Roseanne Barr’s lawsuits fall into two categories: real cases she filed or defended over roughly three decades, and a widely shared story about a massive verdict against ABC that never happened. She has never sued ABC or Disney over her 2018 firing, despite repeatedly saying she would. The litigation that is real involves a tabloid racketeering claim she brought, a privacy suit filed against her by George Zimmerman’s parents, family disputes with her sister and first husband, and a neighbor fight in Hawaii.
Did She Sue ABC Over the 2018 Firing?
No. As of 2025, Barr has never filed a lawsuit against ABC or Disney over the cancellation of the Roseanne revival. In a May 2024 interview she said she planned to, remarking, “Once I sue ABC and own it, then every show I put on will be about a fat bitch from the Midwest.”1Newsweek. The viral claim that a jury ordered ABC to pay Barr $208 million for “stealing” The Conners is not real. Both Snopes and Reuters traced the story to a satire site called Freedom Fictions, which describes its own content as “parody, satire, and tomfoolery.”2Snopes. Legal analysts said at the time that any suit against ABC would face steep obstacles. Michael LeRoy of the University of Illinois noted that the First Amendment restricts government action, not private employers like ABC. Barr’s contract almost certainly contained a morals clause allowing termination for conduct that would “tend to shock, insult or offend the community or public morals or decency.” Loyola Law School professor F. Jay Dougherty went further, telling the Associated Press that the clause could even give the studio grounds to sue Barr for breach, adding, “I don’t think there will be successful lawsuits.” California offers some protection for employee political speech, but Barr’s contract likely designated New York as the venue, and New York has no equivalent statute.4ABA Journal. Barr did reach a settlement with the network when ABC launched The Conners as a spinoff without her. She relinquished her rights to the series, saying she did so “in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved.”5BBC News. Her 2025 Surveillance Claims Against ABC
In a May 2025 Daily Mail interview, Barr said ABC executives had “spied” on her and “monitored everything I did” during the reboot, looking for a reason to fire her. She attributed the alleged surveillance to her support for Donald Trump, saying, “It’s all because I said that I like Trump. A lot of cabals in Hollywood, that’s all they needed to hear: ‘She must be destroyed.'”7The Wrap. The Zimmerman Parents’ Privacy Suit
Robert and Gladys Zimmerman, the parents of George Zimmerman, sued Barr in 2014 after she retweeted their home address to her Twitter followers during the 2012 Trayvon Martin controversy. She had also posted, “If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll rt his address again. maybe go 2 his house myself,” before deleting both messages.9Time. On July 28, 2015, Seminole Circuit Judge Melanie Chase granted summary judgment for Barr. The court accepted the defense position that the address was already publicly available and that Barr’s posts were protected by the First Amendment. The National Enquirer RICO Suit
In October 1990, Barr and her then-husband Tom Arnold filed a $35 million federal lawsuit against the National Enquirer and Star for publishing what they described as stolen love letters. The suit invoked the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and included claims for copyright infringement, conspiracy, invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.11Tampa Bay Times. Family Lawsuits Against Barr
Barr’s sister Geraldine filed a $70 million lawsuit in the early 1990s, claiming half of the comedian’s earnings under an alleged oral agreement. The suit also named Tom Arnold and attorney Mickey Robins. A Los Angeles Superior Court judge dismissed the claim against Arnold in August 1993, and the full case was thrown out in February 1994. Earlier, in August 1990, Barr’s first husband William Pentland had filed a palimony suit in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking at least $15 million from Barr and $3 million from Tom Arnold. Pentland claimed entitlement to half of Barr’s property and support payments, and accused Arnold of undermining the marriage. The Hawaii Nut Farm Neighbor Dispute
Barr’s 46-acre macadamia nut farm in Honokaa, Hawaii, produced its own legal fight. In 2011, neighbors Roree and Richard Oehlman filed a complaint alleging unauthorized grading on Barr’s property that they said could worsen local flooding. Hawaii County ordered the work stopped until permits were obtained.15CBS News. Controversies That Never Became Lawsuits
Some of Barr’s most talked-about incidents produced no litigation at all. Her 2009 Heeb magazine photoshoot, in which she dressed as Adolf Hitler with burnt gingerbread cookies, drew wide condemnation but no reported legal action.17Snopes.
