Trevino Brothers Case: Charges, Petition, and Sentences

The Treviño brothers case ended on October 6, 2025, when Christian Treviño pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to ten years in prison for the January 2022 beating death of his stepfather, Gabriel Quintanilla, while all charges against his older brother Alejandro Treviño were dismissed. A third defendant, family friend Juan Eduardo Melendez, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received ten years of probation. The killing followed an outcry from the brothers’ nine-year-old sister that Quintanilla, 42, had sexually abused her; at the time, he was already wanted on an active warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a child.¹

How Each Defendant’s Case Was Resolved

All three cases were resolved by plea agreements on the same day, nearly four years after the killing and before any trial began.

Christian Treviño, 17 at the time of the offense and charged as an adult under Texas law, pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault. He received a ten-year sentence with credit for 1,352 days already served in the Hidalgo County Jail.²

Alejandro Treviño, 18 at the time of the offense, had all charges against him dismissed. He had originally been charged with aggravated assault and engaging in organized criminal activity, not murder, because investigators attributed the fatal blows to the other two defendants.³

Melendez, 18 at the time, was originally indicted on capital murder and aggravated assault. He pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter, which the judge noted carries a Texas sentencing range of two to twenty years. He was the only defendant who received no prison time.⁴

Why the Brothers Received Different Outcomes

Hidalgo County District Attorney Toribio “Terry” Palacios said Christian received a prison sentence because he was the only defendant who used brass knuckles and the only one involved in all three of the assaults on Quintanilla.⁵

Palacios said the evidence in Alejandro’s case pointed to possible self-defense. His attorney, Stephen Barrera, told the court that Alejandro had stepped in only because Quintanilla was getting the better of Christian during the initial fight. “Alejandro sees Christian and Mr. Quintanilla fighting. Mr. Quintanilla is getting the better of Christian, he is smaller, so Alejandro stepped in to protect his brother,” Barrera said.²

What Happened on January 20, 2022

The events began at an RV park in Pharr, Texas, when the brothers’ nine-year-old sister told family members that Quintanilla, her father, had touched her inappropriately.³ After the outcry, Christian and Alejandro confronted Quintanilla at their residence. A fight broke out and Quintanilla fled on foot.

Police described three separate assaults over a short period. Christian chased Quintanilla to a nearby apartment complex, where Alejandro and Melendez arrived in a red Dodge Charger and joined the attack. The group then switched to a white Ford F-150 pickup, found Quintanilla walking along a road, and severely beat him. Investigators believe brass knuckles were used in at least one of the assaults.⁶

After the final beating, the three placed Quintanilla in the bed of the pickup and drove him to an open field near McColl and Whalen Road in McAllen, where they left him. A farmer discovered the body that afternoon and called police. Quintanilla had suffered severe blunt force trauma to the head, and authorities said he may have still been alive when he was abandoned. A police affidavit said the group later returned to Melendez’s home and burned the clothing they had worn during the attacks.¹

Quintanilla’s Outstanding Warrant

Quintanilla was already a fugitive at the time of his death. According to Pharr Police Chief Andy Harvey, he had been accused of sexually abusing a different minor between 2014 and 2016, entered into a national law enforcement database in 2019, and had been evading authorities since. Detectives searched for him at his last known address and his mother’s residence on multiple occasions without success. The warrant for continuous sexual abuse of a child remained active and unserved when the brothers confronted him.⁷

Original Charges and Time in Custody

All three suspects were arrested in January 2022 and arraigned on January 23. Christian was charged with capital murder, aggravated assault, and engaging in organized criminal activity, with bond set at $1.5 million. Melendez faced the same charges plus possession of marijuana, with bond of roughly $1.5 million. Alejandro was charged with aggravated assault and engaging in organized criminal activity, with bond set at $1 million.³ Both brothers remained in the Hidalgo County Jail throughout the pretrial period. Court records showed that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer had been placed on both, as they were identified as Mexican nationals.⁸

The Petition and Public Reaction

The arrests drew widespread public sympathy. Carlos Eduardo Espina, a 23-year-old nonprofit director and activist, launched a Change.org petition addressed to Texas Governor Greg Abbott calling for the release of all three defendants and arguing that the teenagers should not spend their lives in prison “for protecting their sister.”⁹ The petition eventually collected more than 759,000 signatures, one of the platform’s most-signed campaigns.¹⁰ There is no public record of a response from the governor’s office.

What Happens to Christian Treviño After Prison

Because Christian is not a U.S. citizen, District Attorney Palacios said there is a “high” possibility he will be deported after serving his sentence. His defense attorney confirmed that an ICE detainer will require him to face deportation proceedings upon release.²
