Rex Heuermann Update: Guilty Plea, Life Sentence, and DNA Ruling

Rex Heuermann, the Long Island architect accused in the Gilgo Beach killings, pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, to murdering eight women, and on June 17, 2026, a Suffolk County judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The plea and sentence closed the criminal case against him without a trial.

What Heuermann Pleaded Guilty To

In Suffolk County court, Heuermann admitted to three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, and four counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack.1CBS News. Heuermann waived his right to appeal and his right to testify. He also agreed to sit for interviews with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit about his background and motivations. His defense attorney, Michael Brown, said the plea was meant to spare the victims’ families a trial and to protect Heuermann’s own family.4The New York Times. Gilgo Beach Plea Deal Heuermann

The case had been headed for a September 2026 trial. Two pre-trial rulings by Judge Timothy Mazzei in September 2025 appear to have pushed Heuermann to resolve it. Mazzei admitted whole genome sequencing DNA evidence, a first in a New York courtroom, and ordered that all seven murder charges be tried together.3CNN. Gilgo Beach Killings Rex Heuermann Guilty Brown later called the evidence “overwhelming,” pointing to the nuclear DNA results and a planning document investigators recovered from Heuermann’s devices that laid out methods for killing victims and disposing of remains. “Those two sealed the deal for us and I think for him,” Brown said.5CBS News. That planning document, on Heuermann’s devices, contained sections labeled “Supplies,” “Problems” (listing “DNA”), “body prep,” and “post event.”6CNN. The Sentence

On June 17, 2026, Judge Mazzei imposed three consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder convictions, plus four consecutive terms of 25 years to life for the second-degree convictions.9CNN. Family members of several victims gave impact statements. Heuermann sat feet away from them and refused to look up. Nicolette Brainard-Barnes, daughter of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, described her mother as “warm, bubbly, funny, intelligent and artistic” and said Heuermann “needs to be locked away for the safety of the community.” Amanda Funderburg, sister of Melissa Barthelemy, told him: “You can look at me while I’m talking. It’s been about 17 years since we spoke. Don’t even bother saying you’re sorry because no one believes it.”11News 12. The Eight Victims

Heuermann admitted strangling all eight women. The killings spanned 1993 to 2010, and most of the victims were women he had solicited for sex.12ABC News. Alleged Victims of Gilgo Beach Suspect Rex Heuermann

  • Sandra Costilla, 28, killed in 1993, found in North Sea, New York.
  • Karen Vergata, 34, disappeared in February 1996; partial remains found on Fire Island that April and near Tobay Beach in 2011.
  • Valerie Mack, killed in 2000, long known only as “Jane Doe #6”; remains found in Manorville and along Ocean Parkway in 2011.
  • Jessica Taylor, 20, disappeared in July 2003; remains found in Manorville that month and near Gilgo Beach in 2011.
  • Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, vanished in 2007; found at Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
  • Melissa Barthelemy, 24, disappeared in July 2009; found at Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
  • Megan Waterman, 22, disappeared in June 2010; found at Gilgo Beach in December 2010.
  • Amber Lynn Costello, 27, disappeared in September 2010; found at Gilgo Beach in December 2010.

The last four became known as the “Gilgo Four” after their remains were discovered within days of each other during a search for Shannan Gilbert, a woman who had disappeared in the area. Gilbert’s remains were later found in a marsh, and authorities do not believe her death was a homicide.13CBS News. Long Island Serial Killings Investigation Timeline

The DNA Ruling That Shaped the Case

The prosecution’s case leaned heavily on whole genome sequencing, a technique that allowed investigators to extract usable DNA profiles from degraded, rootless hair fragments recovered from six of the victims. Traditional forensic methods could not produce results from samples like those. Mazzei’s September 2025 ruling admitting the evidence was the first of its kind in New York and only one of a few nationwide.14ABC News. The defense had argued that the technology was untested in a New York courtroom and challenged the statistical methodology used by the testing lab, Astrea Forensics. Mazzei rejected those arguments, finding that the defense offered no “empirical proof to refute the validated empirical evidence” and that whole genome sequencing was “generally accepted in the relevant scientific community.”15Courthouse News. The FBI Interviews

Heuermann is required under his plea agreement to sit for interviews with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Tierney described the sessions as “sort of an academic exercise” aimed at understanding what “created him” and “drove him.”16NBC News. The interviews were expected to begin shortly after the June 2026 sentencing. Former FBI profiler James R. Fitzgerald cautioned that although Heuermann agreed to cooperate through his attorneys, he is not under a legal mandate to complete the sessions and “could still back out.” Former FBI official Robin Dreeke predicted Heuermann would try to control the process: “I don’t think he will lie; he’ll probably inflate, he’ll probably omit things.”17NewsNation. What Is Still Unresolved at Gilgo Beach

Heuermann’s plea accounted for eight sets of remains found along Ocean Parkway, but at least four others discovered in the area have not been connected to him. The remains of Tanya Jackson and her toddler daughter, Tatiana Dykes, long known as “Peaches” and “Baby Doe,” were identified through genetic genealogy in April 2025. In December 2025, the child’s father, Andrew Dykes, was arrested and charged with Jackson’s murder. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said Jackson “was not murdered by a serial killer, but allegedly by the man she loved, and the father of her child.”18Nassau County DA. Andrew Dykes Arrest

One victim remains unidentified. Known as “Asian Doe,” the skeletal remains of a biological male of Asian descent, aged 17 to 23, were found off Ocean Parkway in April 2011. The victim was wearing women’s clothing and is believed to have died from blunt force trauma in 2006 or earlier. Investigators have determined through genetic genealogy that the victim was likely of South Chinese descent, but identification efforts have been hampered because Asian individuals are underrepresented in commercial genealogy databases.19CNN. Gilgo Beach Killings Asian Doe Asked whether Heuermann might be responsible, Tierney said, “It doesn’t matter what I believe, it matters what I can prove.”20CNN. Gilgo Beach Victims

After the sentencing, Tierney said the broader investigation was not finished. “The work goes on,” he said, noting that Suffolk County has 1.5 million residents and “a lot of unsolved cases.” He said his office would keep applying the same investigative methods that produced the Heuermann conviction. “We’ll follow that evidence wherever it leads,” he said, “and we hope to hold the people responsible for what they’ve done, whether it’s this defendant or any other defendant.”21NewsNation.
