Shannon Beador has been named in or brought into three notable legal matters: a September 2023 DUI and hit-and-run in Newport Beach that left her on probation through late 2026, a 2018 defamation suit filed by Jim Bellino that was dismissed in her favor, and a March 2024 breach-of-contract suit from her ex-boyfriend John Janssen that she settled for $60,000 in November 2024. The Shannon Beador lawsuits below are the ones that have actually reached a courtroom, along with the divorce settlement that shaped her finances heading into them.
John Janssen’s $75,000 Loan Suit, Settled for $60,000
In March 2024, John Janssen sued Beador in Orange County Superior Court for breach of oral contract and promissory fraud. He alleged he had lent her $75,000 for a facelift, sent in two pieces: a $40,000 wire in January 2022 and a $35,000 personal check in May 2023. His attorneys said emails and texts would prove the money was a loan. Janssen’s then-fiancée, Alexis Bellino, separately claimed a “forensic accounting” showed he had spent about $350,000 on Beador during their relationship, on top of the disputed $75,000.
Beador said the money was a gift. Her attorney, Dave Beitchman, said she offered $70,000 to resolve the dispute if both sides signed a mutual non-disparagement agreement, and that Janssen rejected those terms. By the time of the RHOC Season 18 reunion, Janssen had lowered his demand to $70,000.
On November 7, 2024, both sides requested a jury trial. Eight days later, on November 15, Janssen filed a Notice of Settlement of Entire Case, and the court dismissed the action with prejudice on November 22, 2024. Beador settled for $60,000, and a source confirmed the final agreement contained no non-disparagement clause. Beitchman called the suit “shameful” in a November 19, 2024 statement and said Beador settled because defense costs would have exceeded the amount at stake.
The 2023 DUI and Hit-and-Run
On the night of September 16, 2023, Beador crashed her car into a residential property on Clubhouse Avenue in Newport Beach, causing about $24,100 in damage to a concrete planter and wall. Her blood alcohol level was measured at .24 percent, three times the legal limit. First responders found her bleeding from her left eye, crying, and stumbling on the sidewalk. She was arrested and released the next morning after posting $2,500 bail.
Beador later said on the Season 18 premiere of RHOC that she had driven to Janssen’s home that evening, argued with him, and “rev’d up the engine so that he could know how mad I was” before losing control seconds later. Her dog was in the backseat.
Prosecutors charged her with three misdemeanors: driving under the influence, driving with a BAC of .08 percent or above, and hit-and-run with property damage. On November 2, 2023, her attorney entered a plea of no contest to the DUI and the elevated-BAC count. The judge dismissed the hit-and-run charge after confirming Beador had made full restitution to the homeowner, who did not want to pursue prosecution. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer had asked for 30 days of jail; the judge denied that request.
Her sentence: 36 months of informal, unsupervised probation, 40 hours of community service, and a nine-month alcohol program. As of July 2025, Beador confirmed she was still on probation, which is set to expire around November 2026.
The 2018 Jim Bellino Defamation Suit
In 2018, Jim Bellino, ex-husband of former RHOC cast member Alexis Bellino, filed a $1 million defamation lawsuit in California Superior Court against Beador and co-star Tamra Judge. The complaint included defamation, false light, trade libel, and interference with prospective economic advantage, all tied to comments the two made during a live taping of Heather McDonald’s Juicy Scoop podcast at the Irvine Improv.
Bellino alleged Beador said his trampoline park businesses no longer existed “because they were sued” and that she wouldn’t let her kids go “because people get paralyzed.” He accused Judge of calling him “shady,” describing his divorce as a “sham,” and saying he was “going to jail.” He claimed the remarks cost him more than $1 million in potential business.
Both defendants filed anti-SLAPP motions under California law, which protects speech on matters of public interest. On January 7, 2019, the court granted Beador’s motion in full, finding her statements were protected speech and that Bellino had not shown competent evidence of special damages tied to his trampoline park. Judge’s motion was granted in part but denied as to her “going to jail” statement, which the court found could be an assertion of fact.
Bellino appealed the dismissal of Beador’s case. In October 2020, the appellate court affirmed. Beador was awarded $137,340.25 in legal fees, out of the more than $220,000 she had requested. She later said her total defense cost was around $300,000. Judge, whose portion of the case continued, said hers exceeded $500,000. Alexis Bellino has denied being a party to the lawsuit, though Beador has said Alexis sent her a “cease-and-desist type letter” and warning texts before the suit was filed.
Divorce From David Beador
Beador’s divorce from her husband of 17 years, David Beador, predates the lawsuits above and set the financial backdrop. Shannon filed in December 2017, months after their September 2017 separation. The settlement was signed on April 24, 2019, and their marital status was terminated on July 1, 2019.
David paid Shannon a lump sum of $1.4 million to equalize community property. He was also ordered to pay $10,000 per month in combined support for ten years, through April 2029, split as roughly $2,935 in child support and $7,065 in spousal support, with the spousal portion non-modifiable. The couple shares joint legal and physical custody of their three daughters, Sophie, Stella, and Adeline, and neither parent can move out of Orange County without the other’s consent.
