Samantha Ibarra Case: Plot, Murder, and 99-Year Sentence

The Samantha Ibarra case refers to the February 2015 kidnapping and murder of Ernest “Ernie” Ibarra Jr. in Titus County, Texas, orchestrated by his wife, Samantha Nicole Wohlford. She recruited three men to attack Ibarra in their home, staged the scene to look like a home invasion in which she too was a victim, and was later convicted of both aggravated kidnapping and murder. A Titus County jury sentenced her to 50 years for the kidnapping, and a Camp County jury added 99 years for the murder, to be served consecutively — a combined 149 years in prison.1KLTV. The Victim and the Marriage

Ernie Ibarra was 29 years old, working two jobs to support a household with five children. He ran bat manufacturing machines for D-Bat during the day and worked nights at a Little Caesars.2Oxygen. Samantha Wohlford Has Husband Ernie Ibarra Kidnapped, Killed

He married Wohlford in 2014. The marriage was troubled almost from the start. The couple fought over Ibarra’s gaming, and Wohlford had launched a YouTube channel documenting her life as a young mother, hoping to earn income from it. Ibarra’s sister Abigail later said Wohlford had begun paying less attention to the children and treating the channel as more important than the family. In 2014, Wohlford called police and accused Ibarra of attacking her, resulting in his arrest and an emergency protective order. His family has maintained the allegations were false.2Oxygen. How the Plot Came Together

Wohlford met Johnathan Kyle Sanford at a hospital where his girlfriend had just given birth. She told him about the alleged abuse, and, by his later account, Sanford said he “could take Ibarra out of the picture.” He brought in two others: his brother-in-law Jose Antonio Ponse, and Octavious Lamar Rhymes.2Oxygen. The first plan was to plant methamphetamine in Ibarra’s truck so he would be arrested. On February 19, 2015, Wohlford, Sanford, Rhymes, and Wohlford’s children drove together to buy the drugs for the setup. During that trip, the group decided that killing Ibarra would be easier than framing him.2Oxygen. The Night of February 20, 2015

In the early morning hours, Sanford, Ponse, and Rhymes entered the home through a door Wohlford had left unlocked.4Supreme Court of the United States. Rhymes v. Texas, Petition for Writ of Certiorari They beat and pistol-whipped Ibarra in his bedroom, then continued the assault downstairs. Wohlford would later claim the men held her at knifepoint, forced her to watch, and then bound and gagged her upstairs. The three tied Ibarra’s hands behind his back with painter’s tape, told him he was being kidnapped because his father owed them money, loaded him into Wohlford’s Chevy Equinox, and drove off.1KLTV. They took him to a wooded area called Sand Crossing, southeast of the Lone Star Steel Mill in Camp County, and forced him to walk down a game trail into the woods. After Ibarra tripped and fell face-down, Ponse pressed a gun muzzle against the back of his head and fired a single shot, killing him.4Supreme Court of the United States. Rhymes v. How the Story Fell Apart

When relatives found Wohlford tied up, the Titus County Sheriff’s Department responded to what looked like a home invasion. Deputies found the front door broken in pieces, blood on a wall, and a lock of hair near the door, but no valuables were missing. Wohlford told them three masked men in baggy clothing had broken in around 1:00 a.m., attacked her husband, and dragged him away.1KLTV. Investigators traced Ibarra’s cell phone to Pittsburg, Texas, around 3:20 a.m., but the signal went dead before they could locate him. Sheriff Tim Ingram and his team noticed inconsistencies in Wohlford’s account, and the staging looked wrong. During questioning, she offered a partial story: she said she had met a man called “Johnny Reb” at a hospital the previous day and had lent him her car, suggesting he might have acted on his own after hearing about the alleged abuse.2Oxygen. The break came from her phone. While officers were still searching for Ibarra, Wohlford had been texting Rhymes: “Kill [Ernie’s] phone. Shut that s–t down…Ditch phone. Move.”2Oxygen. Deputies found Sanford and Ponse near the Titus County Regional Hospital, where Sanford’s girlfriend had recently given birth. One of them confessed and named Rhymes as the third man. Sanford eventually led investigators to the murder scene in Camp County, where Ibarra’s body was recovered in the woods. The murder weapon was later found hidden underneath Rhymes’ residence.3FindLaw. Rhymes v. State of Texas Rhymes was arrested on February 26, 2015.2Oxygen. Charges, Trials, and Sentences

Because the kidnapping happened in Titus County and the killing in Camp County, the cases were split across two jurisdictions. All four defendants faced aggravated kidnapping and murder charges.

Johnathan Sanford and Jose Ponse each pleaded guilty to both counts in April 2016 and received 50-year concurrent sentences. Sanford became a key prosecution witness in the later trials.3FindLaw. Rhymes v. State of Texas

Octavious Rhymes went to trial and was convicted on both counts. A Titus County jury gave him 23 years for aggravated kidnapping; a Camp County jury gave him 75 years for murder. The sentences were ordered to run consecutively.1KLTV. Titus County Sheriff: Wife Sentenced to 99 Years for Husband’s Murder

Wohlford was tried separately on each charge. In March 2017, a Titus County jury convicted her of aggravated kidnapping and sentenced her to 50 years.5KLTV.
