Sydney Wilson Shooting: Officer Cleared and Georgetown Backlash

The Sydney Wilson shooting took place on the morning of September 16, 2024, when Fairfax County Police Officer First Class Peter Liu fatally shot the 33-year-old former Georgetown University basketball player during a welfare check at her apartment in Reston, Virginia. Liu fired after Wilson opened her door holding a knife and slashed him across the forehead. Prosecutors declined to bring criminal charges, and the county’s independent police auditor later agreed the use of force was reasonable while urging broader changes to how police respond to mental health calls.1FFX Now. What Happened at the Door

A mental health professional called the Fairfax County Police Department that morning to request a welfare check on Wilson, reporting that she was in an “agitated state.”2Fairfax County Police Department. Officer Involved Shooting in Reston Liu, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Reston Police District and trained in crisis intervention, arrived at the VY Reston Heights complex on the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive at about 10:17 a.m.1FFX Now. Body-worn camera footage released by the department on October 14, 2024, shows Liu knocking and identifying himself. Wilson opened the door briefly, slammed it, and reopened it about two minutes later holding a knife. She immediately lunged at Liu, slashing him across the forehead.3NBC Washington. Why the Officer Was Not Charged

On April 8, 2025, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano announced that his office would not bring charges against Liu, finding he had acted in an “objectively reasonable manner” and that the investigation found “no violations of the criminal law.”5DC News Now. Descano’s report pointed to three facts driving the conclusion: Wilson was armed with a deadly weapon and had already struck Liu with it; Liu was trapped in a dead-end hallway with no further path of retreat; and Wilson disregarded repeated commands to stop. Descano wrote that “the totality of these circumstances” led him to conclude “it was reasonable for Officer Liu to believe that deadly force was immediately necessary to protect himself.”1FFX Now. The Auditor’s Review and the Mental Health Response Question

On January 29, 2026, Fairfax County Independent Police Auditor Richard Schott released his analysis of the department’s investigation. Schott agreed Liu’s use of deadly force was reasonable, noting that Liu had tried to de-escalate and that “non-deadly force options were not viable” once Wilson attacked him.6FFX Now. Schott used the report to press a wider point. He recommended that local governments “must continue to explore ways to increase the use of civilian first responders and reduce the role of police” in mental health situations, writing that police presence on such calls can at times be “detrimental.” He credited Liu’s crisis intervention training with helping during the encounter even so.6FFX Now. Auditor: FCPD Involvement in Mental Health Calls Should Be Reconsidered

Fairfax County runs a co-responder program pairing crisis-trained officers with civilian clinicians from the Community Services Board. As of late 2024, it had only four teams covering the county’s 391 square miles and did not run 24 hours a day. No clinician was available to co-respond on the Wilson call. Police Chief Kevin Davis publicly questioned whether a co-responder would have changed the outcome given how fast the encounter turned violent. The community group Restonstrong, which had been pushing since 2021 for a dedicated mobile mental health crisis unit in Reston, intensified its calls for reform after the shooting.7Connection Newspapers. The Georgetown Tribute and the Backlash

Four days after the shooting, on September 20, 2024, the Georgetown University women’s basketball team posted a tribute on X: “Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). Forever a Hoya.” The post included a photo of Wilson in her university uniform.4New York Post. Georgetown Under Fire for Honoring Sydney Wilson

The platform’s community notes feature flagged the post, stating that Wilson had attempted to stab a police officer before being shot in self-defense.8CBS Austin.
