Tupac’s Quad Studios Shooting: Isaac’s Confession and Combs’s Denial

The Tupac Quad Studios shooting happened on the night of November 30, 1994, when Tupac Shakur was ambushed in the lobby of Quad Recording Studios at 723 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan and shot five times during a robbery. No one has ever been charged for the attack, but a consistent account has emerged over three decades pointing to hip-hop manager James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond as the person who ordered it, with convicted murderer Dexter Isaac and Walter “King Tut” Johnson named as among the gunmen.

What Happened in the Lobby

Shakur was in New York that fall for two reasons at once: he was recording, and he was standing trial on sexual abuse charges. On November 30, he was called to Quad to lay down a guest verse. According to journalist Touré, the session had been arranged through Rosemond, who managed rapper Little Shawn and allegedly lured Shakur in with the promise of a $7,000 feature payment.1Complex. As Shakur approached the building, he heard voices calling down from several floors above. They belonged to Lil Cease and other members of Junior Mafia, affiliates of The Notorious B.I.G. Lil Cease came downstairs to greet him in the lobby. Moments later, three armed men confronted Shakur and demanded his jewelry. According to an account Shakur later gave to fellow rapper Spice 1, he grabbed for one of the assailants’ guns. A struggle followed, and the men opened fire.3Fox 5 NY. Surgery, and a Wheelchair in Court the Next Day

Shakur was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center and underwent surgery for the five gunshot wounds. Hours after surgery, against medical advice, he checked himself out, according to hospital administrator Larry Dugan.4Los Angeles Times. The jury in his sexual assault trial had started deliberating the day before the shooting. Sequestered, they didn’t know about the attack when they reached a verdict. On December 1, the day after being shot, Shakur appeared in court in a wheelchair with a knit hat covering his bandages. He was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse and acquitted of sodomy and weapons charges, and later sentenced to eighteen months to four and a half years in prison.6Encyclopedia.com. Who Ordered the Attack

No one was ever charged for the Quad shooting. The New York statute of limitations expired more than a decade before key figures began talking publicly, which is why nothing has moved in court even as names have surfaced.7The Hollywood Reporter. Tupac Shakur Shooting: James Rosemond Report The account that has held up through confessions, reporting, and Shakur’s own statements centers on Rosemond as the orchestrator.

Dexter Isaac’s Confession

In June 2011, Dexter Isaac, a convicted murderer serving federal time, released a letter through AllHipHop claiming he was one of the gunmen. Isaac said Rosemond hired him to rob Shakur, paying him $2,500 plus all the stolen jewelry except the larger of the two diamond rings, which Rosemond wanted reset for his girlfriend, Cynthia Ried.8The Guardian. In a 2018 prison interview, Isaac added another layer. He alleged that Randy “Stretch” Walker, a rapper who was Shakur’s friend and collaborator, had “set the whole thing up” by giving the gunmen a play-by-play of Shakur’s movements, and that Rosemond promised Stretch a quarter brick of cocaine and $2,500.11XXL. Isaac is a Trinidadian citizen serving a life sentence in federal prison for the 1997 murder-for-hire of Waleed Hammouda, along with robbery, witness tampering, and obstruction charges. He was convicted in November 1999 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. A second motion for compassionate release, filed in December 2024, was denied; the court cited the seriousness of his crimes and his history of witness intimidation.13CaseMine. United States v. James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond

Rosemond denied involvement in the Quad shooting, calling his accusers “scurrilous informants.”8The Guardian. Tupac Shakur Shooting Confession According to the Hollywood Reporter, he reportedly admitted his role during proffer sessions with authorities. No charges could be brought because the statute of limitations had long expired.7The Hollywood Reporter. Walter “King Tut” Johnson

Walter “King Tut” Johnson has long been identified as one of the gunmen who confronted Shakur in the lobby. Shakur himself implicated Johnson before his death in 1996.17Yahoo Entertainment. Walter King Tut Johnson Released From Prison Johnson was never charged for the Quad shooting, but in 1997 he was convicted in the Eastern District of New York on seven federal counts, including robbery, witness tampering, and cocaine distribution, drawing five mandatory life sentences under the federal three-strikes law.18CBS News. Walter Johnson King Tut Released From Prison In October 2024, after 27 years in prison, Johnson was released. Judge Frederic Block, the same judge who had imposed the original sentence, granted compassionate release under the First Step Act, saying he had come to view the mandatory life sentences as “too harsh” and citing “ill-considered laws” and his own “inexperience” at the time of sentencing.19The New York Times. Life Sentence for Walter Johnson Reversed One of Johnson’s robbery victims submitted a letter supporting the motion; the Justice Department opposed the release.

Jacques “Haitian Jack” Agnant

Jacques “Haitian Jack” Agnant, a Brooklyn street figure who had befriended Shakur in 1993, sits at the edge of the story. Both men were arrested in the November 1993 sexual assault case at the Parker Meridien Hotel; Shakur was convicted and imprisoned, while Agnant pleaded to a misdemeanor and avoided prison.20Los Angeles Times. Tupac Quad Studios Shooting Report Shakur came to believe Agnant was a government informant who had helped set him up, saying so in the song “Against All Odds” and calling Agnant a “snitch” who was “workin’ for the feds.” Agnant has denied any role in the Quad shooting, said he told his associates not to touch Shakur, and challenged anyone with evidence of his informant status to produce it.21Andscape. Tupac’s Accusations Against Biggie and Puffy

When Shakur came out of surgery, one fact fixed in his mind: The Notorious B.I.G. and Sean “Puffy” Combs had been inside Quad the entire time. Multiple artists and producers were working in the building that night, but Shakur found it impossible to believe Biggie and Puffy did not know what was coming. He publicly accused them of advance knowledge; both denied any involvement or foreknowledge and continued to deny it for the rest of their lives.3Fox 5 NY. Quad Studios Shooting: Tupac Shakur Attack in Manhattan

Several people close to the situation have pushed back on Shakur’s theory. Rapper Treach, who was at the studio that night, said Biggie was not a “street” person and was in no position to orchestrate a robbery: “Did Biggie set Pac up? I’ma say hell-f*ckin’ no.”22Ambrosia for Heads. Tupac Biggie Quad Shooting: Treach Speaks Little Shawn characterized later claims of Biggie’s or Puffy’s involvement as a narrative built by Suge Knight to fuel East Coast–West Coast tensions after Shakur’s release from prison.2Ambrosia for Heads. Shakur’s suspicions hardened anyway. From prison, he signed with Suge Knight’s Death Row Records, creating a West Coast alliance explicitly positioned against Combs’s Bad Boy. Biggie released “Who Shot Ya?”, which Shakur interpreted as a taunt about the Quad shooting; Biggie said it had nothing to do with him. Shakur answered with “Hit ‘Em Up,” attacking Biggie, Bad Boy, and Faith Evans by name.24KCRA. The 2025 Netflix Documentary and Combs’s Denial

The Quad shooting returned to public debate in December 2025 with the Netflix docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning, produced by 50 Cent. The series implies Combs hired the robbers and alleges he announced a million-dollar bounty for the killing of Shakur and Suge Knight. It features a statement from Bad Boy co-founder Kirk Burrowes, who says he believes Combs “had a lot to do with the death of Tupac.”25Complex. Diddy Documentary: Sean Combs The Reckoning Netflix Review

Journalist Touré publicly pushed back, arguing the evidence points to Jimmy Henchman as the orchestrator, not Combs, and that the presence of Combs and Biggie in the building did not amount to involvement given how many artists and producers were working at Quad that night.1Complex. Touré Pushes Back on 50 Cent’s Diddy Doc Over 2Pac Quad Studios Shooting Combs denied any involvement: “It is beyond ridiculous and is completely false. Neither Biggie nor I had any knowledge of any attack before, during or after it happened.” He has reportedly been preparing a defamation lawsuit against Netflix over the series.25Complex. More than thirty years on, the Quad Studios lobby remains the inflection point of a feud that reshaped hip-hop. The gunmen have been named. The man most accounts identify as the orchestrator is serving life on unrelated federal convictions. And the case itself is closed by the clock, not by a verdict.
