The Ron Jeremy trial never happened. The adult film performer, whose legal name is Ronald Jeremy Hyatt, was charged in Los Angeles with 34 counts of sexual assault involving 23 alleged victims, but on January 17, 2023, Superior Court Judge Ronald S. The Charges Prosecutors Filed
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the first charges on June 24, 2020, accusing Jeremy of raping and sexually assaulting four women in incidents dating to 2014.2NBC Los Angeles. The counts included:
- 11 counts of forcible rape
- 8 counts of sexual battery by restraint
- 6 counts of forcible oral copulation
- 5 counts of forcible penetration by a foreign object
- 1 count each of sodomy, assault with intent to commit rape, assault with intent to commit forcible digital penetration, penetration of an unconscious or sleeping victim, and lewd conduct with a 15-year-old girl
A separate 14 potential cases were declined because the statute of limitations had expired. If convicted on everything charged, Jeremy faced a maximum sentence of more than 330 years to life in state prison. He pleaded not guilty to all counts at his June 26, 2020 arraignment.1NPR. A Los Angeles County grand jury returned a formal indictment on August 25, 2021 after hearing testimony from 21 women and girls. Why the Case Never Reached Trial
In March 2022, defense attorneys raised concerns about Jeremy’s mental state. He had been observed nonresponsive in his jail cell, unable to recognize his own attorney, and refusing to use his wheelchair.5Los Angeles Times. Medical experts appointed by both sides reviewed Jeremy’s records and interviewed him, his relatives, and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who dealt with him in custody. They concluded he suffered from severe dementia and found no evidence he was faking. What an Incompetency Finding Means in California
Under California Penal Code section 1367 and related statutes, once a court finds substantial evidence that a defendant cannot understand the proceedings or assist in their own defense because of a mental disorder, criminal proceedings must be suspended.8California Courts. California Rules of Court, Rule 4.130 The state cannot proceed to trial, accept a guilty plea, or impose a sentence. The state then attempts to restore competency, usually through treatment at a state hospital, with a two-year cap on that effort.
When a defendant is found not restorable, as Jeremy was, the criminal charges are typically dismissed, though they can be refiled if the defendant ever regains competency. For defendants deemed dangerous, California offers a mechanism called a Murphy conservatorship, which allows long-term civil commitment by expanding the definition of “gravely disabled” to cover individuals found incompetent on charges involving serious physical harm to others.9Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Release From Jail to a Private Residence
Jeremy’s health kept declining after the incompetency ruling. He was placed under a conservatorship in March 2023, and by late that year he was described as essentially bedridden, with medical facilities having rejected him.10Los Angeles Times. In November 2023, Judge Harris granted a request to release Jeremy from the Twin Towers correctional facility to a private residence. The Public Guardian’s assessment described him as practically bedridden and unable to leave on his own.11Fox 5 New York. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office objected, citing public safety. Prosecutors argued that even bedridden, Jeremy could potentially assault caregivers, and said he had allegedly attempted such actions at previous facilities. Deputy District Attorney Paul Thompson filed a motion to reconsider the housing placement, prompting a hearing on November 30, 2023. Judge Harrison also ordered the Office of the Public Guardian to investigate whether Jeremy qualified for a Murphy conservatorship, while noting that there could be a three-year waitlist for a state hospital bed. How Accusers Responded
Alana Evans, president of the Adult Performance Artists Guild and one of the grand jury witnesses, said she felt “100% let down by the system.” She said authorities had always told her Jeremy would be sent to a facility, never home, and argued that the lack of a conviction “absolves him” in the eyes of his defenders.14Yahoo News. Lianne Young, a former British adult film performer who publicly identified herself as a victim in 2020, called Jeremy’s release “profoundly disturbing” and encouraged other survivors to come forward. Ginger Banks, who compiled an early wave of public allegations against Jeremy in 2017, said she believed he was now “too sick to do any more damage” and had been “convicted in the court of public opinion.”14Yahoo News. The Civil Cases That Did Move Forward
The criminal case is frozen, but civil litigation has produced results. In August 2023, two women sued the Rainbow Bar and Grill and its parent company, Rockin’ Horse Inc., alleging the establishment was negligent in allowing Jeremy to prey on female patrons for years. The plaintiffs said bar staff knew he was a predator but gave him access to restricted areas, including an employee restroom where assaults allegedly occurred. More women joined, and at least nine plaintiffs were involved by the time the litigation resolved. On April 15, 2025, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark Epstein confirmed that a global settlement had been reached through mediation covering all of the cases against Rockin’ Horse.
