Social Media Settlement Updates: K.G.M. and Breathitt County

The social media addiction lawsuit settlement picture, as of mid-2026, comes down to two disclosed results and a lot of unfinished business. A Kentucky school district reached a $27 million settlement with Meta, Snap, TikTok, and YouTube in May 2026, and a Los Angeles jury returned a $6 million verdict against Meta and YouTube in March 2026. Snap and TikTok also settled a separate individual case before trial on undisclosed terms. No global settlement has been reached for the roughly 2,600 individual plaintiffs still waiting in line, and more trials are set for 2026 and 2027.

Where the Cases Stand

The litigation runs on two tracks. The federal multidistrict litigation, In re: Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 4:22-md-03047), is before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in the Northern District of California and includes at least 2,664 pending lawsuits from individuals, school districts, and state attorneys general.1ConsumerNotice.org. The defendants in both proceedings are the same: Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google (YouTube), Snap (Snapchat), and ByteDance (TikTok). Plaintiffs argue the platforms are defective products, pointing to design features like infinite scroll, algorithmic feeds, autoplay, push notifications, beauty filters, and visible “like” counts rather than to any specific user content. That framing was built to avoid Section 230, which generally shields platforms from liability for what users post.3NPR. Meta YouTube Social Media Trial Verdict

The $6 Million K.G.M. Verdict Against Meta and YouTube

The first case to reach a jury was brought by a 20-year-old plaintiff identified as Kaley G.M., who alleged that heavy teenage use of Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok caused depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia, and suicidal ideation.4Courthouse News Service. On March 25, 2026, the jury returned $6 million: $3 million in compensatory damages and $3 million in punitive damages. The jury found both companies negligent, found their platforms a “substantial factor” in the plaintiff’s injuries, and found that they had acted with “malice or fraud,” which is what opened the door to punitive damages. Meta was assigned 70 percent of the award ($4.2 million) and YouTube 30 percent ($1.8 million).5CNBC. Snap and TikTok Settled Before Trial

Two of the four original defendants in the K.G.M. case never faced the jury. Snap reached a confidential settlement in mid-January 2026, and TikTok settled on January 27, 2026.6Courthouse News Service. The $27 Million Breathitt County School District Settlement

The largest disclosed settlement so far came out of the federal MDL’s school district track. Judge Gonzalez Rogers had selected six districts as bellwethers: Breathitt County (Kentucky), Charleston County (South Carolina), DeKalb County (Georgia), Harford County (Maryland), Irvington (New Jersey), and Tucson (Arizona).7American Enterprise Institute. Breathitt County was scheduled for trial in June 2026. In May 2026 the district settled with all four defendants for a combined $27 million, broken down as $9 million from Meta, $8 million from Snap, $8 million from TikTok, and slightly more than $2 million from YouTube.8Kentucky.com. The payments are one-time lump sums, and the district said it plans to spend the money on student mental health programs and social media education.9Bloomberg Law. State Attorney General Cases Are Separate

If you’ve seen headlines about attorneys general suing Meta, those are a separate track from the private settlements above. In October 2023, a bipartisan coalition of 42 state attorneys general sued Meta: 33 joined a single federal suit in the Northern District of California, and nine others plus the District of Columbia filed in their own state courts.11Office of the New York Attorney General. What’s Scheduled Next

There is no global settlement, no class-wide claims process, and no announced settlement framework for the thousands of individual plaintiffs in the MDL. As of June 2026, broader negotiations have not begun, and observers expect they may not start until several more bellwether trials have been completed.1ConsumerNotice.org. Social Media Harm Lawsuit

Each verdict and each disclosed settlement adds to the picture of what these cases are worth, and until a handful more have come in, the companies have little reason to put a global number on the table.
