Rust Consulting Settlement Checks: How to Verify and Cash Them

If you opened your mail and found a check from Rust Consulting, it is almost certainly a legitimate settlement payment. Rust Consulting settlement checks are issued by a Minneapolis-based administrator that distributes money on behalf of courts, the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and state attorneys general in class actions and regulatory cases.1Better Business Bureau. Why a Check Showed Up Without Warning

Rust Consulting is a neutral third-party administrator. It does not decide who gets paid or how much. Courts and government agencies set those terms, and Rust mails the payments.1Better Business Bureau. Rust Consulting, Inc. BBB Business Profile

How to Verify Your Check Before You Deposit It

The FTC offers a short rule for separating real settlement payments from scams: a legitimate check will never ask you to pay money or share account credentials to receive it.5Federal Trade Commission. FTC Sends Checks Totaling More Than $47.2 Million to Consumers Deceived by Invitation Homes A few checks will confirm that your check is the real thing.

Find the case name. A real check or its accompanying letter references a specific legal case. You can look that case up on PACER for federal cases or on your state’s court records site.

Verify the contact information independently. Do not rely only on the phone number or website printed on the check. For FTC-related settlements, type ftc.gov/refunds directly into your browser to find the official number for each active refund program.4Federal Trade Commission. Refund Programs Frequently Asked Questions For state attorney general cases, go directly to your state AG’s website.

Never pay a fee. The FTC states plainly that it “never requires people to pay money or provide account information to get a payment.”5Federal Trade Commission. Watch the Expiration Date

Settlement checks do not stay valid indefinitely. The window varies by case, with common periods of 60, 90, 120, or 180 days from the issue date.6Law Insider. If your check has already expired, a replacement is sometimes possible. It depends on whether money remains in the settlement fund and whether the settlement agreement allows reissuance. FTC-administered replacements must be requested in writing by mail or email, and the FTC processes reissues once a month.4Federal Trade Commission. Uncashed money takes different paths depending on the case. Some funds are redistributed to class members who did cash their checks. Others go to a designated charity through cy pres, return to the defendant, or are paid to the U.S. Treasury.
