Russell Simmons: Allegations, Lawsuits, and Settlements

Russell Simmons’ allegations, lawsuits, and settlements span nearly a decade of litigation that began with #MeToo accusations in 2017 and continues into 2026. More than twenty women have accused the Def Jam co-founder of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape, with alleged incidents dating from 1988 through 2016. Simmons settled with six accusers in 2023 for a combined total of roughly $11 million, but court filings show he has paid only a small fraction of what he owes. He still faces an active rape lawsuit in New York and a defamation suit from a former Def Jam executive, and in 2025 he filed his own $20 million defamation case against HBO. He has never been criminally charged and denies all allegations.

The Accusations

The first public accusation came in November 2017, when model Keri Claussen Khalighi told the Los Angeles Times that Simmons had coerced her into oral sex and penetrated her without consent in 1991.1Billboard. Russell Simmons Sexual Misconduct Allegations Timeline On November 30, writer Jenny Lumet published a guest column in The Hollywood Reporter alleging Simmons raped her in 1991. He announced the same day that he was stepping down from his businesses.

On December 13, 2017, the New York Times published an investigation in which four women described what the paper called a “pattern of violent sexual behavior” from 1988 to 2014, with three of the four alleging rape.2The New York Times. No Criminal Charges

The New York Police Department opened an investigation in December 2017, and by January 2018 at least seven criminal complaints alleging rape had been filed with detectives in the Special Victims Unit.5Rolling Stone. Simmons’ Denials

Simmons has denied every allegation from the start. “I vehemently deny all these allegations,” he said in December 2017. “These horrific accusations have shocked me to my core and all of my relations have been consensual.”2The New York Times. Early Lawsuits That Went Nowhere

Two early civil cases ended without a trial. Filmmaker Jennifer Jarosik filed a $5 million federal lawsuit in California in January 2018 alleging Simmons raped her in 2016. The case was dismissed with prejudice on April 25, 2018, by agreement of both parties, each paying its own legal fees. No reason was given, and a Simmons representative declined to say whether there was a settlement.8Rolling Stone. Russell Simmons $5 Million Sexual Assault Lawsuit Dismissed

A separate $10 million lawsuit by an anonymous accuser was dismissed in November 2020 when Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark H. Epstein granted summary judgment for Simmons, ruling that claims dating to 1988 were time-barred.1Billboard. Russell Simmons Sexual Misconduct Allegations Timeline

The $11 Million in 2023 Settlements, Mostly Unpaid

In 2023, Simmons entered into confidential settlement agreements with six women who had accused him of sexual assault. The agreements, which totaled roughly $11 million, stated explicitly that they did not constitute any admission of liability or wrongdoing. Court filings in 2024 and 2025 show he has paid only a small portion of what he owes.

The first group to go public filed their agreements in New York County Supreme Court in October 2024 after Simmons missed an October 1 payment deadline. Wendy Carolina Franco was owed $515,000, Sil Lai Abrams $1,265,000, and Sherri Abernathy $1,265,000, for a combined total of more than $3 million.9Complex. Russell Simmons Three Million Settlements By November 2025, counsel for the three women said the matter had been “resolved,” though they did not disclose the terms or whether payment had actually been made.10Rolling Stone. In January 2025, three more women filed “confessions of judgment” in the same court, revealing significantly larger unpaid balances. Singer Tina Klein-Baker, who alleged Simmons raped her in the early 1990s while he was her manager, is owed $4.95 million.11Los Angeles Times. Russell Simmons Sexual Assault Settlements Music journalist Toni Sallie, who alleged Simmons raped her at a 1988 party, settled for $3 million and had received only about $60,000 at the time of filing. Aspiring model Alexia Norton Jones, who alleged a 1990 rape in his apartment, settled for $300,000.12Courthouse News Service. Sallie’s filing also sought 20 percent annualized interest accruing from February 2024. No public reporting shows any enforcement actions, asset seizures, or court orders compelling payment.

Active Lawsuits Against Simmons

Drew Dixon’s Defamation Suit

Drew Dixon filed a defamation lawsuit against Simmons in New York Supreme Court on February 15, 2024. She alleged that in the Graham Bensinger interview Simmons publicly accused her of lying about the sexual abuse to “seek fame,” and that he conducted a broader campaign to discredit her in late 2023 and early 2024.13Los Angeles Times. Russell Simmons Sued for Defamation by Former Def Jam Executive As of September 2025, his legal team said he could not pay more than $100,000 in legal fees in the case or a $15,000 penalty for missing a hearing, asserting that he “owns no property in the United States.”10Rolling Stone. Former Def Jam Video Producer’s Rape Lawsuit

On February 12, 2024, an anonymous former Def Jam video producer filed a federal complaint in New York alleging Simmons raped her at his Manhattan apartment in the late 1990s during a meeting about a music video. The suit, filed under the lookback window of New York’s Adult Survivors Act, brought claims for sexual battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false imprisonment, and alleged that the assault led to panic attacks, an eating disorder, and the loss of three jobs.14Billboard. On June 16, 2026, New York state Judge Adam Silvera denied Simmons’ motion to dismiss. Simmons had argued that New York courts lacked jurisdiction because he has lived in Indonesia since 2018, and that a 1997 severance agreement released the plaintiff’s claims. Judge Silvera ruled that New York courts can exercise jurisdiction over anyone who commits a tortious act within the state regardless of current residence, and found a “genuine dispute as to its authenticity” over the severance agreement, which the plaintiff’s attorneys argued had been forged.15Billboard. Simmons’ $20 Million Lawsuit Against HBO

In June 2025, Simmons filed a $20 million defamation, invasion of privacy, and false advertising lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery, HBO, and On the Record directors Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick. The 2020 documentary premiered at Sundance and later streamed on HBO Max. His attorneys alleged the filmmakers ignored exculpatory evidence, including interviews with more than twenty witnesses and his polygraph results.17Variety. Why Collection Has Been Difficult

Simmons’ attorneys have repeatedly told courts he is effectively broke and owns no U.S. property. Opposing lawyers have called those claims “palpably false and self-serving,” pointing to his stake in the Gdas Bali Health and Wellness Resort in Indonesia, which he co-founded with partner Ida Bagus Oka Genijaya in Kumbuh village, and to an ownership interest in a Singapore-based talent agency.10Rolling Stone. About Us Lawyers for Wendy Franco subpoenaed a business firm associated with Simmons and his daughter, Aoki Lee Simmons, and sent her a letter warning that spending her father’s money could make her liable for his outstanding settlement obligations.

Simmons has lived in Indonesia since 2018, and his residence abroad has been a recurring issue in the litigation. The United States and Indonesia do not have an extradition treaty, though with no criminal charges pending, extradition is not currently a factor.
