Christine Brown, who now goes by Christine Woolley, filed her petition in Utah on September 16, 2024.1AOL. Christine also sought a domestic relations injunction barring both parents from harassment, from disparaging each other in front of Truely, and from taking her on trips without the other parent’s consent. By January 2025 a Utah court confirmed Kody’s paternity and granted Christine primary custody. Both parents were ordered to complete parenting classes and post-divorce counseling.4North Penn Now. The Coyote Pass Property Fight
The family bought the 14-acre Coyote Pass tract near Flagstaff in 2018 for $820,000, originally splitting it into four parcels for Kody and each of his wives as the site of a planned shared compound.5SFGate. Christine cleared out early, signing her interest over to Kody and Robyn in July 2022 for $10.6Realtor.com. The NDA Standoff
Negotiations to sell the land nearly fell apart over a confidentiality agreement that Kody and Robyn asked Meri and Janelle to sign. Janelle said the document would have barred discussion of the sale terms and would have prevented Meri from pursuing repayment of separate money she believed she was owed. Janelle called it a “power play.”9People. Sale and Distribution
Several title transfers cleared the way in March 2025. One plot co-owned by Kody and Janelle was transferred to Janelle and Meri for $10, and two other parcels were moved into the joint names of all four parties on March 27, 2025.11Yahoo Entertainment. Meri’s Unresolved Loan Claim
Alongside the Coyote Pass fight is a separate money dispute over the 2019 purchase of Kody and Robyn’s first Flagstaff home. Meri says she handed over “every penny” from the sale of her Las Vegas house to help fund the purchase. She calls it a loan. Kody contends their divorce decree entitled him to half those proceeds and that any remaining obligation has never been negotiated.13People. Janelle contributed to the same purchase. On a Sister Wives special that aired in January 2026, Robyn said she and Kody had settled with Janelle and were “100 percent square.”12E! Online. Brown v. Buhman: The Polygamy Law Challenge
Years before the internal family disputes, the Browns brought a federal suit challenging Utah’s bigamy statute in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah. The statute prohibited not only holding multiple marriage licenses but also cohabitation with someone other than a legal spouse. On April 11, 2016, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit reversed and vacated that judgment. Judge Scott Matheson Jr., writing for the panel, held the case was moot because Utah County had adopted a policy of prosecuting bigamy only when accompanied by fraud, domestic abuse, or similar crimes.
