Rob Reiner’s Son Nick: Murder Charges, Trust Fund Fight, Addiction

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of director Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the December 14, 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home. The Nick Reiner murder case is being prosecuted by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with a multiple-murder special circumstance, which makes it eligible for the death penalty or life without parole. Reiner has pleaded not guilty, remains held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, and is next due in court on September 15, 2026.

What Happened on December 14, 2025

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead in the master bedroom of their home on the 250 block of Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood on the afternoon of Sunday, December 14, 2025.¹ Their daughter Romy Reiner discovered the bodies after a massage therapist could not reach the couple.² The Los Angeles Fire Department responded around 3:30 p.m.³

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that both victims died of “multiple sharp force injuries” and ruled the deaths homicides.⁴⁵

Investigators focused on Nick Reiner the same day. That evening, Los Angeles detectives working with the U.S. Marshals Service located him in a park near the University of Southern California and arrested him without incident at about 9:15 p.m.⁶ Surveillance footage from an Arco gas station near Exposition Park showed him buying a sports drink roughly an hour before the arrest.⁷ Prosecutors have filed a special allegation that he personally used a knife; authorities have not publicly confirmed whether the weapon has been recovered.⁸

The Night Before at Conan O’Brien’s House

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, Rob and Nick Reiner attended a Christmas party at the West Los Angeles home of television host Conan O’Brien.³ Attendees described Nick as anxious and erratic. He reportedly moved around the room asking guests whether they were famous.⁹ After interrupting a private conversation involving comedian Bill Hader and being told it was private, he stood staring before storming off.¹⁰

Sources described a “very loud” shouting match between father and son after Rob confronted Nick about his behavior being “inappropriate.”³ Rob and Michele left the party upset and expressing concern about Nick’s state.¹⁰ Investigators have been working to trace Nick’s movements between leaving the party and his arrest the following night.

The Charges and Potential Penalties

District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office charged Nick Reiner with two counts of first-degree murder, a special circumstance of multiple murders, and a special allegation of personally using a deadly weapon.¹¹ The multiple-murder special circumstance makes the case eligible for either capital punishment or life in prison without the possibility of parole. Deputy district attorneys Habib Balian and Jonathan Chung are handling the prosecution.⁷

Hochman has said the case is death-penalty eligible but that no decision has been made on whether to seek it.¹² Nick Reiner’s siblings are reportedly opposed to capital punishment.¹³

Where the Case Stands

Nick Reiner first appeared in court on December 17, 2025, wearing a blue anti-suicide smock issued at Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where he is being held.¹⁴¹⁵

Reiner was formally arraigned on February 23, 2026, and pleaded not guilty to both counts. At an April 29, 2026 hearing he waived a preliminary hearing date, and proceedings were pushed into the fall while prosecutors and defense attorneys continued reviewing more than two terabytes of evidence and autopsy reports.¹³ The next hearing is set for September 15, 2026. After his arrest Reiner was placed on suicide watch, then later moved into solitary confinement.¹⁵

The Trust Fund Fight

A separate legal battle is playing out in probate court. In June 2026, Nick Reiner’s attorneys filed a petition in Los Angeles County seeking access to a trust set up in his name in 1993, shortly after his birth. The trust is valued at more than $1.5 million and is separate from the larger Reiner family estate.¹⁶ Under its terms, Nick was entitled to half the assets at age 30 and the remainder at 35. He turned 30 in 2023 but, according to the filing, never received that distribution.¹⁷

Reiner wants the money to rehire Alan Jackson as his private defense attorney. Jackson has stated that his firm is “ready, willing, and able to resume representation” if the funds come through.¹⁸ His siblings initially agreed to cover private counsel costs but later reversed course, according to court filings.¹⁷

The trustee, attorney Paul Kanin, refused to release the funds, citing concerns about Nick Reiner’s capacity to manage a trust. His legal team called those justifications a “shifting series of excuses” and argued that the distribution terms are mandatory regardless of capacity questions.¹⁷ The petition also invokes the presumption of innocence, arguing that under California law Reiner retains his inheritance rights while the criminal case remains unresolved.¹⁶

Kanin notified Reiner’s representatives in April 2026 that he intended to resign, with Jodi Montgomery named as incoming trustee.¹⁹ By mid-June 2026, Montgomery indicated she intended to file court documents asking a judge to approve release of the funds.²⁰ A hearing on the petition is scheduled for August 17, 2026.

California’s slayer statute, Probate Code Section 250, bars a person who “feloniously and intentionally kills the decedent” from inheriting under the decedent’s will or trust. A conviction would treat Nick Reiner as having predeceased his parents for inheritance purposes, cutting him off from the larger family estate. The pending petition, however, concerns the children’s trust his attorneys argue was already legally his.

Mental Illness and Addiction History

Nick Reiner’s struggles with addiction and mental illness have been publicly documented for years, in part because they were the basis for the 2015 film Being Charlie, which he co-wrote with Matt Elisofon and his father directed. By his own account, Nick began using drugs at 15 and had been through rehab more than 18 times by his early twenties.²¹ He experienced periods of homelessness, violent outbursts within the family, and a cocaine-induced heart attack on an airplane.²² A family friend recalled outbursts severe enough as early as age 11 that he had to be physically restrained.²³

Sources cited in news reports say Reiner was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder around 2020.²⁴²¹ Legal analysts have raised the possibility of an insanity defense, and early reporting noted that investigators and defense attorneys have been working to piece together Reiner’s full psychiatric and substance abuse history.¹⁴

Who the Victims Were

Rob Reiner, born in 1947, first became known as Mike “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family before directing When Harry Met Sally…, A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride, and Stand by Me. He was also a hands-on Democratic political figure who spearheaded California’s 1998 Proposition 10 tobacco tax and chaired the resulting First 5 commission from 1999 to 2006,²⁵ and co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which hired Ted Olson and David Boies to challenge California’s Proposition 8.²⁶

Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and film producer who met Rob in 1989 while working as a set photographer on When Harry Met Sally…. They married that year and had three children: Jake (born 1991), Nick (born 1993), and Romy (born 1997).²⁷ Rob Reiner also had a daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to Penny Marshall.²⁸

On December 17, 2025, Jake and Romy Reiner released a joint statement through a family spokesperson. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they wrote. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”²⁹ They asked the public for “respect and privacy” and urged that “speculation be tempered with compassion and humanity.”
