Terra Newell is the Southern California woman who, at 25, killed her mother’s estranged husband, John Meehan, in self-defense during a knife attack in a Newport Beach parking garage on August 20, 2016. Orange County prosecutors ruled the killing justified and never filed charges. Her story reached a national audience through the Los Angeles Times investigative series and podcast “Dirty John,” and she has since built a career as a trauma coach, speaker, and nonprofit founder working with survivors of coercive control.
The Parking Garage Attack
Terra was returning to her apartment at the Coronado Apartments on Sherington Place in Newport Beach around 5:25 p.m. when Meehan ambushed her in the parking structure.1Orange County Register. Meehan began stabbing her, though she first thought she was being punched because the knife was hidden inside a Del Taco bag. She bit his hand, tried to break away, and fell onto her back. From the ground she pedal-kicked at his forearms while her dog went after his ankles. During the struggle she kicked the knife loose and picked it up.2ABC News. What happened next became the detail most people remember from the case. Terra later said she held Meehan’s head to keep him from biting her, something she did instinctively because of the show “The Walking Dead.” She stabbed him repeatedly, including in the forehead and finally in the eye, which she described as “the softest point of entry” to “kill his brain for like a zombie, essentially.”2ABC News. Why Terra Newell Was Not Charged
The Newport Beach Police Department investigated and brought its findings to Orange County prosecutor Matt Murphy, who called it “a clear-cut case of self-defense.” No charges were filed.4Los Angeles Times. Dirty John – Terra
Under California law, a person is justified in using deadly force when they reasonably believe they are in imminent danger of being killed or suffering great bodily injury, and when deadly force is necessary to defend against that danger. California imposes no duty to retreat; a person may stand their ground and even pursue an attacker until the threat has passed. The prosecution bears the burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that a killing was not justified.5Justia. CALCRIM No. 505 – Justifiable Homicide: Self-Defense or Defense of Another Meehan started the attack with a knife, had a documented history of violence against women, and kept going until Terra disarmed him. Prosecutors concluded the elements of self-defense were plainly met.
Murphy attributed Terra’s survival to adrenaline, Meehan’s drug-weakened physical condition, and what he called her “instinctive refusal to comply with his script.” He noted the outcome almost never favors the victim. “Ninety-nine times out of 100, the nice person is the one that is dead,” Murphy said. “Every once in a while, good guys win.”6Los Angeles Times. Who John Meehan Was
Meehan met Terra’s mother, Debra Newell, an Orange County interior designer, on an over-50 dating website in 2014, two days after his release from jail. He told her he was an anesthesiologist recently back from volunteering with Doctors Without Borders in Iraq. Nearly every detail he shared was a lie.3People. Debra’s four adult children, including Terra, were suspicious from the start. A private investigator they hired uncovered a long record. Meehan was a former nurse anesthetist who had served time for stealing surgical drugs from hospitals in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky and had been permanently barred from nursing in those states by 2003.8Dayton Daily News.
