The Saatva lawsuit landscape includes four separate actions: an $11.5 million class action settlement over fake “sale” pricing, a District of Columbia suit alleging PFAS “forever chemicals” in crib mattresses marketed as nontoxic, a broader 2025 greenwashing class action covering mattresses, furniture, bedding, and bath products, and an ADA case over website accessibility for blind users. Saatva is operated by Whitestone Home Furnishings, LLC.
The $11.5 Million Fake Discount Settlement
The largest action against Saatva alleged the company ran perpetual “sales,” advertising discounts off inflated “former prices” that customers never actually paid. The consolidated case, Ryan DePauw et al. v. Whitestone Furnishings, LLC, Case No. 24CV25629, was filed in the Circuit Court of Oregon for Multnomah County.1Saatva Mattress Settlement. The complaint cited California’s False Advertising Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 17500 and 17501), which prohibits advertising a “former price” unless it was the prevailing market price within the prior three months, along with the Consumer Legal Remedies Act (Cal. Civ. Code § 1770(a)(9) and (a)(13)) and the Unfair Competition Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200). Who Qualified and What They Got
The settlement covered roughly 100,000 mattress orders and was valued at approximately $11.5 million.1Saatva Mattress Settlement. Saatva Mattress Settlement FAQs Two groups were eligible:
- California residents who placed one or more mattress orders on Saatva.com between May 23, 2020, and May 23, 2024.
- Oregon residents who placed one or more mattress orders on Saatva.com between May 23, 2023, and May 23, 2024.
Each qualifying order was worth $115. Class members who submitted a claim form by October 27, 2024, received a cash payment. Those who did not file automatically got a $115 store credit voucher valid for three years on Saatva.com. Multiple qualifying orders paid $115 apiece.3Saatva Mattress Settlement. PFAS in Crib Mattresses
In August 2024, two nonprofits, Toxin Free USA and Beyond Pesticides, sued Saatva in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia under the D.C. Consumer Protection Procedures Act. The complaint alleges Saatva marketed its crib mattresses as “nontoxic,” “safe,” “natural,” “eco-friendly,” and “chemical-free” while independent lab testing reportedly detected eight per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS or “forever chemicals,” in the product. It also challenges Saatva’s use of third-party certifications such as GREENGUARD Gold, Cradle to Cradle GOLD, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100, arguing they were deployed to falsely reassure parents.5Beyond Pesticides. The 2025 Greenwashing Class Action
A wider suit followed in March 2025. Melissa Williams and Helen Colby filed Williams, et al. v. Whitestone Home Furnishings LLC, Case No. 1:25-cv-01527, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.8Top Class Actions. The complaint asserts violations of state consumer protection laws, breach of express and implied warranties, and unjust enrichment. It seeks class certification, damages, and a jury trial. Website Accessibility Under the ADA
In Douglass v. Whitestone Home Furnishings, LLC d/b/a Saatva, Case No. 2:25-cv-00460, a blind plaintiff who uses screen reader software alleged Saatva’s website and mobile applications were not compatible with such aids, denying full and equal access under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The case was filed April 3, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.10Saatva. Motion for Preliminary Approval With Exhibits
The parties reached a settlement on March 28, 2025, before filing. Under its proposed terms, Saatva would bring its digital properties into conformance with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Levels A and AA, and would be barred from relying solely on “overlay” solutions. Saatva would also appoint an Accessibility Coordination Team, retain an outside accessibility consultant to audit its properties, train employees, and create a public feedback mechanism for users to report barriers. Saatva denies liability. The class representative would receive a $1,500 incentive award, and Saatva agreed to pay class counsel up to $50,000 for initial work with potential additional payments of $15,000 per year for up to two years of monitoring.
