Adams found the pay gap in February 2015 after the Legislative Report published salary data. She asked for a raise and got no response. Shortly afterward, Adams traveled to Seattle to care for her hospitalized son. The Senate fired her on February 20, 2015, citing “insubordination and abandonment of her job.”2Arizona Mirror. The Federal Case and Two Jury Verdicts

2019 Verdict: $1 Million
After a four-day trial in July 2019, a federal jury unanimously found the Senate had discriminated against Adams on the basis of race and sex in setting her pay and had fired her for complaining about it. Retrial on the Retaliation Claim
The Senate’s lawyers argued Adams could not prove retaliation because she had not formally told Senate leaders her complaint was about discrimination before her firing. 2021 Verdict: $2.75 Million
On November 10, 2021, a second federal jury unanimously found the Senate had fired Adams in retaliation for her pay-discrimination complaints. Katie Hobbs’s Role in the Firing
Hobbs was the Senate Democratic Minority Leader when Adams was fired. Trial testimony established that the termination decision was made jointly by Hobbs, Winkler, and Senate Republican Chief of Staff Wendy Baldo. Hobbs testified she had lost “trust and confidence” in Adams. Hobbs’s Apology and Adams’s Response

On December 8, 2021, Hobbs released a three-minute video in which she said, “I acknowledge the discrimination that Talonya Adams faced as an employee in the Legislature” and admitted that “in proceeding in her termination, I participated in furthering systemic racism.”10Arizona Central. Adams rejected the apology. At a press conference the next day she called it “a response to a political crisis” rather than “a response to racism” and said Hobbs was “unfit to be governor.”12KJZZ. Fallout in the 2022 Governor’s Race
Adams became an active public voice against Hobbs’s candidacy. In November 2021 she called on Hobbs to resign as Secretary of State and drop out of the governor’s race.13Fox 10 Phoenix. On July 6, 2022, Adams appeared at the Arizona Capitol to endorse Democratic gubernatorial candidate Marco Lopez, telling reporters Arizona did not need a leader “who has two jury verdicts convicting her of race discrimination, sex discrimination and retaliation.”14Axios Phoenix.
