Rosa Medina Case: Inez Santa Cruz Murder, Forensics, and Guilty Plea

The Rosa Medina murder case involves a Texas woman, Rosa Yareli Medina, who orchestrated the 2012 killing of her childhood friend Inez Santa Cruz, a 27-year-old Navy veteran from southern Arizona. Medina lured Santa Cruz to Texas, where Medina’s then-boyfriend Troy Ray Ryder drugged and shot her. The case went unsolved for nearly eight years until digital forensic technology recovered deleted evidence from Medina’s phone. She was arrested in June 2020 and pleaded guilty to manslaughter in April 2022.¹

Who Inez Santa Cruz Was

Inez Santa Cruz was born on February 13, 1985, and grew up around Nogales, Arizona. She graduated from Nogales High School in 2003 and served in the U.S. Navy, at one point stationed in San Diego.¹ At the time of her death she was living in Sahuarita, Arizona, and working in Tucson.²

She and Medina had been friends for 18 years, having attended Nogales High School together. Medina had lived with the Santa Cruz family for a time during high school, and Santa Cruz’s mother described the two as “like sisters.”³ The relationship had also been romantic at some point. Santa Cruz’s sister Erica later said Medina “always wanted something more,” while Inez maintained they could remain friends.¹

How the Murder Was Carried Out

In late August 2012, Santa Cruz agreed to travel from Arizona to San Antonio to visit Medina and watch Medina’s children while Medina photographed a wedding. On September 1, 2012, her sister drove her to the airport, and Southwest Airlines records and San Antonio International Airport security footage later confirmed she flew to Texas that day.¹

The trip was a trap. Ryder, who had been dating Medina for about three months, picked Santa Cruz up at the airport, posing as Medina’s photography assistant. He drugged her iced tea with benzodiazepines that Medina had provided, then drove roughly 100 miles to a remote hunting ground in Edwards County, Texas, where he shot her twice in the back of the head. He stripped the body and placed a trash bag over her head in what appeared to be an attempt to stage the killing as cartel violence.¹

An autopsy confirmed two gunshot wounds to the back of the head, and toxicology detected benzodiazepines. Ryder was arrested on September 13, 2012, and charged with capital murder. To avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced in 2013 to 75 years in prison, with parole eligibility in 2042. As part of the deal, he gave a full confession and named Medina as the person who planned the killing.¹

Ryder told police Santa Cruz had been blackmailing Medina, threatening to reveal that Medina worked at a gentlemen’s club, which Medina reportedly feared would cost her custody of her children. The Santa Cruz family disputed the blackmail account. Ryder also said Medina had promised him “a wife and kids — family, really,” in exchange for the killing, and that when she handed him the drugs she told him, “I don’t want her recovering in any hospital room.”¹

Why It Took Nearly Eight Years to Charge Medina

Ryder’s confession implicated Medina, but for years prosecutors did not have enough independent evidence to charge her. Medina denied involvement and produced photographs showing she had attended a concert with her children on the night of the killing. Investigators also could not independently corroborate the alleged blackmail motive or tie her to the crime beyond her personal ties to Ryder and the victim.¹

The Santa Cruz family grew frustrated as the years passed. Erica Santa Cruz recalled being told repeatedly that investigators were “getting a little closer” without being able to make a case.⁴ Edwards County Sheriff Pamela Elliott, who had worked the case since 2012, told the victim’s mother she would “never give up till we know who did this to your daughter.”³

The Digital Forensics Breakthrough

The case turned in June 2019, when investigators used newer digital forensic tools to examine Medina’s phone. They recovered deleted text messages and reconstructed her web browsing history. In the week before the murder, Medina had searched for “date rape drugs” and “how to make untraceable calls.” Investigators also recovered a text message confirming Santa Cruz had told Medina she was boarding a flight to Texas, contradicting Medina’s earlier account of minimal contact around the time of the killing.¹

Arrest, Guilty Plea, and Sentence

On June 26, 2020, 452nd District Court Judge Rob Hofmann signed an arrest warrant for Rosa Yareli Medina, then 33. She was booked into the Edwards County Detention Center on June 29, 2020, and charged with first-degree murder, with bond set at $1 million.⁵ Sheriff Elliott described her as an “accomplice, co-conspirator” in the killing.⁴

In April 2022, Medina pleaded guilty to manslaughter rather than the original first-degree murder charge. She is scheduled for release in 2038, at age 51.¹
