharge date is November 20, 2061.⁹ He was 23 when he arranged his mother’s murder and 30 at sentencing. At the earliest possible parole date, he would be in his late sixties.
