Tim Kennedy Stolen Valor: Apology, Investigation, and Fallout

Retired UFC fighter and Army Green Beret Tim Kennedy admitted in July 2025 that he had lied for years about receiving the Bronze Star with Valor, a claim at the center of the Tim Kennedy stolen valor controversy. He did receive a Bronze Star in 2006, but it was for meritorious service, not combat bravery. The Maryland National Guard opened an investigation, his personal website came down, and a longer Texas Monthly investigation then documented other biographical claims that do not match the records.

What Kennedy Actually Said

On a July 2017 episode of “The American Warrior Show,” Kennedy was asked directly whether he had earned a Bronze Star for Valor. He said yes, and offered a short combat story to back it up: “There was a bad guy, and the bad guy was shooting at us, and I shot him. I wish there was, like, this great heroic story; I just did what I was supposed to do like everybody else around me.”1Military.com. The clip resurfaced in 2025 after retired Green Beret Nathan Cornacchia, who runs the YouTube channel Valhalla VFT, posted it alongside evidence that no such valor award appeared in Kennedy’s public records.2MMA Fighting. What He Actually Earned

Kennedy’s real Bronze Star citation, from 2006, credits his “unmatched competence and sound judgement” in planning combat operations in Iraq.4Business Insider. His verified record is still substantial. Kennedy holds the rank of Master Sergeant and serves part-time with Special Operations Detachment-O, a Maryland National Guard unit based outside Baltimore. He earned his Green Beret in 2005, graduated from Ranger School in 2007 as a top graduate, and deployed once each to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Apology

Kennedy posted an apology to Instagram on July 7, 2025. “I want to take full and unequivocal responsibility for a serious mistake,” he wrote, acknowledging that he had “implied directly or indirectly” that he received the Bronze Star with Valor. “That is not true, and there is no excuse for it. I never received that honor, and I deeply regret ever suggesting otherwise.”3Yahoo Sports. Kennedy first tried to pin the discrepancy on third parties, including a speaking-engagement booking service, before reversing course once the 2017 interview clip made that explanation untenable. In the clip, he had personally and explicitly confirmed the valor claim.5MMA Mania. Former UFC Fighter Tim Kennedy Admits to Lying About Military Award

Not everyone accepted the apology. Retired Green Beret Alex Theodosis called it a “ChatGPT crafted non-apology” and said Kennedy’s “web of lies” had been “intentional” and made “with the purpose of fame and money” since 2007, pointing out that Kennedy had multiple chances to correct the record and instead “very intentionally lied about not only having the award but continued the lie with a made up story to reinforce your lie.”2MMA Fighting. The Maryland National Guard Investigation

The Maryland National Guard opened an investigation after Kennedy’s admission. “The Maryland National Guard takes these matters seriously,” spokesperson Maj. Benjamin Hughes said. “Integrity is a core value of our organization, so an investigation is currently underway to review the facts surrounding these public misstatements.”4Business Insider. As of mid-July 2025, the consequences Kennedy might face were still unclear. Authority to revoke his Special Forces tab rests with the Army’s Special Operations Command, and neither that command nor any other entity had announced plans to do so.1Military.com. Why Federal Charges Are Unlikely

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it a federal crime to fraudulently claim certain military decorations, but only when the person acts “with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit.”7GovInfo. 18 U.S.C. § 704 – Military Medals or Decorations The statute lists the Medal of Honor, distinguished-service crosses, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and combat badges such as the Combat Infantryman Badge.8Congress.gov. Stolen Valor Act of 2013, Public Law 113-12 The Bronze Star is not explicitly listed, and proving the intent element would present an additional hurdle to any federal prosecution. Kennedy’s situation is more likely to be handled through military administrative channels than through criminal charges.

Other Claims That Didn’t Hold Up

The valor claim was not a one-off. An October 2025 investigation by Texas Monthly reporter Michael Sierra-Arévalo documented a pattern of exaggerations across Kennedy’s biography.9Texas Monthly. The Green Beret Who Couldn’t Shoot Straight

  • In his 2022 memoir Scars and Stripes, Kennedy wrote that he graduated from the Allan Hancock College police academy as the “Honor Graduate” with the highest marks physically, academically, and tactically. The college confirmed he completed the program in 2000 but has no record of him being honor graduate. His only award was for physical fitness.9Texas Monthly. • Kennedy has said he graduated high school at 15 or 16, but booking sites and other records link his graduation to 1998, when he was at least 18. He has also described himself as a college junior at 17, yet Cuesta College records show he received two associate’s degrees in May 2000 at age 20.9Texas Monthly. • In 2016 he claimed a “graduate degree in psychology” from Columbia College. The school has no record of him enrolling in any graduate program. When pressed, he revised the claim to “post-undergraduate classes.”9Texas Monthly. The Green Beret Who Couldn’t Shoot Straight
  • On a 2022 podcast, Kennedy said he returned to law enforcement after his Army service. Sierra-Arévalo put it this way: “If you look past the broadest strokes of Kennedy’s résumé to confirm the details of what he says and writes about his life, much of it proves elusive, or just plain wrong. Timelines misalign. Credentials blur. Contradictions and inaccuracies abound.”9Texas Monthly. The Green Beret Who Couldn’t Shoot Straight

The Fallout

Kennedy’s personal website, timkennedy.com, was taken down after the scandal broke. According to Cornacchia, the removal followed not only the valor controversy but also allegations that Kennedy had continued listing Black Rifle Coffee Company as a sponsor long after the company cut ties with him in December 2024. Cornacchia said BRCC’s legal team spent weeks demanding Kennedy remove the branding before the site was ultimately deleted.6Guns America. Tim Kennedy’s Website Vanishes Amid Stolen Valor Fallout

The scandal also strained a visible relationship with Army leadership. Kennedy had become a frequent Fox News presence in uniform, including during the Army’s 250th birthday celebrations in June 2025, and his reenlistment was personally conducted by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George. Multiple Pentagon officials had already described Kennedy’s role as a “liability” over what they called his “overt Republican partisanship and exaggerated record.” One military official told Military.com: “Everyone thought this was a terrible idea.”3Yahoo Sports.
