Robert Milton: Redding Murder Case and Air Canada Executive

The name Robert Milton currently points to two unrelated people in the public record: Robert Parker Milton, a 35-year-old Redding, California man convicted in April 2026 of murdering his 71-year-old neighbor, and Robert A. Milton, the former Air Canada chief executive who now sits on the boards of Spirit Aviation Holdings, Air Lease Corporation, and previously chaired United Airlines Holdings. This article covers both.

Robert Parker Milton: Redding Neighbor Murder

A Shasta County Superior Court jury convicted Robert Parker Milton of first-degree murder on April 15, 2026, for fatally shooting William Alan Dressler on a residential street in the Enterprise neighborhood of Redding. The same verdict included three felony counts of resisting an executive officer and one misdemeanor count of destroying or concealing evidence.¹ Two weeks later, on April 30, 2026, a second jury phase found Milton legally sane at the time of the killing, rejecting the defense argument that mental illness left him unable to understand what he was doing.²

What Happened on Wilshire Drive

Around 10:00 a.m. on August 29, 2024, officers responded to reports of gunfire near Wilshire Drive and Brent Road. They found William Alan Dressler dead near a driveway. He had been shot and then struck twice with a landscaping cinder block. Dressler was simply walking through the neighborhood when Milton confronted him.³

Prosecutors said Milton became enraged because he believed Dressler, who was wearing a pink shirt, was a member of the “Mexican Mafia.” After the killing, Milton went home and threw his clothing and the cinder block into an algae-covered swimming pool. He was armed when officers took him into custody and attacked investigators during questioning, which produced the three felony resisting charges.² Neighbors told authorities they had seen several recent incidents of erratic behavior from Milton and had taken to calling him “Crazy Rob.”³

Why the Trial Took Until 2026

At Milton’s first court appearance in September 2024, Shasta County Superior Court Judge Adam Ryan suspended criminal proceedings and ordered psychological evaluations. Two court-appointed doctors declared him incompetent to stand trial, and he was sent to Napa State Hospital for treatment. Milton was found restored to competency in late May 2025, and criminal proceedings resumed.⁴ A shortage of available courtrooms delayed the case further before it finally went to trial in early 2026.

The Sanity Phase

Defense attorney Michael Borges did not dispute that Milton killed Dressler. He argued instead that Milton suffered from a mental disorder that “caused him to lose control.”² A forensic psychologist testified for the defense that Milton was “psychotic” during the killing. Milton’s ex-wife, Maria Milton, was called as the final witness. Through her, the defense highlighted text messages Milton sent in the days before the shooting, which described beliefs that the Mexican mafia was targeting him, that his housekeeper and her husband were involved, and that he would be killed and replaced by a doppelganger.⁵

During the sanity phase, defense experts testified that Milton suffered from schizophrenia and experienced paranoid delusions that Dressler posed a threat to him. The jury rejected the argument, concluding on April 30, 2026 that Milton understood his actions and understood they were wrong.⁶

Sentence Exposure and Next Court Date

Milton faces a maximum possible sentence of 50 years to life in prison, plus an additional four years and four months. The first-degree murder conviction carries 25 years to life, with a consecutive 25 years to life for the firearm-discharge enhancement. The three felony resisting counts carry a combined possible sentence of four years and four months, to run consecutively. He is scheduled to appear in Shasta County Superior Court on June 22, 2026, for a presentence investigation report and the setting of a formal sentencing date.²

Robert A. Milton: Airline Executive

Robert A. Milton, a Canadian-American airline executive born around 1959, is best known for running Air Canada as president and CEO from 1999 to 2004, taking the airline through creditor protection, and then reorganizing it under a holding company that spun off its business units to public investors. He was appointed president and CEO of Air Canada at age 40, after joining the airline in 1992 as a consultant and rising to chief operating officer in 1996.⁷

Air Canada’s CCAA Restructuring

In 2000, Milton led Air Canada’s acquisition of Canadian Airlines International. The merger ran straight into the dot-com collapse, the September 11 attacks, high fuel prices, and the 2003 SARS outbreak.⁸ Between 2000 and 2004, Air Canada lost nearly $5 billion.⁹

On April 1, 2003, Milton placed Air Canada under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, Canada’s equivalent of Chapter 11. Over 18 months his team extracted more than $1 billion in wage and benefit concessions from unions and secured $1.1 billion in financing from a consortium led by Deutsche Bank. The restructuring cut Air Canada’s debt from $13 billion to $2.8 billion. An earlier financing deal with Victor Li’s Trinity Time Investment had collapsed after unions rejected a demand to convert their pensions from defined-benefit to defined-contribution plans.¹⁰ Air Canada emerged from creditor protection on September 30, 2004, reorganized under a new parent company called ACE Aviation Holdings Inc., with Milton as chairman, president, and CEO.⁹

ACE Aviation and the Spinoff Strategy

Milton argued that Air Canada’s business units were worth more as independent entities than as divisions of a single airline, and he set out to prove it by carving them out and selling stakes to the public.⁷¹¹⁹ Jazz Air, the regional feeder carrier, was repositioned as an independent airline able to bid on contracts with other majors, and a stake was sold publicly. Air Canada Technical Services, the maintenance unit, proved harder to spin off. Across its lifespan, ACE distributed more than $5 billion to shareholders.¹⁰

Milton’s pay drew sharp criticism from labor. Between 2005 and 2009, his total compensation exceeded $82.7 million; in 2009 alone it more than doubled to $14.7 million, including $7.6 million in severance and payouts and $5 million in incentive awards tied to winding down ACE. Paul Strachan, then president of the Air Canada Pilots Association, called the payouts “obscene.” Katherine Thompson of the Canadian Union of Public Employees said union concessions had saved Air Canada only for it to be “broken into pieces and sold off.”¹² Some analysts argued ACE amounted to financial engineering rather than a business turnaround, a view that gained weight when Air Canada needed a second restructuring in 2009 to avoid insolvency.¹⁰

Current Board Roles

In April 2016, Milton was named non-executive chairman of United Continental Holdings (now United Airlines Holdings) as part of a board overhaul negotiated with activist shareholders, and he formally took the role at the company’s annual meeting that June.¹³¹⁴

He is currently lead independent director at Air Lease Corporation, where he also chairs the nominating and corporate governance committee and sits on the audit and compensation committees.¹⁵ In March 2025, he was appointed to the board of Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc., the restructured parent of Spirit Airlines, when the company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy; SEC filings indicate he serves as chairman of that board.¹⁶ He is also an emeritus board member of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and wrote an autobiography, Straight From the Top.¹⁷
