The Duggar Case: Convictions, Florida Charges, and Cancellations

Two Duggar brothers are the subject of active criminal cases. Josh Duggar, the eldest son from TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, is serving 151 months in federal prison for receiving child sexual abuse material, with his direct appeal and a post-conviction motion both denied. His younger brother Joseph was arrested in March 2026 on Florida child molestation charges carrying a potential life sentence, and he and his wife Kendra separately face child endangerment and false imprisonment charges in Arkansas. The Duggar family criminal cases now span federal court in Arkansas, state court in Florida, and Arkansas state court, with Josh incarcerated and Joseph out on bond awaiting trial.

Josh Duggar’s Federal Child Pornography Conviction

Federal agents identified Josh Duggar through an undercover investigation into an online file-sharing program. Homeland Security Investigations, the Arkansas Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, and the Justice Department’s High Technology Investigative Unit traced hundreds of child sexual abuse images to an IP address at Wholesale Motorcars, a used car lot Duggar owned in Springdale, Arkansas.¹

When investigators searched the dealership in November 2019 and seized the desktop computer, forensic analysts found a password-protected Linux partition running an encrypted Tor browser, set up to bypass the accountability software installed on the public-facing side of the machine. The password matched ones Duggar had used on his personal devices for years.²¹³

Duggar was charged in the Western District of Arkansas, case number 5:21-CR-50014, with two counts of receiving and possessing material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.⁴⁵⁶

On December 9, 2021, a jury of six men and six women found Duggar guilty. Judge Brooks acquitted him on a distribution charge and dropped one of the original counts.³

Sentence and Supervised Release Conditions

On May 25, 2022, Judge Brooks sentenced Duggar to 151 months in federal prison, roughly twelve and a half years, with no possibility of parole and twenty years of supervised release. He was ordered to pay $50,100 in fines and special assessments and to register as a sex offender.⁴¹

The supervised release conditions are unusually broad. Duggar cannot have unsupervised contact with minors, including his own seven children, unless supervised by his wife, his parents, or another court-approved adult. He cannot possess an internet-capable or photo-storage device without advance approval from the U.S. Probation Office, and any approved device must carry monitoring software he pays for. He is barred from viewing pornography of any kind, must participate in sex-offense-specific treatment, must submit to periodic polygraphs, and cannot possess firearms.⁷

Appeals, Post-Conviction Motion, and Current Custody

Duggar appealed to the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing the trial court wrongly excluded the former employee’s sex-offense history, wrongly admitted statements he made to agents at the car lot, and improperly limited his defense expert. In August 2023, a three-judge panel affirmed the conviction, finding Duggar had been told he was free to leave during questioning and that the defense expert’s alternative theories were “pure conjecture.”⁶ In June 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case without comment or noted dissent.⁸

Duggar then filed a motion to vacate under 28 U.S.C. § 2255, alleging a prosecution witness manipulated forensic data and lied at trial.⁹¹⁰¹¹

Duggar was originally housed at FCI Seagoville in Texas. On May 29, 2026, the Bureau of Prisons transferred him to the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, an administrative-security facility offering medical and mental health services. The Bureau did not explain the transfer, citing security concerns, and Duggar’s attorney, Beau Brindley, said he was working to verify his client’s condition and had not known him to be sick. Duggar’s projected release date is in early 2033.¹²

Josh Duggar’s Teenage Molestation History

The 2021 conviction was not the first allegation of sexual misconduct against Josh Duggar. In May 2015, In Touch Weekly published a police report showing Duggar had been investigated as a teenager for fondling five underage girls, four of them his sisters. The conduct occurred between roughly 2002 and 2003, when Duggar was fourteen and fifteen; the victims ranged from five to eleven years old.¹³

According to the report, Duggar confessed to his father, Jim Bob, shortly after turning fourteen. Jim Bob did not report the abuse for about a year, during which at least six more incidents occurred, and the family eventually placed Josh in a treatment program in March 2002.¹⁴ Authorities only learned of the abuse in December 2006, when Arkansas Department of Human Services received two tips, one of them from a producer at Harpo Studios ahead of a scheduled Oprah Winfrey Show appearance.¹³

Josh Duggar was never criminally charged for the teenage conduct, and the statute of limitations had expired on any charges Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar might have faced for permitting abuse of a minor.¹⁴ Family friend Bobye Holt was later permitted to testify at the federal trial about Duggar’s confessions to those earlier acts, offered as evidence of motive.⁵

Joseph Duggar’s Florida Molestation Case

Joseph Garrett Duggar, 31, was arrested in Tontitown, Arkansas, on March 18, 2026, on charges arising from a 2020 family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida. A fourteen-year-old girl told a forensic interviewer that Duggar had molested her several times when she was nine years old, describing incidents in which he had her sit on his lap or next to him on a couch, covered her with a blanket, manipulated her underwear, and touched her genitals and thighs. She said the conduct stopped after Duggar apologized.¹⁵

On March 17, 2026, the day before the arrest, the victim’s father confronted Duggar. According to the arrest affidavit, Duggar admitted the abuse during that confrontation and admitted it again when Tontitown detectives interviewed him.¹⁶ He was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation on a child under twelve and lewd and lascivious behavior by a person eighteen or older, both classified as life felonies under Florida law.¹⁷

Duggar waived extradition and was transferred to the Bay County Jail in Panama City. Bay County Circuit Judge Brantley Clark set bond at $600,000 and barred him from unsupervised contact with anyone under eighteen. Duggar posted bond on March 31, 2026, pleaded not guilty, and returned to Arkansas.¹⁵

Defense attorney Al Sauline has described Duggar as “nervous, anxious and worried” and has maintained the not-guilty plea.¹⁸ On June 16, 2026, Judge Clark denied two defense motions: one asking for unsupervised contact with Duggar’s four biological children, and one asking for access to rental properties Duggar owns within 500 feet of an address listed for the victim’s family. The judge ruled Duggar could send an employee or agent to handle maintenance at those properties.¹⁹ No trial date has been set. A pretrial hearing was scheduled for July 14, 2026.²⁰

Arkansas Child Endangerment Charges Against Joseph and Kendra Duggar

A home inspection prompted by the Florida arrest turned up locks on the outside of the Duggar children’s bedroom doors. Both Joseph and his wife Kendra were charged with four counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.²¹ Kendra was arrested by Tontitown police on March 20, 2026, and released on $1,470 bond.¹⁹

An attorney entered not-guilty pleas for both on April 28, 2026, and the couple has a court date set for August 10, 2026. If convicted, Kendra could face up to eight years in prison.¹⁹²¹

Television Cancellations and Family Response

TLC cancelled 19 Kids and Counting on July 16, 2015, after the police report on Josh Duggar’s teenage abuse became public. Josh issued a public apology calling his actions “inexcusable,” and reports that same summer disclosed active accounts he had maintained on Ashley Madison, prompting his admission of a pornography addiction and infidelity.²² The spinoff Counting On, focused on other family members, ran for eleven seasons and was cancelled on June 29, 2021, shortly after Josh’s federal arrest.²³

Joseph Duggar’s 2026 arrest drew unusually sharp reactions from inside the family. Cousin Amy Duggar King said she was “sickened, heartbroken and deeply angry” and described the family as operating under a “toxic system” that “breeds secrecy.” She said she was “not surprised that another alleged predator has emerged from this toxic system.” Jill Duggar Dillard and her husband posted a statement “strongly condemning abuse” and voicing support for the victim.²⁴

Josh Duggar’s wife, Anna, has not filed for divorce or separation. Before sentencing, she wrote to Judge Brooks describing her husband as a “loving, supportive and caring father” and asking the court to “consider reuniting us as a family again soon.”²⁵
