Terra Newell is the California woman who, on August 20, 2016, fatally stabbed her mother’s estranged husband, John Meehan, after he ambushed her with a knife in the parking garage of her Newport Beach apartment building. Who John Meehan Was
Meehan was a former nurse anesthetist with a long criminal record. He graduated from the Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia in 1998, lost his career after stealing anesthetics from hospital patients, and in 2002 pleaded guilty to felony drug theft and served 17 months in a Michigan prison. In 2013, he was arrested for stalking a Laguna Beach woman he had approached by posing as her anesthesiologist. A search of his storage unit turned up a Colt .38 revolver, which he was barred from owning as a felon, along with a bottle of cyanide powder and eight capsules. He pleaded guilty in February 2014 to stalking and felony firearm possession. Debra, an interior designer, met Meehan in October 2014 through an over-50s dating site and married him in Las Vegas that December. Terra and her sister Jacquelyn were suspicious from the start. After the family hired a private investigator and discovered Meehan’s record, Debra eventually moved out in March 2015, briefly reconciled, and then ended the relationship for good in March 2016, filing for annulment the following month. The Parking-Garage Attack
On August 20, 2016, Meehan grabbed Terra by the waist in the parking garage of her apartment building and said, “Do you remember me?” He then began stabbing her with a knife he had hidden inside a Del Taco bag. She thought at first she was being punched, and sustained an inch-deep wound to her arm and injuries near her rib cage before she understood a knife was involved.5ABC News. Terra fell onto her back and started kicking. Her dog bit at Meehan’s ankles. She managed to kick the knife loose, picked it up, and turned it on him. She later said she drew on her favorite show, “The Walking Dead,” describing how she held his head and stabbed him in the forehead and through the eye, reasoning she needed to stop him the way a character would stop a zombie.5ABC News. Meehan was near death when paramedics arrived and never regained consciousness at the Santa Ana hospital where he was taken. His sister Karen, a nurse, reviewed his brain scans and authorized removal of life support. He was declared dead on August 24, 2016, at age 57. Why She Wasn’t Charged
Investigators treated the killing as a straightforward case of self-defense, and prosecutors never filed charges. Meehan had arrived with what investigators described as a “kidnap kit”: an Oakley backpack containing camouflage duct tape, cable ties, and a set of kitchen knives. Under California law, a homicide is justifiable when committed in self-defense against someone who intends to commit a felony or inflict great bodily injury, provided the defender reasonably believes they face imminent danger and uses no more force than is reasonably necessary. The “Dirty John” Reporting and Bravo Series
The case reached a national audience after Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard published a six-part investigative series titled “Dirty John” on October 1, 2017. His reporting drew on interviews with Debra, Jacquelyn, and Terra Newell, along with investigators, attorneys, and thousands of pages of court documents, police reports, and prison records. What Terra Newell Does Now
Since the attack, Newell has built a career as a survivor advocate focused on domestic violence, coercive control, and trauma recovery. She founded and runs Terra’s Safe Haven, a nonprofit dedicated to long-term healing for people affected by coercive control and intimate-partner violence, offering education, resources, and community support.11Serendipity Literary Agency. She co-hosts “The Survivor Squad” podcast with Collier Landry, himself a survivor of family violence. The show profiles people who have lived through traumatic events and focuses on rebuilding afterward. Guests have included Amanda Knox and Rita Isbell, the sister of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims.12The Guardian. The Billy Jensen Allegations
In 2022, Newell came forward as one of several women accusing true-crime podcast host Billy Jensen of inappropriate conduct. According to a Rolling Stone investigation, she said Jensen acted aggressively toward her on two occasions in 2019 after she appeared on his podcast, “The First Degree,” describing him grabbing her neck and thigh at an August 2019 gathering in Los Angeles and touching her inappropriately at a true-crime event two months later. Jensen characterized the interactions as mutual flirtation and said he had apologized to Newell for “over-the-top comments.” Newell cut ties with him in June 2022 after learning of additional misconduct allegations from other women.
