Super Ego Holding Lawsuit: Fraud, Deductions, Misclassification

The Super Ego Holding lawsuit is a federal class action filed in August 2022 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, accusing Super Ego Holding LLC and a network of affiliated trucking carriers of skimming pay from semi-truck drivers, misclassifying them as independent contractors, and manipulating safety records to evade federal enforcement. The case, docket number 1:22-cv-04127, is assigned to Judge Martha M. Pacold. Twelve named plaintiffs and roughly 800 additional drivers have joined the action, and some estimates put the total number of affected truckers in the thousands.1CDL Life. What the Lawsuit Alleges

Skimming Pay Through Falsified Rate Confirmations

The complaint’s central allegation is that Super Ego’s dispatchers “skimmed off the top” of freight payments owed to drivers. Truckers were promised 88% of the load price. According to the complaint, when a freight broker agreed to pay a given rate, dispatchers created a falsified rate confirmation sheet showing a lower price, then paid the driver 88% of that reduced figure and kept the difference. In one example cited in the litigation, a broker paid $4,800 for a load, but the driver received a confirmation sheet listing only $3,500.4Land Line Media. Deductions That Wiped Out Paychecks

On top of the alleged rate manipulation, drivers say they were charged for escrow accounts that were never returned upon termination, lease payments, trailer rentals, cargo insurance, maintenance and repairs, electronic logging device fees, and registration costs. They also allege they paid full, non-discounted fuel prices at truck stops while the carrier pocketed the fuel discount.4Land Line Media. Lawsuit Reveals More Details About Super Ego Fraud Scheme

The result, plaintiffs say, was paychecks with negative balances. One driver alleged he was not paid at all for a week during which he drove nearly 3,000 miles and was owed more than $2,000. Another said he was told he actually owed the company more than $2,000 after hauling freight over 1,000 miles across two days.4Land Line Media. Misclassification as Independent Contractors

The lawsuit alleges Super Ego treated drivers as independent contractors while exercising employer-level control. Drivers signed agreements requiring them to haul exclusively for one carrier, but were then instructed to work interchangeably across multiple Super Ego-affiliated companies. Carriers dictated which loads drivers hauled and required electronic logging devices with GPS tracking to monitor their movements. Corporate structure was often opaque to the drivers themselves: one plaintiff’s settlement statements came from one company, his 1099 tax form from another, and his truck lease from a third.4Land Line Media. How Super Ego Is Responding

Super Ego denies all allegations. Its defense rests on its characterization of itself as an equipment leasing company rather than a motor carrier. In an April 14, 2026 press release responding to a CBS 60 Minutes report, Super Ego said it “does not hire, pay, supervise or contract drivers or dispatchers,” and that the carriers leasing its equipment “maintain full authority” over their own operations. The company called the broadcast “misleading” and said every claim in it was “false and derives from this central misunderstanding” of its business model. It also contested the use of video showing its trailers, noting that carrier trailers are not required to be marked and are often not connected to the carrier operating the tractor pulling them.7The Trucker. Federal Investigation and Safety Allegations

Alongside the civil case, Super Ego is the subject of an ongoing federal investigation. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek Barrs said on 60 Minutes that Super Ego is one of the agency’s “top ten companies” requiring scrutiny. Investigators and journalists have described the network as a “chameleon carrier” operation, dissolving entities with poor safety records and registering new ones with fresh Department of Transportation numbers to erase violation histories. DOT data cited in the CBS report showed carriers connected to the network logged nearly 15,000 safety violations and 500 accidents over a two-year period.6CBS News. Drivers told CBS that managers based in Serbia remotely accessed electronic logging device apps to reset federally mandated time clocks, allowing dispatchers to push drivers past the legal 11-hour daily driving limit. Drivers also said they were instructed to print new company names and DOT numbers and tape them over existing markings on their trucks to hide the carrier’s identity from inspectors.6CBS News.
