The Christmas Eve 2022 Arrest
Shortly after midnight on December 25, 2022, Putnam County deputies and fire-rescue crews responded to a single-vehicle crash at Sisco Road and Olivia Lane in Pomona Park. When Deputy Richard Tisdale tried to remove him from the vehicle, Cummings attempted to drive away, then pushed the deputy. In the struggle that followed on the ground, he reached for the deputy’s firearm. The deputy’s radio was knocked loose. Fire-rescue personnel helped subdue Cummings, and he was arrested. The Charges He Pleaded To
Deputies field-tested a substance found on Cummings and initially identified it as oxycodone. When the Florida Department of Law Enforcement ran its own lab analysis, the substance turned out to be dimethylpentylone, a designer drug sometimes sold as ecstasy or molly.4News4Jax. On November 19, 2024, Cummings entered an open no-contest plea to all seven charges: trafficking in phenethylamines (10 to 200 grams), battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, depriving an officer of means of protection or communication, possession of a controlled Schedule II substance, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Sentencing Hearing
Defense attorney Terry Shoemaker asked the court for a “downward departure” from sentencing guidelines. He argued that Cummings suffered from mental health conditions unrelated to substance abuse, citing a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder tied to Haleigh’s 2009 disappearance and bipolar disorder diagnosed when Cummings was 18. Judge Alicia Washington denied the downward departure request and sentenced Cummings to six and a half years, the bottom of the guidelines. Judge Washington said his actions that night “were not only dangerous to himself, not only dangerous to the officers that encountered him, but also dangerous to the general public. Why He Was Only Recently Out of Prison
This is the second time Cummings has gone to state prison for drug offenses. In January 2010, he was arrested with his then-girlfriend Misty Croslin and several others in a Putnam County undercover operation targeting the trafficking of prescription painkillers, specifically oxycodone and hydrocodone.6CNN. Cummings was released on October 19, 2022, after about 12 years. The Florida Department of Corrections said he had qualified for “incentive gain time” by serving at least 85% of his sentence, which under the applicable law counted as completion of the term.8Jacksonville.com. Where Haleigh’s Case Stands
Haleigh Cummings disappeared from the family’s home in Satsuma, Florida, on the night of February 9-10, 2009, while Ronald was working the night shift and Misty Croslin was watching Haleigh and her three-year-old brother. In April 2010, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reclassified the case from a missing-person investigation to an unsolved homicide. Then-Sheriff Jeff Hardy publicly stated he did not believe Haleigh was alive.10ABC News. In July 2024, St. Johns County Sheriff Hardwick, who worked on the case as an assistant chief at the time Haleigh vanished, publicly called for renewed attention. He said the case “will just never go away because it was never solved” and acknowledged that leads have largely dried up, while expressing hope that someone with a “guilty conscience” might come forward. Where Misty Croslin Is Now
Misty Croslin, who was watching Haleigh the night she vanished, is also in prison. She pleaded no contest to drug trafficking counts stemming from the same January 2010 undercover operation that led to Cummings’ first conviction and was sentenced to 25 years.
