REE Medical Lawsuit: Complaints, California Law, and Federal Bills

No lawsuit against REE Medical appears in public records. The Encinitas, California company, which coordinates independent medical evaluations and Disability Benefits Questionnaires for veterans pursuing VA claims, has not been named in a court filing, an attorney general action, or a publicly identified VA cease-and-desist letter. What it has drawn is a steady stream of Better Business Bureau complaints about fees and refunds, and a new California law that directly threatens how it does business.

What REE Medical Sells Veterans

REE Medical connects veterans with independent licensed physicians who conduct evaluations and complete Disability Benefits Questionnaires, the standardized forms the VA uses to assess disability severity. The company describes itself as a medical documentation coordinator, not a VA representative, attorney, or claims agent, and says it facilitates “VA-compliant medical documentation through the nation’s largest network of DBQ doctors.”1REE Medical. Through its exclusive partner Claim Climbers, REE Medical also coordinates nexus letters, independent medical opinions arguing a veteran’s current condition is connected to military service under the VA’s “at least as likely as not” standard. The company states it is not a Veterans Service Organization, a law firm, or affiliated with the VA, and cannot guarantee any claim outcome. The VA is not bound to accept any particular DBQ or nexus letter.2REE Medical. Nexus Letter VA: Understanding Independent Medical Opinions for Service Connection

What Customers Are Complaining About

REE Medical’s Better Business Bureau profile shows 95 complaints filed in the last three years, with 38 closed in the most recent 12-month period. Of the 95, 19 are marked resolved and 76 answered.3BBB. REE Medical Inc Complaints

The complaints follow a consistent pattern. Veterans describe aggressive, persistent outreach before payment, followed by silence afterward: unreturned calls, ignored emails, breakdowns in communication. Customers also say marketing promises of “comprehensive” claim support and professional advocacy delivered what amounted to basic medical scheduling.3BBB. REE Medical Inc Complaints

Fees reported in complaints range from roughly $2,795 to $7,500 upfront, with some customers paying an additional “expedited processing fee” of about $500. Refund disputes are common. The company’s contract ties refunds to “the stage of service completion and the time and resources expended,” and customers frequently challenge how REE Medical defines “services commenced.” Some complainants say no medical evaluation was ever conducted, yet the company retained hundreds of dollars in administrative and intake costs.3BBB. Several veterans reported that after paying, the resulting DBQs were denied by the VA, given “limited weight,” or produced no change in their disability ratings, despite what they said were prior assurances of high success rates. Others raised concerns that the VA’s automated screening may flag private DBQs from unaccredited organizations for heightened scrutiny.3BBB. REE Medical Inc Complaints

The Accreditation Question Behind the Complaints

Federal law lets only VA-accredited attorneys, claims agents, and Veterans Service Organization representatives charge fees for preparing, presenting, or prosecuting a veteran’s benefits claim. The VA warns veterans against unaccredited “claims predators.”4U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Beware Claims Predators Want to Prey on Your Benefits

REE Medical positions itself outside that framework by calling its work medical documentation coordination rather than claims assistance. It uses the phrase “VA-compliant” to describe its documentation but does not claim VA accreditation as a claims agent or attorney.1REE Medical. Top Seven Reasons VA Disability Claims Get Denied The argument runs across the wider for-profit consulting industry: that these companies advise on the person or the medical evidence rather than the claim itself, and so fall outside the federal prohibition.5The War Horse. The VA has not accepted that argument. Between 2017 and 2024, VA lawyers sent warning letters to at least 140 unaccredited groups and individuals, accusing them of illegally charging veterans.6The Washington Post. VA Disability Ratings Profit Consultants Reporting by The War Horse identified at least 38 companies as recipients, with activity spiking in 2024.5The War Horse. Enforcement has been weak. Congress stripped criminal penalties from the relevant statute about 20 years ago, leaving cease-and-desist letters as the VA’s main tool. As of late 2025, at least 29 of the 38 identified companies still appeared to be operating.5The War Horse. Veterans Affairs Claim Benefit Company Letters

California’s New Law Puts REE Medical on the Clock

REE Medical is headquartered in Encinitas, which makes California’s new veteran-protection law directly relevant. On February 10, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 694, authored by Senator Bob Archuleta. The law requires federal VA accreditation for any person or entity that prepares, presents, or prosecutes a veteran’s benefits claim, prohibits fees exceeding what accredited attorneys or claims agents may charge under federal law, and makes contracts that violate these provisions void.7Office of Governor Gavin Newsom. SB 694 also extends the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act to veterans’ benefits claims, bars companies from requiring veterans to share login credentials for Department of Defense or VA systems, and sets disclosure requirements for veterans’ benefits presentations by entities not affiliated with recognized government or veterans’ organizations.8Los Angeles County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Attorney General Rob Bonta said the law aims to “degrade and deter the ability of these predatory individuals or companies to exploit veterans.”7Office of Governor Gavin Newsom. Federal Bills That Could Add Real Penalties

Two federal proposals would give the VA sharper tools. The GUARD VA Benefits Act (H.R. 1732), introduced by Representative Chris Pappas on February 27, 2025, would reinstate criminal penalties for charging veterans unauthorized fees. It has 134 cosponsors but a 9 percent estimated chance of enactment, according to GovTrack.11GovTrack. The PLUS for Veterans Act of 2025 would go further, adding Title 18 criminal penalties for unauthorized fees, allowing fines up to $50,000, and imposing multi-year bars on recognition for violations by conditionally recognized agents and attorneys.13U.S. Congress.
