The Knight-Martin Television Settlement: Allegations and Fallout

In January 1997, actress Tisha Campbell filed a lawsuit against her Martin co-star Martin Lawrence alleging sexual harassment, sexual battery, verbal abuse, and threats during production of the Fox sitcom. The Tisha Campbell and Martin Lawrence lawsuit was settled confidentially in April 1997, with Campbell agreeing to return to finish the series on the condition that she and Lawrence never appear on set together again.¹

What Campbell Alleged

Campbell walked off the set in November 1996, mid-way through the show’s fifth season, telling associates the atmosphere had become “too tense, volatile and unpredictable” and Lawrence’s behavior “intolerable.”² Her formal filing in January 1997 described what she called an “obsessive campaign of physical and emotional abuse.”

The specific allegations included:

Sexual misconduct on set: Campbell alleged Lawrence groped her, forced his tongue into her mouth, and simulated intercourse in front of cast and crew when cameras were not rolling.
Verbal abuse and rage: she described Lawrence as “manic and volatile,” alleging “uncontrollable fits of rage” and humiliation in front of colleagues that she said left her hospitalized from stress.
Physical threats: Campbell cited a November 22, 1996 incident in which Lawrence had a “hysterical outburst,” physically confronted another cast member, and directed his rage at her.

The lawsuit also noted Campbell had previously asked the show’s writers to stop scripting scenes that required her and Lawrence to be in bed together.³

How the Case Reached Court

Campbell’s lawsuit was actually a counterclaim. After she left the set, HBO Independent Productions, which produced Martin, sued to force her back to work. In December 1996 the company asked for a temporary restraining order that would have compelled her return while the dispute went to arbitration through the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins denied the request.² Campbell then filed her own claims.

Her suit named Lawrence along with HBO executives Chris Albrecht and Christopher Schwartz, alleging both had “long-standing knowledge about Lawrence’s treatment of Campbell but failed to do anything about it.”⁴

Lawrence and HBO’s Response

Lawrence denied every allegation. In a January 1997 statement he described himself as Campbell’s “champion and protector.”⁵ His representatives suggested the lawsuit was a “pawn in a contract dispute,” a framing Campbell’s attorney rejected.³ HBO said it had “responded to Tisha Campbell’s concerns as soon as we heard about them.”

The Settlement

The case resolved in April 1997. A joint statement said only that “all parties have resolved their differences” and that “all other details are confidential.”¹ Campbell has since confirmed that a confidentiality agreement and gag order prevent her from discussing the terms.⁶

One term became public: Campbell would return to finish the series, but she and Lawrence would never be on set at the same time. Their scenes for the two-part finale were filmed separately.⁷ Contemporary reporting described Campbell as having “withdrawn her accusations” as part of the resolution.⁸

What It Did to the Show

Campbell’s last on-air appearance before her walkout was December 19, 1996. Two episodes were filmed without her, with writers explaining Gina’s absence through a storyline about a “romantic voyage” the character “misses the boat” on.² After the settlement, her character returned for episodes airing in May 1997, and the series finale aired May 1, 1997.

Whether the lawsuit ended the show is not clear-cut. Lawrence publicly said he was leaving to focus on his film career, citing Bad Boys.⁸ Variety reported the show was “not a sure bet to return” regardless, with ratings at a 5.3/9 household share, its lowest in more than two years.⁹ Fox Entertainment President Peter Roth said at the time that “whatever is happening off the set is not affecting the show.”⁵ The practical result, though, was that the show’s two leads could no longer share the screen.

Where Things Stand Now

Neither party said much publicly for more than twenty years. Then in a 2020 GQ interview, Lawrence addressed the allegations directly: “None of that was true. It was all a lot of bullshit.” Pressed to clarify, he said, “Just whoever’s side it was, it was bullshit,” and added, “I love Tisha. I’ve seen her then and now, now and then, always with nothing but love.”¹⁰

In June 2022 the cast reunited for Martin: The Reunion on BET+. The special did not address the lawsuit on camera. Campbell told CBS Mornings: “We worked really hard to reconnect, to forgive, and this reunion is about a celebration of everything that we did, everything that we accomplished, and our growth as human beings.”¹¹

In March 2026, Campbell reaffirmed her stance: “I will protect him till the day I die. Never have I ever said a bad, unkind thing about the show, about Martin Lawrence, and I never will.”¹² She attributed her silence partly to the confidentiality agreement and partly to personal choice, saying Lawrence “needs protection.” Cast member Carl Payne has acknowledged the “family drama” was real but said the group has moved on.¹³
