Thomas Rousseau: Patriot Front, Boston Judgment, Idaho Arrest

Thomas Rousseau is the founder and leader of Patriot Front, a Texas-based white supremacist organization he built in 2017 out of the wreckage of the neo-Nazi group Vanguard America. Born in 1998 and raised in the Dallas suburbs, Rousseau was 19 when he took over Vanguard America’s digital infrastructure, broke away, and rebranded the group under an American patriotic aesthetic. He still runs it. As of 2026, internal documents show Patriot Front claims more than 540 members across 49 states, and Rousseau personally carries a $2.76 million civil judgment from a racist attack his members carried out in Boston.1USA Today. From Vanguard America to Patriot Front

Rousseau came up through Vanguard America, a neo-Nazi group formed in 2016. He rose fast, taking over the Texas chapter and becoming the group’s “Vice Commander.” The FBI had him on its radar as early as May 2017, while he was still a student at Coppell High School distributing propaganda posters in his hometown.3Stanford Mapping Militants Project. That summer he clashed with Vanguard America’s national leader, Dillon Irizarry, who used the name Dillon Hopper. After a June 2017 rally in Austin, Hopper accused Rousseau of misrepresenting himself as the group’s overall leader. On June 20, 2017, Rousseau locked Hopper out of every one of Vanguard America’s Discord servers. Hopper called it a “literal coup.”3Stanford Mapping Militants Project. Weeks later, Rousseau led several dozen Vanguard America members at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville on August 12, 2017. James Alex Fields Jr., photographed alongside Vanguard America members and carrying a shield with the group’s emblem, drove his car into counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring more than 30 others.4ADL. Eighteen days after Charlottesville, on August 30, 2017, Rousseau rebranded the group’s website as Patriot Front. In a Discord announcement, he described the change as “aesthetic, not ideological.”3Stanford Mapping Militants Project. Patriot Front Group Profile5ADL. Patriot Front6GWU Program on Extremism. How Rousseau Runs the Group

Rousseau operates as Patriot Front’s sole decision-maker. He avoids formal titles, once suggesting “general director” if one were required. The organization is broken into regional networks, each managed by a director who reports directly to him, and every slogan, logo, and piece of imagery must be personally approved.7ProPublica. Membership carries obligations. Members must post fliers and stickers weekly and submit photo proof, and they are required to attend demonstrations or face expulsion. They buy propaganda materials and uniforms from the organization, and Rousseau has acknowledged in leaked chats that some of that revenue covers his personal living expenses.5ADL. The group’s signature tactic is the flash demonstration: masked members in matching khaki pants, blue shirts, and white face coverings are transported to a location in rented moving trucks, stage a brief march, and leave before counter-protesters or police can respond.5ADL. Patriot Front

Two major leaks have exposed the private side of the operation. In January 2022, the media collective Unicorn Riot published more than 400 gigabytes of internal documents and roughly 17 hours of audio recordings. Members routinely used racial slurs, praised Adolf Hitler, and joked about the Holocaust. The chats also showed Rousseau coordinating nationwide vandalism of murals and monuments honoring Black Americans and LGBTQ+ communities, and directing members to use fake social media accounts to pose as sympathetic bystanders after marches.9Unicorn Riot. A second leak, obtained by USA Today and published in June 2026, showed the group at more than 540 members across every state except Hawaii, with the largest concentrations in Texas (78), Florida (36), and Utah (35). The newer documents detailed corporate-style compliance manuals and a network of at least 23 mixed martial arts “active clubs” operating across 32 states for fitness training and recruitment. Rousseau set an internal goal of 600 members by July 4, 2026.1USA Today. Exclusive Patriot Front Leaked Documents

According to the Anti-Defamation League, Patriot Front accounted for roughly 60 percent of recorded white supremacist propaganda incidents in the United States in 2023 and remained the leading distributor in 2024.11ADL. White Supremacist Propaganda Focused on Jews and Immigrants 2024

The $2.76 Million Boston Judgment

On July 2, 2022, Patriot Front members marching through Boston attacked Charles Murrell III, a 37-year-old Black saxophonist, pinning him against a light post and pushing him toward traffic. Murrell filed a federal lawsuit in August 2023 against Patriot Front, Rousseau, and unnamed members, alleging conspiracy to violate his civil rights under the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 and the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act.2WBUR. Rousseau never appeared in court or responded to the suit. On January 13, 2025, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani entered a default judgment and awarded Murrell $2.76 million, including $2 million in punitive damages. The court found the attack was intended to promote the view that non-white people should be subordinated to white people, and that it caused Murrell ongoing physical and psychological harm affecting his ability to work.12WGBH. The Richmond Arthur Ashe Mural Case

In October 2021, Patriot Front members defaced a mural of tennis legend Arthur Ashe in the historically Black Battery Park neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law filed a civil rights lawsuit in 2022 on behalf of neighborhood residents, naming Patriot Front, Rousseau, and individual members. The suit alleged conspiracy to violate civil rights under the Ku Klux Klan Act and intimidation under Virginia state law.13Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The court found the defendants liable on all counts, concluding that “racial animus against Black individuals and their supporters animated Defendants’ conduct,” and ordered payment of more than $470,000. Five individual members settled separately on confidential terms. The suit remained active against Rousseau and the organization itself as of late 2024.13Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The Idaho Arrest and Why the Charge Against Him Was Dismissed

On June 11, 2022, police in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, arrested Rousseau and 30 other Patriot Front members after a 911 caller reported roughly 20 people loading into a U-Haul dressed like a “little army.” Officers found the men equipped with metal shields, shin guards, at least one smoke grenade, and documents that police described as an operational plan to disrupt the city’s “Pride in the Park” event. All 31 came from out of state.15CNN. Idaho Patriot Front Arrests What We Know16NPR. Patriot Front White Supremacist Arrested Near Idaho Pride

Local prosecutors charged the group with misdemeanor conspiracy to riot. The cases split apart:

The prosecution was hampered from the start. Police transferred 37 seized electronic devices to the FBI before a federal warrant was signed, creating chain-of-custody disputes that made evidence inaccessible to the defense. Understaffing in the prosecutor’s office and scheduling conflicts across nine different judges compounded the delays.17Idaho Capital Sun. Where Things Stand Now

Rousseau, 27, remains based in Texas and continues to direct Patriot Front personally. No criminal charges are currently pending against him. Patriot Front has not been designated as a terrorist organization by any national government or international body, and the FBI has stated that it cannot open investigations “based solely on protected First Amendment activity.”3Stanford Mapping Militants Project. His legal exposure is civil. The $2.76 million Boston default judgment stands, and the Richmond suit against him and the organization remains active. The group he built keeps marching: roughly 60 members in New York City in January 2024, about 90 in Charleston, West Virginia, in April 2024, participation in the January 2026 March for Life in Washington, D.C., and a demonstration by more than a dozen members in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in May 2026.5ADL.
