Tanya Zuvers: Custody Fight, Disappearance, and Murder Charges

Tanya Zuvers is the mother of Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner Skelton, the three Morenci, Michigan brothers who disappeared on Thanksgiving weekend 2010 after a court-ordered visit with their father, John Skelton. The boys have never been found. In 2025, Zuvers succeeded in having them declared legally dead, and that same year prosecutors charged John Skelton with their murders.

The Marriage and Custody Fight

Zuvers married John Russell Skelton in 2002. They had three sons: Andrew in 2001, Alexander in 2003, and Tanner in 2005. In September 2010, Zuvers filed for divorce after John took Andrew and Alexander to Florida without her permission. She sought custody and asked the court to prevent him from removing the boys again.1The Charley Project. Andrew Ryan Skelton

The divorce turned into a bitter custody fight. John petitioned to terminate Zuvers’ parental rights, citing a 1998 misdemeanor conviction for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a 14-year-old neighbor boy. Zuvers had pleaded guilty at age 32 and was at one time listed on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.1The Charley Project. John Skelton’s Shifting Stories

John offered a series of conflicting accounts. He first told police the boys were with friends, then said he had handed them to a woman named “Joann Taylor” to deliver to their mother. Police found no evidence that Joann Taylor existed.1The Charley Project. Andrew Ryan Skelton

At a December 2010 custody hearing, he claimed he had given the boys to an unnamed “organization,” later calling it the “Underground Sanctuary” and describing it as a clandestine group that hid children from harmful situations. In a 2018 interview, he said he had handed the boys over at 10:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving to two women and a man in his 60s, telling the children they were going to live on a farm along the Ohio-Indiana border.6WDIV ClickOnDetroit.
