Samsung S22 Software Update Lawsuit: Claims, Class, and Status

The Samsung S22 software update lawsuit is a proposed class action filed in January 2026 by two New York owners who say Samsung’s October 2024 One UI 6.1.1 update permanently destroyed their Galaxy S22 phones and that the company then refused to honor warranties or pay for repairs. The case, Ramnath v. Samsung Electronics America, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and covers Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra devices.1Top Class Actions. What the Update Did to the Phones

Samsung began rolling out One UI 6.1.1 to Galaxy S22 series phones in the fall of 2024. Within days, owners reported devices freezing, overheating, crashing, and getting stuck in reboot loops that cycled on and off without the phone ever fully starting.2SamMobile. Galaxy S22 One UI 6.1 Update Bootloop Stuttering Issues According to the complaint, the sustained reboot cycles generated enough internal heat to cause “solder joint fatigue,” physically damaging the connections between the processor and the motherboard.3Get Out of Debt. Once that happened, the damage was permanent. Factory resets did nothing. No later patch could fix it. Samsung-authorized service centers diagnosed the problem as a “fried motherboard.”4Android Police. Who’s Covered by the Proposed Class

The proposed class covers all U.S. residents who bought a Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, or S22 Ultra within the four years before the complaint was filed on January 27, 2026.1Top Class Actions. If your phone was damaged, keep what you have: repair quotes, service center diagnoses, receipts for replacement devices, and any correspondence with Samsung or your carrier. These are the records a claim form would eventually ask for.

Samsung’s Response and Why Repairs Weren’t Covered

Samsung eventually acknowledged that a version of its SmartThings Framework app was “causing some Galaxy devices to reboot” and pulled that app update. It did not issue a broader recall, offer refunds, or set up a free repair program for owners whose devices were destroyed.6ClassAction.org. Owners who contacted support were walked through generic steps like safe mode and factory resets, which could not help a phone with physical motherboard damage. At authorized service centers, motherboard replacements were quoted around $500 in the United States and over £500 in Europe, often approaching or exceeding what the phone was worth used.7Samsung Community Forum. Samsung’s position was that hardware warranties don’t cover damage caused by software updates. Because many S22 phones were more than two years old by late 2024, Samsung also classified a large number of them as out of warranty.8Samsung Community Forum. What the Lawsuit Claims

The complaint names Samsung Electronics America Inc. and Samsung Semiconductor Inc. and brings claims for:1Top Class Actions. Samsung Class Action Alleges Software Update Bricked Galaxy S22 Smartphones

  • Breach of express warranty, pointing to Samsung’s marketing promise of four years of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
  • Breach of implied warranty, on the theory that the phones were impliedly warranted to work safely with the manufacturer’s own updates.
  • Negligent misrepresentation, for presenting the update as a routine enhancement without disclosing the risk of device failure.
  • Unjust enrichment.
  • Violations of New York consumer protection statutes.

A central allegation is that Samsung knew or should have known about the risk before pushing the update, including through similar defect patterns in earlier models and likely internal bug reports before the global rollout.3Get Out of Debt. Not the Same as the South Korea Throttling Case

A separate Galaxy S22 lawsuit in South Korea, filed in 2022 by 1,882 consumers, concerned Samsung’s Game Optimizing Service throttling device performance. The Seoul High Court issued a forced mediation decision in early 2026, and the ruling was finalized in March 2026 after neither side objected, requiring Samsung to pay compensation; the plaintiffs had originally sought 300,000 Korean won (roughly $200) each.10Phone Arena.
