Trader Joe’s $7.4M Settlement: Eligibility, Claims, and Payouts

If you paid with a credit or debit card at Trader Joe’s between March 5 and July 19, 2019, you may be eligible for a share of the Trader Joe’s $7.4 million settlement, with an estimated payment of about $102.45 per claimant. Claims must be submitted by June 9, 2026.¹

Who Qualifies for a Payment

The class covers anyone who used a credit or debit card at a Trader Joe’s store between March 5 and July 19, 2019 and received a receipt that displayed the first six and last four digits of the card number.¹ Not every shopper in that window is included. Trader Joe’s has said only some stores printed noncompliant receipts, and even at those locations only a small share of transactions produced them.²

Affected customers have been sent notices by email or postcard containing a unique Claim ID. If you’re not sure whether you’re on the list, you can check your status on the official settlement website.²

How to File a Claim

File online at tj-factasettlement.com, or mail a claim form to: Keim v. Trader Joe’s Settlement Administrator, P.O. Box 301134, Los Angeles, CA 90030-1134. Questions can go to the toll-free hotline at 1-888-444-7415.¹

June 9, 2026 is the deadline for everything: filing a claim, opting out, or filing an objection.³ A final fairness hearing is set for August 10, 2026, when the judge will decide whether to grant final approval.² Payments are not issued until after that hearing.

How Much You Can Expect

The plaintiff estimates each valid claim will pay about $102.45, though the amount can move up or down depending on how many people file.⁴ The $7.4 million fund is reduced first by several fixed costs before the balance is split evenly among claimants:

Attorney fees of up to roughly $2.47 million, or one-third of the fund.⁵
Up to $65,000 in litigation expenses.⁶
Up to $977,000 in administration costs.⁶
Up to $10,000 as an incentive payment to the named plaintiff.⁵

None of the fund goes back to Trader Joe’s. If money remains after the first round of checks, a second distribution goes to class members who cashed their initial payment. If that isn’t feasible, any leftover funds will be donated to the Identity Theft Resource Center as a cy pres award.⁵⁶

What the Lawsuit Alleged

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, or FACTA, bars businesses from printing more than the last five digits of a customer’s card number on an electronically generated receipt, and also prohibits printing the expiration date. The rule exists to reduce the risk of identity theft from discarded receipts.¹

According to the complaint, a glitch in Trader Joe’s payment processing software caused some receipts to show ten digits, the first six and last four, instead of the permitted five. The named plaintiff, Brian Keim, noticed the issue in July 2019 after using a Visa debit card at a Trader Joe’s in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.¹ FACTA allows statutory damages of $100 to $1,000 per noncompliant receipt, which is why even a short window of violations can create meaningful class-wide exposure.⁵ Trader Joe’s has not admitted wrongdoing and agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.⁷

If your card purchase falls outside the March 5 to July 19, 2019 window, or if your receipt showed only the last four or five digits, you aren’t in the class, no matter how often you shopped at Trader Joe’s during that period.
