The Tupac Shakur murder case has, after nearly three decades as one of America’s most notorious unsolved killings, moved into active prosecution. A Clark County, Nevada, grand jury indicted Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis in September 2023 on a charge of murder with use of a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement.1ABC News. The Night Shakur Was Shot
Shakur attended the Mike Tyson–Bruce Seldon fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. In the lobby afterward, Shakur, Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight, and members of their entourage attacked Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, a South Side Crips member. Casino security cameras recorded the beating, and it would become the motive prosecutors point to today.3Billboard. Tupac Shakur Murder Uncle Suspect Knows Killer
Hours later, Shakur was in the passenger seat of Knight’s black BMW on Las Vegas Boulevard when a white Cadillac pulled alongside near Flamingo Road. A gunman opened fire, striking Shakur multiple times.4ABC News. Who Was in the Cadillac
Investigators identified four men in the white Cadillac. Davis rode in the front passenger seat. His nephew Orlando Anderson and Deandrae “Big Dre” Smith were in the back, with Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown driving.5Rolling Stone. The murder weapon, a .40-caliber Glock, was recovered in a Compton backyard in 1998 and later matched to the Shakur shooting through ballistics testing in 2006. It was never turned over to Las Vegas investigators, and its current location is unknown.8New York Daily News. Gun Used in Tupacs Murder Was Found in Compton Backyard
How Davis Talked Himself Into a Case
What eventually cracked the case was Davis himself. Starting around 2018, he gave a series of public accounts describing his role in the shooting. He appeared in BET’s documentary series Death Row Chronicles, sat for a 2019 interview with DJ Vlad, and published a memoir titled Compton Street Legend.9iHeart. Keefe D Claims His Stories About 2Pacs Murder Were for Entertainment In those accounts, Davis placed himself in the Cadillac, described the approach to Shakur’s car at a stoplight, and cast himself as the organizer of the retaliation for the MGM Grand beating. On one podcast, he recalled seeing the news coverage afterward and thinking he had gotten away with it.10Fox 5 Las Vegas. Grand Jury Evidence Includes Interviews Duane Keefe Davis
Davis had also made statements to federal investigators in 2009 under a proffer agreement tied to a Los Angeles narcotics case, admitting his role in the Shakur shooting. He believed those statements were shielded by immunity.5Rolling Stone. Duane Davis Alleged Tupac Killer Confessions Motive Prosecutors would later argue that his public retellings went well beyond anything an immunity deal could cover.
On July 17, 2023, LVMPD SWAT officers searched Davis’s home in Henderson, Nevada, seizing computers, a cellphone, a hard drive, .40-caliber bullets, photographs from the 1990s, a magazine featuring Shakur, and a copy of his memoir.11CBS News. The Charge and What Prosecutors Have to Prove
Prosecutors do not allege Davis pulled the trigger. Their case rests on Nevada’s aiding and abetting statute: Davis, they argue, was the “shot caller” who organized the retaliatory attack, obtained the .40-caliber Glock, and directed his nephew and associates to carry out the shooting.5Rolling Stone. Duane Davis Alleged Tupac Killer Confessions Motive The indictment accuses him of “counseling, encouraging, hiring, commanding, inducing and/or otherwise procuring” the murder.
The evidence leans heavily on Davis’s own words. Prosecutors plan to introduce his memoir, his media interviews, and the 2009 proffer session, arguing that Davis forfeited any protection by voluntarily repeating and expanding on the account in public.10Fox 5 Las Vegas. What the Defense Is Arguing
Lead defense attorney Carl Arnold has attacked the case on several fronts. A motion to dismiss argued the 27-year delay in prosecution “irreversibly prejudiced” Davis and that the government failed to honor immunity agreements he reached years earlier.14KCRA. Duane Davis Tupac Shakur Charges Dismissal The defense also points to the absence of the murder weapon and the Cadillac, calling the physical evidence insufficient. Arnold has claimed Davis was not in Las Vegas the night of the shooting and has floated an alternative theory implicating Reggie Wright Jr. and his security team.15ABC News. On the confessions themselves, Davis’s lawyers have characterized his accounts as embellished stories “produced for a financial benefit” and made “for entertainment purposes.”9iHeart. Keefe D Claims His Stories About 2Pacs Murder Were for Entertainment
On January 21, 2025, Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny denied the motion to dismiss. She ruled that Davis “provided no proof of any immunity deals,” that Nevada had never offered him one, and that there was no evidence the prosecution delay was intentional.16Fox 5 New York. Tupac Murder Suspect Keffe D A key pretrial fight now centers on the defense’s motion to exclude Davis’s police interviews and memoir, which prosecutors say are essential to proving he was the shot caller.
Custody, Bail, and Trial Timing
Davis has been held at the Clark County Detention Center since his arrest. Judge Kierny initially set bail at $750,000 with an option for house arrest and electronic monitoring.17ABC News. Prosecutors also filed a 180-page motion opposing bail that cited jailhouse recordings in which Davis and his son allegedly discussed a “green light” on witnesses named in discovery. Prosecutors defined the term as an authorization to kill, and federal authorities reportedly relocated at least one witness.19Good Morning America. DA Tupac Murder Suspect Plotting Harm Witnesses

The Sean Combs Allegations
Davis has long claimed that Sean “Diddy” Combs offered a $1 million bounty for the deaths of Shakur and Suge Knight, describing a meeting at Greenblatt’s Deli in Los Angeles where Combs allegedly said he had “a couple of problems” that needed to be “handled.”21The Spokesman-Review. Combs has denied the allegations, calling them “pure fiction and completely ridiculous” in 2011, and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson has confirmed he has never been a suspect in the case. No charges have been filed against Combs in connection with Shakur’s murder.
The Family’s Wrongful Death Lawsuit
