Suzanne Morphew Affair: Jeff Libler, Final Messages, and the Case

Suzanne Morphew’s affair with a man named Jeff Libler — a nearly two-year secret relationship with someone she and her husband had known since high school in Indiana — became one of the central threads in the murder investigation that followed her May 2020 disappearance. Prosecutors have argued the affair, and Suzanne’s decision to end her marriage, gave her husband Barry Morphew a motive to kill her. Investigators only learned about it because of a voice-activated pen Suzanne had hidden in her closet to catch Barry cheating. It caught her instead.

Who Jeff Libler Was

Libler grew up with the Morphews in Alexandria, Indiana. He and Suzanne had a brief relationship after high school before losing touch. In 2018, after Suzanne and Barry moved from Indiana to Colorado in what Suzanne described as a “fresh start” for their troubled marriage, she and Libler reconnected on Facebook.¹²

Libler was a father of six living in Michigan. What began online quickly became intense. He and Suzanne spoke “almost every single day nonstop,” using phone calls, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn, and exchanged intimate photographs. They met in person at least six times, arranging their meetings around trips away from home. They talked about getting married and even fantasized about moving together to Ecuador.²³

How Investigators Found Out

Suzanne had suspected Barry of cheating on her. To catch him, she bought a voice-activated “spy pen” and placed it in her closet. The pen never recorded Barry with another woman. It recorded Suzanne with Libler, including her telling him she loved him and the two of them planning a Valentine’s Day meetup while Barry was away.⁴ Investigators found no evidence Barry was actually having an affair.⁵

The pen recordings gave the FBI a voice but not a name. Agents spent six months identifying the man on the audio as Libler. Once he realized investigators were closing in, Libler deleted his social media accounts, later saying he “didn’t want it to be her legacy.” He then cooperated fully, giving investigators his DNA, phone records, and account passwords. Authorities confirmed he was in Michigan the weekend Suzanne disappeared and cleared him as a suspect.²

The Last Day of Messages

On May 9, 2020, the day before Suzanne vanished, she and Libler exchanged 59 text messages. That afternoon she sent him a selfie investigators would later describe as her final “proof of life” photo. Libler sent a flirtatious message at 2:06 p.m. Suzanne replied at 2:11 p.m. and suggested they continue on WhatsApp. Shortly after, Barry texted her that he was “headed back.”² That evening, while Barry would later tell investigators the couple had a “wonderful” night together, Suzanne was messaging Libler on LinkedIn: “You’re the only real love I’ve known… the only love I want.”⁶

The daily good morning and good night messages between Suzanne and Libler stopped after that afternoon.⁷ Suzanne was reported missing on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020.

What Suzanne Was Saying About Her Marriage

Court documents unsealed in June 2023 showed that Suzanne was preparing to leave Barry, and that the affair was one part of a bigger story. Investigators recovered messages from the phone of Suzanne’s close friend of 30 years, Sheila Oliver, and from Suzanne’s iCloud account.⁸

To Oliver, Suzanne described Barry as “not stable,” a “Jekyll and Hyde” who would “blow up” over small issues and disappear. She called him “controlling,” “unstable,” and “narcissistic.”⁹ She told Oliver that Barry had once pinned her on their bed and refused to let her up, and that in 2018 he pushed her into a closet, put a gun to his own head, and asked, “Is this what you want?”⁸ Oliver also told investigators that Suzanne said Barry had once hit her in the nose hard enough to make it bleed. Barry later told investigators it was an accidental “clip” and that he had apologized.¹⁰

Suzanne told Oliver she felt trapped. “I’d live in a shack right now… I’m sure he won’t make it easy. He has always wanted control,” she wrote. And: “I just wish he would get fed up with me and let me get out of the marriage.”⁸ According to Oliver, Barry used Suzanne’s medical history — she was a two-time cancer survivor — to press her on how she would pay for things like medical bills if she left.³ She also texted Oliver that she “would not feel safe alone with him” and “I feel no peace when he’s here.”¹ To her sister she was more direct: “He’s also been abusive, emotionally and physically. There’s so much.”⁶

On May 6, 2020, four days before she disappeared, Suzanne sent Barry a message: “I’m done. I could care less what you’re up to and have been for years. We just need to figure this out civilly.” Two days later, Barry replied: “I promise you are wrong about all the crazy thoughts about me. Only a fool would stray from an angel like you. When I’m dead, which won’t be long, you guys will be taken care of.”³

Why the Affair Matters to the Case

The affair sits at the center of the prosecution’s motive theory. The arrest affidavit filed against Barry alleged he “could not control Suzanne’s insistence on leaving him” and “resorted to something he has done his entire life — hunt and control Suzanne like he had hunted and controlled animals.”¹

That hunting reference points to the physical evidence. Barry is a former deer farmer who had access to a wildlife tranquilizer known as BAM — a combination of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine used to sedate large animals for antler removal or transport. He had obtained prescriptions for BAM from an Indiana veterinarian in 2018 and told investigators he last used a dart gun to sedate a deer in his home’s breezeway around the end of April 2020, roughly two weeks before Suzanne disappeared.¹¹¹² Investigators concluded he was the only private citizen in the Salida area with access to BAM between 2017 and 2020.¹³

When Suzanne’s remains were recovered in September 2023 in a shallow grave near Moffat in Saguache County, the autopsy detected all three components of BAM in her bone marrow. The medical examiner ruled her death a “homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication.”¹²

Prosecutors have paired the drug evidence with additional findings inside the Morphew home: a tranquilizer rifle, darts with capped needles in a gun safe, a plastic needle cap in the family’s clothes dryer, and a crack in the master bedroom door frame that prosecutors say came from Barry chasing Suzanne after a dart struck her. Photographs taken three days after she vanished showed scratch marks on Barry’s arm.¹²¹⁴¹

Where the Criminal Case Stands

Barry Morphew was first arrested and charged with first-degree murder in May 2021, but prosecutors moved to dismiss the case in April 2022, two weeks before trial. The presiding judge had excluded 14 of the prosecution’s expert witnesses over discovery violations, and then-District Attorney Linda Stanley said the state could not proceed without that testimony or Suzanne’s body.¹⁴¹⁵ The dismissal was without prejudice, meaning charges could be refiled.

After Suzanne’s remains were found, the case moved to the 12th Judicial District. District Attorney Anne Kelly took the evidence to a grand jury, which returned a new first-degree murder indictment on June 18, 2025.¹⁶ By then Barry was living in a trailer park in Cave Creek, Arizona, under an alias, “Lee Moore.” A gas station clerk knew him as “Lee,” and a bar manager knew him as “Bruce.”¹⁷ Arizona state police arrested him in Goodyear on June 20, 2025, and he was extradited to Colorado.¹⁸

Barry pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on January 12, 2026.¹³ His defense attorneys, David Beller and Jane Fisher-Byrialsen, have indicated they will attack the BAM findings as “junk science,” pointing out that only the El Paso County Coroner’s Office detected the substances, and questioning that lab’s forensic qualifications. The defense continues to maintain that no physical evidence connects Barry to the crime.¹²

Jury selection had been set for October 2026, but Judge Amanda Hopkins vacated that date after the defense cited a “mountain of discovery.” The trial is now expected in the first half of 2027, with the judge instructing both sides to agree on a new date before June 1, 2027.¹⁹
