If you paid for Amazon Prime, you may be owed up to $51 from the Amazon Prime FTC settlement, a $2.5 billion deal the Federal Trade Commission finalized with Amazon in September 2025 over allegations that the company tricked shoppers into subscriptions and made cancellation unreasonably hard. Of that total, $1.5 billion is set aside for refunds to roughly 35 million U.S. customers. Some payments went out automatically starting in November 2025. Others require a claim, with notices mailed and emailed beginning in January 2026.
Who Qualifies for a Refund
To be eligible, you have to meet three conditions.1FTC. Amazon Refunds You must be a U.S.-based Prime customer. You must have enrolled through one of the sign-up pages the FTC challenged, or attempted to cancel through Amazon’s online cancellation process, between June 23, 2019 and June 23, 2025. And you must have used only a limited number of Prime benefits after enrolling.
The challenged enrollment flows are Amazon’s universal Prime decision page, the shipping-option select page, the single-page checkout, and the Prime Video enrollment page. You do not have to figure out on your own which page you signed up through. Amazon runs the analysis and identifies who qualifies.
Automatic Refunds: November and December 2025
If you signed up through one of the challenged flows and used three or fewer Prime benefits afterward, your refund was sent automatically. Payments went out between November 12 and December 24, 2025, through PayPal or Venmo.2WBAL-TV. Claims Process: File by the Deadline in Your Notice
A second group of eligible customers has to file a claim to be paid. This group includes people who used more than three but fewer than ten Prime benefits, and people who tried and failed to cancel their membership.1FTC. Amazon Refunds
Amazon began sending claim notices by mail and email in January 2026.3AL.com. Amazon Is Sending Money to Millions of Prime Customers If you get one, you have 180 days from the date of the notice to submit your claim. File at the official settlement website, SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com. You can choose to receive payment by PayPal, Venmo, or mailed check. Payments for this group are expected in late 2026.
The maximum refund per person is $51, regardless of which track you fall into.
How to Spot a Refund Scam
Scammers are using the settlement to phish. The FTC has flagged text messages impersonating Amazon that claim a “routine quality inspection” turned up a problem with a recent order and offer a “full refund” through a link.2WBAL-TV. - The FTC will not contact you directly about the settlement.
- Legitimate communications come through SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com or from admin@SubscriptionMembershipSettlement.com.
- Ignore any call, text, or email asking for personal information or payment to release your refund.
What the Case Was About
The FTC sued Amazon on June 21, 2023, accusing it of violating the FTC Act and the Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act (ROSCA) through what the agency called “manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs.”5FTC. FTC Takes Action Against Amazon for Enrolling Consumers in Amazon Prime Without Consent and Sabotaging Their Attempts to Cancel According to the complaint, the option to check out without subscribing to Prime was often harder to find than the subscription button, and some buttons didn’t make clear that clicking them meant agreeing to a recurring charge.
The agency also alleged that Amazon complicated cancellation through an internal system employees called “Iliad.” Once a customer found the cancellation flow, they were routed through pages offering discounts, options to turn off auto-renewal, or prompts to abandon cancellation. On September 17, 2025, Judge John H. Chun of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington ruled on partial summary judgment that Amazon violated ROSCA’s disclosure-timing requirements by collecting billing information before disclosing Prime’s material terms, including its $139 annual cost and auto-renewal.7Courthouse News Service. The $1 billion civil penalty is the largest ever in a case involving an FTC rule violation. The $1.5 billion refund fund is the second-highest restitution award the FTC has secured.6FTC. FTC Secures Historic $2.5 Billion Settlement Against Amazon
What Changes for Current Prime Members
The settlement order requires Amazon to change how it sells and cancels Prime going forward.9FTC. Stipulated Final Order, FTC v. Amazon.com, Inc.
- Amazon must prominently display all material terms, including cost, charge frequency, auto-renewal policies, and cancellation procedures, before collecting your billing information.
- Sign-up pages must include a clear button to decline Prime. Manipulative labels like “No, I don’t want Free Shipping” are prohibited.
- You must be able to cancel through the same method you used to sign up, and the process cannot be “difficult, costly, or time-consuming.”
- An independent third-party supervisor, funded by Amazon, will monitor refund distribution.
- Amazon must file its first compliance report with the FTC in September 2026, with additional reporting obligations extending five years.
