Suzanne Morphew’s body was found on September 22, 2023, in a shallow grave near Moffat, Colorado, roughly 50 miles south of her home in Chaffee County, more than three years after she vanished on Mother’s Day 2020. Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents came across the remains while searching the area for an unrelated case. Where the Remains Were Located
The grave sat in Saguache County, near the small town of Moffat, well outside the Chaffee County area where Suzanne had last been seen alive at the family’s home near Salida. Suzanne had been reported missing on May 10, 2020. Deputies at the time found her mountain bike on a cliffside near her home and her helmet about a mile away off Highway 50, a scene investigators later concluded had been staged.2CBS News. What Was Recovered at the Grave
Investigators pulled a collection of personal items from the shallow grave alongside the remains. Suzanne was found with mountain biking attire and a “Crested Butte” sweatshirt. A ski mask and a weathered bullet were also recovered.39News. Two details from the grave stood out. Suzanne’s remains had no shoes, and the bones of her feet were missing entirely.39News. What the Autopsy Found
The autopsy report, released publicly in April 2024, ruled Suzanne’s death a homicide. The cause was listed as “unspecified means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication.”6CPR News. A pharmacology expert told the grand jury that BAM would leave a human “wholly immobile, vulnerable and unable to resist any constrictions to the recipient’s ability to breathe.” Veterinarians familiar with the compound estimated that a full dose could be fatal, that a person of Suzanne’s size would be fully sedated in 8 to 12 minutes, and that immobility would last between two and eight hours.7Colorado Sun. Why the BAM Evidence Points to Barry Morphew
Barry Morphew, a former deer farmer in Indiana, had purchased BAM by prescription as recently as March 2018. He admitted using the substance on a deer at his Colorado property in April 2020, one month before Suzanne disappeared. According to the indictment, no other individual or business in the region where the Morphews lived and where the body was found purchased BAM between 2017 and 2020.10ABC News. Barry had earlier acknowledged to investigators that he was experienced with tranquilizer dart guns, having used them illegally to sedate deer and remove their antlers. Signs the Body Was Moved
Investigators concluded that Suzanne’s remains had been relocated at least twice after her death. A team that included a board-certified anthropologist, a botanist, and an entomologist analyzed the grave and determined that “it was unlikely Suzanne decomposed from a fresh body to a skeleton at this location.”8CBS News. How the Discovery Revived the Criminal Case
An earlier prosecution against Barry Morphew had collapsed in April 2022, dismissed without prejudice weeks before trial after the district attorney conceded she could not proceed without her expert witnesses and without a body.12CBS News. On June 18, 2025, a Twelfth Judicial District grand jury returned an indictment charging Barry Morphew with a single count of first-degree murder.13Colorado Bureau of Investigation. By that point Morphew had been living in Cave Creek, Arizona, under a false identity, using the aliases “Lee Moore” and “Bruce,” and had moved in with a woman in May 2025.14Denver 7. Where the Case Stands Now
A $3 million bond was set with the arrest warrant. Defense attorneys asked Chief Judge Amanda Hopkins to reduce it to $500,000 and to allow Morphew to live in Arizona. Prosecutor Anne Kelly opposed the reduction, calling Morphew a flight risk because of his use of aliases, frequent travel, lack of employment, and absence of community ties. Judge Hopkins denied the reduction but modified the bond so it could be posted through a bail bondsman or secured with real estate equity rather than cash only.17Colorado Sun. Morphew was arraigned on January 12, 2026, in Alamosa County, where he pleaded not guilty.10ABC News. The Defense Challenge to the Autopsy
The reliability of the BAM toxicology is shaping up as the central battleground at trial. Defense attorneys David Beller and Jane Fisher-Byrialsen have called the prosecution’s forensic theory “junk science,” arguing that only one laboratory, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, identified the three chemicals in Suzanne’s remains. They contend that lab is certified only for DUI testing and that other consulted labs, including NMS Labs and the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education, have not publicly corroborated the findings.7Colorado Sun.
