The first wave of social media addiction lawsuit settlements and verdicts has produced three headline numbers: a $27 million settlement in May 2026 from Meta, TikTok, Snap, and YouTube to a single Kentucky school district; a $6 million jury verdict against Meta and YouTube for one young plaintiff in Los Angeles; and a $375 million civil penalty against Meta in New Mexico. None of these resolves the broader litigation, which still includes more than 2,600 cases consolidated in federal court.
The $27 Million Kentucky School District Settlement
Breathitt County Schools, a rural eastern Kentucky district with an annual budget of about $25 million, was the first school district case chosen as a bellwether in the federal multidistrict litigation. The district had sought more than $60 million to fund a 15-year mental health program, alleging that features like infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications, and algorithmic recommendations hooked students and drove up rates of anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and self-harm.1The Guardian. Trial had been set to begin June 12, 2026 before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the Northern District of California, in MDL No. 3047.2U.S. District Court, Northern District of California. - YouTube (Alphabet): slightly more than $2 million
None of the companies admitted wrongdoing. YouTube also agreed to provide teachers with classroom training on its platform.5Engadget. The $6 Million KGM Verdict
The first individual social media addiction case to reach a jury was tried in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The plaintiff, a 20-year-old woman identified as K.G.M., alleged that Instagram and YouTube used infinite scroll and algorithmic recommendations to create an addictive experience that caused anxiety and depression starting in childhood.6The New York Times. On March 25, 2026, the jury awarded $6 million in combined compensatory and punitive damages, split 70% against Meta ($4.2 million) and 30% against YouTube ($1.8 million), and found the companies had acted with “malice, oppression, or fraud.”7BBC News. Around June 10, 2026, the trial judge denied the companies’ motion to overturn the verdict or grant a new trial, finding the punitive award was “supported by substantial evidence” that the defendants “willfully and consciously disregarded the rights and safety of its minor users.” The court also rejected arguments based on Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act and the First Amendment.8The Lanier Law Firm. The $375 Million New Mexico Penalty
The largest financial hit so far came from a state enforcement case. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez sued Meta in 2023, alleging the company misled consumers about the safety of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp and used recommendation algorithms that steered minors toward sexually explicit material.9BBC News. A second phase, a bench trial on whether Meta’s conduct is a public nuisance, followed in May 2026 before Judge Bryan Biedscheid. At a May 22, 2026 remedies hearing, Biedscheid signaled he was likely to find a public nuisance and was weighing orders that would require Meta to install an independent safety monitor, pause app notifications for minors during school hours, adopt stronger child-safety content policies, and display more prominent health warnings.12Politico. What’s Still Pending
There is no global settlement. Why the Cases Are Reaching Juries
The single most important legal ruling behind these outcomes came before any trial. Judge Gonzalez Rogers denied the platforms’ motions to dismiss, holding that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act does not bar claims aimed at the design of addictive product features, as distinct from claims about user-posted content.14Tech Policy Press.
