Rowdy Aguilar Case: Charges, Mental Condition Plea, Sentence

The Rowdy Aguilar case ended in January 2026, when the Utah man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the 2021 aggravated murder of his 15-year-old friend, Ivan “Nik” Vetecnik, in Taylorsville. Aguilar, 17 at the time of the killing, pleaded guilty with a mental condition to first-degree felony aggravated murder in September 2025.

What Happened on May 26, 2021

Security cameras at Aguilar’s home on Elsie Drive in Taylorsville recorded both teens walking inside at about 10:00 a.m. Just over three hours later, Aguilar left alone, his shirt heavily stained with what appeared to be blood. Roughly twenty minutes after that, a nearby business’s camera captured him carrying items consistent with garbage bags a short distance from the trailer behind his home.¹

Aguilar’s father found Vetecnik’s body inside a cargo trailer in the backyard that afternoon after noticing a strong smell of cleaning agents, and he called police.² Unified Police Department officers arrived shortly after 4:00 p.m. and found a substantial amount of blood inside the trailer.³ Dismembered body parts were later recovered from garbage bags behind the residence.¹ The state medical examiner ruled the death a homicide and counted 26 stab wounds, including a fatal wound to the neck.⁴

How Investigators Built the Case

Aguilar was taken into custody without incident the night of the killing. Investigators relied on surveillance video, forensic evidence, and a confession. DNA on a bloody leather glove and a knife recovered from the trailer matched both Vetecnik and Aguilar. During his interview, Aguilar initially denied knowing the victim, then admitted to the stabbing, telling detectives, “I did it.”² Investigators never publicly disclosed a motive.

Who Ivan Vetecnik Was

Vetecnik and Aguilar had grown up together in Taylorsville, and their families considered them close friends.⁴ His aunt and legal guardian, Kerri Ingham, described him as a “gentle giant” who was loving and kind-hearted. He had lost both parents in the two years before his death: his mother to colon cancer and his father to a heart attack.⁵

Charges and Move to Adult Court

Aguilar was initially charged with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and desecration of a human body.⁴ An escape charge was added during the proceedings.⁶ Because he was 17 when the killing occurred, the case was moved from juvenile to adult court based on the severity of the crime.⁷

The Guilty Plea

On September 26, 2025, Aguilar, then 21, pleaded guilty in Utah’s Third District Court to one count of first-degree felony aggravated murder with a mental condition. The remaining charges of criminal homicide, obstructing justice, abuse or desecration of a human body, and escape were dismissed without prejudice.⁶

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said the mental condition designation would not soften the punishment. “We let the defendant plead guilty, but mentally ill as part of this disposition,” Gill said. “It accurately kind of captures the time when this happened, but it is not going to detract away from the sentence that’s going to be available.”⁶ Gill called the crime “tragic and heinous” and said prosecutors worked with the victim’s family to reach the agreement.⁷

What “Guilty With a Mental Condition” Means in Utah

Under Utah Code § 77-16a-104, a plea of guilty with a mental condition triggers a post-conviction hearing on the defendant’s present mental state. If the court finds by clear and convincing evidence that a mental condition exists, it must still impose the same sentence available for any defendant convicted of the same offense. What the court can decide is where that sentence is served, including commitment to the state Department of Health and Human Services for treatment, probation, or custody with the Utah Department of Corrections or a county jail.⁸ The plea acknowledges mental health issues without reducing the punishment.

The Sentence

In January 2026, Aguilar received an indeterminate term of 25 years to life for aggravated murder.² Because he was a minor when he committed the killing, he will remain in a youth secure care facility until he turns 25 and will then be transferred to the Utah State Correctional Facility to finish the sentence.¹

Speaking at the sentencing hearing, Aguilar addressed Vetecnik’s family. “I just want the family to know that Nik did absolutely nothing to me,” he said. “And I’m sorry for being a snake. I’m sorry for being a monster.”²

What the Family Told the Court

Vetecnik’s older sister, Samantha VanTreese, delivered a victim impact statement that drew wide attention. Speaking directly to Aguilar, she said: “You were his friend. He trusted you. My brother looked up to you. And in return, you gave him terror, pain, and his last moments alone.”²

She described her brother as “goofy, soft-hearted, trusting — too trusting” and told the court that what Aguilar destroyed was “not replaceable.” She also said Nik had been “a child still hurting from the death of both of his parents” when he was killed. VanTreese later told reporters she hoped Aguilar would never be released on parole, adding, “We’re also living a life sentence.”⁹
