Toyota Camry Mold Lawsuit: California Settlement and Florida Verdict

The Toyota Camry mold lawsuit ended in two very different outcomes. In California, a class action covering roughly 200,000 owners and lessees of 2012–2015 Camry XV50 vehicles reached a settlement that received final court approval on January 8, 2025, providing reimbursement for charcoal filter replacements and evaporator flushes.¹ A separate Florida class action went to a jury trial in March 2023 and ended in a verdict for Toyota.² All claim deadlines under the California settlement have now passed, with the last falling on May 31, 2026 for 2014–2015 owners with post-May 2024 expenses.

What the Lawsuits Claimed

Plaintiffs alleged that the HVAC system in certain Camry models let condensation collect in parts of the air conditioning unit, creating conditions for mold, fungus, and bacteria to grow and then be blown into the passenger cabin as a foul smell.³ The Florida plaintiffs described the flaw as trapping moisture in “hidden parts” of the A/C system.²

Toyota denied that any design or manufacturing defect exists. The company said the potential for HVAC odor is “inherent in the product itself” and that the vehicles performed as promised.⁴

The California Settlement

The California class covered owners and lessees of 2012–2015 Toyota Camry XV50 vehicles who purchased or leased in California, roughly 200,000 people.⁵ The parties reached agreement in March 2024. Instead of a fixed cash pool split among class members, the settlement reimbursed specific out-of-pocket HVAC expenses:

For expenses incurred on or before May 31, 2024: reimbursement for the cost to replace and install a charcoal filter and/or flush the vehicle’s evaporator.⁶
For expenses incurred after May 31, 2024: reimbursement of up to $100 for the cost to replace and install a charcoal filter.⁶

The court held a fairness hearing on October 30, 2024, and no objections were filed. Final approval came on January 8, 2025.¹

The settlement is now closed to new claims. The final deadline, which applied to 2014–2015 model year owners with expenses incurred after May 31, 2024, was May 31, 2026.¹

The Florida Trial Verdict

The Florida case, Cardenas v. Toyota Motor Corp., was filed in July 2018 in the Southern District of Florida on behalf of buyers of 2012–2014 Camry vehicles sold in Florida.⁷ The court certified a class of nearly 91,000 buyers under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.⁸

Rather than settling, Toyota took the case to trial. In March 2023, a Miami jury sided with the company. Experts at trial were unable to prove that any of the named plaintiffs’ vehicles contained excess moisture or microbial growth, and in the case of lead plaintiff Javier Cardenas, experts detected neither an odor nor excess moisture in his car’s HVAC system.²

What Toyota Tells Dealers About the Odor

Because the settlement window has closed, the practical question for a current Camry owner with an HVAC smell is what maintenance Toyota itself recommends. The company’s history of technical service bulletins on this issue goes back years. A 1997 bulletin (AC002-97) acknowledged that evaporator drain blockages and microbial growth from dampness could produce smells across Toyota vehicles. A 2009 bulletin (T-SB-0261-09) introduced a redesigned evaporator assembly for the Camry and Prius under standard warranty.⁹

A 2013 bulletin (T-SB-0142-13, updated in 2015) told dealers the odors were “naturally occurring” and that there was “no way to eliminate” them, directing dealers back to earlier service procedures.⁹ Toyota’s most recent guidance, T-SB-0010-20 from February 2020, recommends annual replacement of the HVAC filter with a high-performance charcoal filter and periodic evaporator cleaning with a Toyota-branded A/C refresher kit. The bulletin states the procedures are intended only to “reduce intensity” of the odor and is expressly “Not Applicable to Warranty.”¹⁰

Other Vehicles and Related Cases

The California settlement applied only to 2012–2015 Camry XV50 vehicles purchased or leased in California, and the Florida verdict resolved claims for 2012–2014 Camrys sold in Florida. Other Toyota models have been through separate proceedings. HVAC odor claims brought by Prius owners in California were dismissed by a federal judge in December 2021 on statute-of-limitations grounds. A broader 2021 settlement resolved odor claims for Toyota and Lexus vehicles built between 2006 and 2014, including the 4Runner, Venza, Sequoia, Highlander, Prius, Avalon, and Sienna.⁴

Mercedes-Benz faced a nationwide class action over nearly identical HVAC drainage and mold allegations, which resulted in a court-approved settlement in September 2020 offering reimbursement for past repairs and future coverage on a sliding scale.¹¹ In Canada, Consumer Law Group has been investigating a wider range of vehicles, including 2012–2017 Camry and Camry Hybrid models and 2013–2017 Lexus ES vehicles, though the matter has not progressed to a filed lawsuit.¹²
