Shannon Crawley today remains incarcerated in North Carolina, serving life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2007 murder of Denita Monique Smith. The former Guilford Metro 911 dispatcher was convicted in February 2010, lost her appeal in 2011, and continues to maintain she did not kill Smith.1Oxygen. She has never admitted to the killing. According to the most recent reporting, she “continues to proclaim her innocence from behind bars.”1Oxygen. Shannon Crawley Denita Smith Murder What Happened Her position throughout the trial and since has been that Greensboro police officer Jermeir Stroud was the actual killer and that she was coerced into driving him to the scene.5WRAL. What She Was Convicted Of
On January 4, 2007, a maintenance worker found Denita Smith shot in the head at the bottom of a stairwell at the Campus Crossing Apartments in Durham, North Carolina. Smith was 25, a graduate student in mass communications at North Carolina Central University, and newly engaged.1Oxygen. Shannon Crawley Denita Smith Murder What Happened She had been shot in the back of the head as she left her apartment.
Smith’s fiancĂ© was Jermeir Stroud, a Greensboro police officer. He had also been in a sexual relationship with Shannon Crawley. Crawley testified she became pregnant by Stroud and had an abortion, and said she did not know about his relationship with Smith.6ABC7NY. Shannon Crawley Trial Report Prosecutors argued Crawley learned of the engagement after seeing Stroud and Smith together at church, and that she killed Smith out of jealousy.5WRAL. The Evidence Against Her
Several pieces of evidence pointed the jury toward Crawley. A maintenance worker, Michael Hedgepeth, saw a woman matching her description sitting in a burgundy SUV at the apartment complex about two hours before Smith’s body was discovered. He heard what sounded like gunfire and saw the woman crying hysterically before she drove off. Crawley drove a red Ford Explorer.5WRAL. Denita Smith Murder Case Timeline7FindLaw. State v. Crawley
A coworker at the 911 center, Ronald Simpson, testified he had sold Crawley a .38 Taurus Special revolver in October 2006. The bullet recovered from Smith was in the .38 caliber family, consistent with a revolver like the one Crawley bought. Gunshot residue was found on the driver’s seat of her vehicle. Cell phone tower records placed her phone near the Durham apartment complex the day before the shooting, while Stroud’s phone was relaying through towers in Greensboro, which prosecutors said showed Crawley had scouted the location alone.7FindLaw. State v. Crawley
Her credibility was also damaged by shifting statements. She first told investigators on January 5, 2007, that she did not know Smith and had never owned a gun. Months later she changed her account to say Stroud had coerced her into driving him to Durham by threatening to kill her children.7FindLaw. State v. Crawley5WRAL. Denita Smith Murder Case Timeline
After roughly seven hours of deliberation across two days, the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder on February 22, 2010. Judge Ronald Stephens imposed life without parole. Asked if she had anything to say, Crawley stayed silent.8ABC11. Crawley Convicted, Sentenced to Life At sentencing, Judge Stephens said of the officer at the center of the triangle: “Jermeir Stroud caused a perfect storm to happen and then walked away from it, and that was unfortunate for everyone in this case.”9WRAL. Her Appeal
Crawley’s conviction was reviewed by the North Carolina Court of Appeals. In State v. Crawley, 719 S.E.2d 632 (N.C. App. 2011), the court affirmed the conviction and found “no error” in the trial judgment. One of the appeal’s focal points was the authentication of the cell phone records used to place her near Smith’s apartment the day before the murder. The appeals court held that the trial judge had properly acted as a “gatekeeper” in determining there was sufficient foundation to admit the records.10vLex. State v. Crawley, 719 S.E.2d 632
Her trial attorney, Scott Holmes, had also sought a mistrial after the jury asked during deliberations to hear the complete audio recordings Crawley said captured a confession by Stroud, including portions not played in open court. Holmes argued this violated her Sixth Amendment right to counsel because he had no chance to address the new material in closing argument. Judge Stephens denied the motion, ruling the tapes had been entered into evidence in their entirety and the jury could review them.5WRAL. Denita Smith Murder Case Timeline
The Dateline Podcast “Deadly Engagement”
In September 2025, Dateline NBC released “Deadly Engagement,” a six-part podcast about the case hosted by Josh Mankiewicz. The first two episodes dropped on September 16, 2025, with the rest following on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The series is available on Amazon Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and Pandora.2News & Observer. Dateline Podcast Deadly Engagement4NBC News. Internal Affairs Part 11
The renewed coverage has not changed Crawley’s legal status. Her direct appeal was decided more than a decade ago, and nothing in the available record indicates a pending challenge. She is where she has been since 2010: in prison for life, still saying she didn’t do it.
