Steven Hobbs (Murderer): Victims, Guilty Plea, and Appeal

Steven Alexander Hobbs is the Houston-area murderer who used his job as an armed security guard to prey on sex workers in east Harris County for roughly a decade. In May 2022, after eleven years in the Harris County Jail awaiting trial, he pleaded guilty to the murders of Patricia Pyatt and Sara Sanford and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. Prosecutors believe he killed at least one more woman and assaulted several others. He will not be eligible for parole until he is 101.¹

Who He Was and How He Chose Victims

Hobbs is a six-foot-four man with reddish-blond hair and thick eyeglasses who worked as an armed security guard in the Houston area. Investigators say he used his uniform to gain trust, picking up sex workers under the pretense of driving them to a motel, then taking them to remote spots along the San Jacinto River or in the rural stretches around Crosby, Texas. Once isolated, he assaulted the women at gunpoint and often handcuffed them.² His known criminal activity stretches back to at least 2002.

The Two Murders

Patricia Pyatt, 38, was killed in 2002. Hobbs beat and strangled her and dumped her body in the San Jacinto River near the old Beaumont Highway bridge.³ DNA evidence later tied him to her murder.⁴

Sara Sanford, 48, was found in a wooded area near Crosby in October 2010. She had been sexually assaulted, handcuffed at the wrists and ankles, and shot in the head. DNA recovered from the handcuffs and from her body matched Hobbs.⁵

Other Women He Was Charged With Attacking

The murder charges were part of a broader set of allegations against Hobbs:

The 2002 sexual assault of an unnamed woman near the San Jacinto River along the Beaumont Highway.
The 2010 aggravated assault of Sandra Gunter, 33.
The June 2011 kidnapping and sexual assault of a 43-year-old woman taken at gunpoint to a desolate stretch of Wallisville Road, handcuffed, and beaten with what appeared to be a mop handle.
The 2011 aggravated assault of Danielle Perfitt, 28.

Two additional sex workers reported being assaulted by a man matching Hobbs’s description and wearing a security uniform.²

How He Was Caught

The break came in September 2011, when Wanda Trombley, 57, was found dead near a business in the 6100 block of Red Bluff in Pasadena. Her body was about thirty feet from an entrance where Hobbs worked as a security guard.⁵ Investigators swabbed every guard at the site. Hobbs’s DNA came back a match, and the same profile linked him to the Sanford and Pyatt killings.⁶

Detectives also spoke with local sex workers, who described their attacker as a “very large white male, red hair — very distinctive.”⁷ A woman raped in 2002 near the spot where Pyatt’s body was found identified Hobbs in a photo lineup. He was arrested in October 2011 and held without bond. Hobbs was a suspect in Trombley’s death but was never charged in that killing due to insufficient evidence.

Why the Case Took Eleven Years

Hobbs sat in the Harris County Jail from October 2011 until May 2022, the longest pretrial detention in the jail’s history. Prosecutors pointed to a stack of reasons: a change in the presiding judge after an election, flood damage to the Harris County Criminal Courthouse from Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and the COVID-19 pandemic freezing jury trials. A 2015 trial setting was also put on hold for new DNA testing.⁸ Prosecutors also said Hobbs “avoided being sent from county jail to state prison as long as he could” and refused to cooperate with detectives.⁹

The Guilty Plea and Sentence

On May 2, 2022, the day jury selection was to begin, Hobbs pleaded guilty. The capital murder charge in Sanford’s death was reduced to murder, and he pleaded guilty to murder in Pyatt’s death as well.¹⁰ In exchange, prosecutors dismissed two counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of aggravated kidnapping.¹¹

He received two consecutive life terms, with a twenty-year minimum on the Pyatt count and thirty on the Sanford count, and credit for the roughly ten years already served. His first parole eligibility comes at age 101.¹

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Meriwether said of the plea: “After 11 years, he was going to face the reality that he was going to have to listen to it all again, and he chose instead to take a plea deal.” Prosecutor Sarah Seely said the team believed there was “at least one more murdered victim” and “multiple living victims that were sexually assaulted or assaulted physically by him.”¹¹

What Victims Said in Court

One week after the plea, on May 9, 2022, victims and their families spoke in the 351st District Court. Jude Sanford, Sara Sanford’s 38-year-old son, told the courtroom, “I try my best to tell people who she was — I know who she was labeled as.” He said his mother had struggled with drug addiction and that the last time they spoke was in 2010, when she gave him ten dollars for his birthday. “Throughout all her struggles, she should have been loved more,” he said.¹²

A woman whom Hobbs had raped and left for dead, and whose related charge was dismissed under the plea, had a statement read for her. “You’re a monster and the worst kind of predator — you decided my life didn’t matter,” it read. She then spoke up on her own to say she was praying for Hobbs.

Mariah Trombley, Wanda Trombley’s daughter, was not permitted to testify from the stand after a defense objection. She read her statement to reporters outside the courtroom, saying if her mother “could have saved more women from you quicker, to get you off the street sooner, she would have gotten into that van over and over again in a heartbeat.”¹²

Appeal Attempt and Where He Is Now

In 2023, Hobbs filed a petition from prison seeking a writ of mandamus to force the 351st District Court, presided over by Judge Natalia Cornelio, to rule on motions asking to file a late appeal and to obtain hearing transcripts and case records. On July 6, 2023, the Texas First Court of Appeals denied the petition and dismissed the pending motions as moot.¹³

Hobbs is incarcerated at the Ramsey I unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His parole eligibility date is listed as October 6, 2041.¹⁴
