Stephen William Beal: Spa Bombing, Conviction, and Life Sentence

Stephen William Beal is a Long Beach, California man serving life in federal prison plus 30 consecutive years for killing his ex-girlfriend, Ildiko Krajnyak, with a homemade package bomb at her Aliso Viejo day spa in May 2018. A first jury deadlocked in 2022. A second jury convicted him on all four federal counts in July 2023, and United States District Judge Josephine L. Staton imposed the life sentence in January 2024, calling the crime “cold, calculated” and “chilling.”¹

The Aliso Viejo Spa Bombing

Just after 1 p.m. on May 15, 2018, an explosion tore through a commercial building on Mareblu Street in Aliso Viejo, about 50 miles south of Los Angeles. The bomb was inside a cardboard package left for Krajnyak at her spa, Magyar Kozmetika. She had just returned from a trip to Hungary. She was killed instantly while opening the box behind her desk. Krajnyak was 48, a skin care expert and a mother.¹

Two clients, a mother and daughter, were in the spa when the bomb went off. Both suffered second- and third-degree burns. One of them lost an eye. The daughter pulled her mother out through a wall the blast had blown open.² The explosion destroyed the suite, damaged the building, and put a nearby preschool at risk.³

Who Beal Was to the Victim

Beal and Krajnyak met online in 2016 and dated for about a year and a half. He helped move her spa to the Aliso Viejo location and handled administrative work. He described himself to authorities as a co-owner, and the two were listed as officers of a skin care company called I&S Enterprises.⁴⁵

By January 2018 Krajnyak had ended the relationship and begun dating other men. She told friends Beal was “freaking her out” with constant monitoring and jealous attempts to control her. Prosecutors later showed he had photographed her text messages with other men during a trip to Portugal two months before the bombing, and had threatened suicide when she pulled away.⁴⁶ At trial the government framed the case as “infatuation, obsession and control,” arguing Beal built and planted the bomb after realizing he could not control her.

How Investigators Tied Him to the Bomb

Two days after the explosion, a joint team led by the FBI searched Beal’s Long Beach home. Inside the garage they found two completed improvised explosive devices, three firearms, and roughly 130 pounds of explosive and precursor chemicals, along with a seven-foot model rocket and rocket-making equipment.⁷ Beal was arrested that day on a charge of possessing an unregistered destructive device, but prosecutors dropped the charge within two weeks after questioning whether the materials legally qualified. Beal, who called himself a model-rocket hobbyist, was released on May 27, 2018.⁸

He remained free for nearly ten months while agents worked the forensic case. On March 3, 2019, he was re-arrested on a federal complaint charging malicious destruction of a building resulting in death.⁹

The affidavit laid out how the pieces fit. FBI laboratory testing found “no meaningful differences” between wire fragments recovered from the blast site ceiling and wires taken from Beal’s home. The explosive mixture matched chemicals stored in his garage. Chemical traces from the scene also matched traces in his vehicle. Surveillance footage caught him buying a 9-volt battery with cash six days before the bombing, and three cardboard boxes matching the delivery package eight days before it. Friends of Krajnyak described Beal to the FBI as “jealous, controlling, and possessive.”⁹

Two Trials and a Guilty Verdict

Beal’s first federal trial ended on August 22, 2022, when jurors reported themselves “hopelessly deadlocked” after more than seven days and Judge Staton declared a mistrial. The split was not disclosed publicly. Prosecutors said they would retry the case.¹⁰¹¹

Defense attorney Craig Harbaugh argued through both trials that the FBI made a “snap judgment,” ignored other viable suspects with access to the spa, and mistook the residue of a rocketry hobby for bomb-making. He noted Beal had voluntarily contacted police after the explosion, consented to the search, and sat through three interviews over 12 hours.¹²¹³

The retrial ran four weeks and ended on July 19, 2023, with a guilty verdict on all four counts: use of a weapon of mass destruction resulting in death, malicious destruction of a building resulting in death, use of a destructive device during and in relation to a crime of violence, and possession of an unregistered destructive device.¹⁴

Prosecutors added evidence at retrial that cellular location data placed Beal at the spa multiple times while Krajnyak was in Hungary, and that he monitored her social media and online scheduling. They pointed to his “decades of experience in rocketry” as unusual expertise in both electronics and chemistry, noting he had once built a bomb to kill a neighborhood gopher.¹⁴¹⁵

Life in Prison Plus 30 Years

On January 19, 2024, Judge Staton sentenced Beal, then 64, to two concurrent life terms on the weapons-of-mass-destruction and building-destruction counts, a consecutive 30-year term on the destructive-device count, and a concurrent 10-year term on the possession count.¹

The judge called the crime “chilling,” “cold,” and “calculated.” She said, “He wanted her dead simply because she didn’t want to continue their romantic relationship,” described Beal as “a danger to the public” likely to remain one for the rest of his life, and called the consecutive 30-year portion “symbolic” of the “savage nature of the offense.”³

Family and friends of Krajnyak spoke at the hearing. Her cousin Eva Boni told the court that “after five years of waiting and wondering, our family and friends have peace knowing that Mr. Beal will spend his remaining days in prison.” Close friend Nicole Barrett called Krajnyak “a shining light.”¹⁶ One of the surviving victims said, “Fear has become my foundation and worry my reality.”⁶ Beal maintained his innocence and said he hoped the “person that actually committed this crime” would be arrested. Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said he “could not think of anything more insulting.”

A Separate Federal Fraud Case

Beal also faced federal fraud charges unrelated to the bombing. In an October 2023 plea agreement he admitted to wire fraud, Social Security fraud, and concealment of bankruptcy assets. He had failed to report $350,000 received from his late wife Christine Beal’s estate through an accidental-death insurance lawsuit during a bankruptcy he had begun in October 2009. He also admitted to defrauding an insurance company of more than $1 million through false disability claims and to fraudulently obtaining $350,000 in Social Security benefits.¹⁷

On February 28, 2024, a federal judge in Orange County sentenced him to three years and one month in prison for the fraud, followed by three years of supervised release, plus a $300 fine, with a restitution hearing set for April 2024.¹⁸

Questions Around His First Wife’s Death

The bombing case renewed attention on the 2008 death of Beal’s wife, Christine Beal. By his account, Christine fell down the stairs of their Long Beach home on February 16, 2008, while the two were carrying a 49-pound end table that landed on her pelvis and hip. She died on March 8, 2008.¹⁹

The Los Angeles County coroner ruled the manner of death “undetermined.” The autopsy listed pancreatitis, electrolyte imbalance, and chronic lead intoxication as causes, with blood lead levels 24 times the NIOSH threshold and roughly 100 times the U.S. adult average. The coroner’s report read: “Death is probably natural, maybe trauma contributed but this is not known.”²⁰ An accidental-death policy on Christine had been obtained through Beal’s employer on January 1, 2008, weeks before the fall.²¹ The insurer denied the claim; Beal sued and won $550,000 in March 2011 after a judge ruled the insurer had used an incorrect standard.

In a January 2024 filing, federal prosecutors called Christine’s death “highly suspicious” and noted that Beal had purchased lead tetraoxide from a Virginia pyrotechnics company in the months before she died. The Long Beach Police Department investigated a poisoning allegation after the bombing case began and said detectives “found no evidence to support the claim.” Beal’s daughter, Charlene Brown, said her father had himself been treated for lead poisoning months earlier, which she attributed to home renovation work. Judge Staton said at sentencing that she would not take Christine’s death into account in deciding Beal’s punishment for the bombing.²¹
